I am American (originally from Pensacola, Florida) and have lived in Dakar, Senegal, West Africa for 14+ years. I moved here in 1999 w/3 American children because of the calm and tranquil environment and EXCELLENT education system. I have owned various businesses here, most recently tourism related.
I recently acquired a large property across from my B&B (google 'SenegalStyle') and as the kids are gone and I have a background in running language programs, I decided to make it a youth hostel and all inclusive language program for French, Arabic and Wolof (West African Studies) students. The language program is cheaper ($1250 a month) than a college course, 5x a week, 2hrs a day with 2+ hours of homework and includes books, a certified professional teacher (not a tutor or college student off the street) and room accommodation. With meals the cost is $1550 a month.
Dakar is a bit expensive for budget travelers and as it's an Francophone country, it's almost impossible to find economy priced homestays or hostels online in English. Well, SenegalStyle is EVERYWHERE and our background and reviews are easily accessible and online for anyone to see. Our rates are $20-24 a night per person, dorm style rooms w/internet, (5 large rooms, 6 bathrooms, kitchen, 2 balconies, a terrace and a large garden area downstairs along with a small African hut on the roof for relaxing, or exercise).
Here is a link to our TripAdvisor.com reviews and website for more information. It's a good idea and with the expense of college level courses in the US (and other places), this is a viable alternative that will give students a leg up when they return to University.
