Additional information
Positive aspects of school
I liked the classes generally. I felt the teaching was very good though unfortunately most of our time at Carel was not spent learning French.
Negative aspects
I did not like the activities, which I felt spent much too much time doing nothing. Further, French was not spoken during them to the extent that it was difficult if one did not speak much English or Spanish.
Other comments
If you are not coming with a group, afternoon activities may be considerably less enjoyable.
City/place
It is a nice beach town.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
Not too much.
Negative aspects
I felt that I needed to be in an immersion class rather than doing a lot of grammar exercises. I know some grammar and I thought that by being in an immersion class I could learn more grammar. I had indicated that my issue with learning French was listening for comprehension. One of the 2 teachers that I had did not know English, so she spoke French, which was good. By the way, I only took 3 classes; the rest of the time I took private lessons as recommend by one of the teachers. Maybe that was a mistake. Also, I never used the audio lab, nor was it suggested to use it. There was no orientation prior to the first class on how or where to use the facilities.

The house was fine and clean. Although it was far they left you a bike but it was quite ramshackle. The woman was attentive and tried to offer everything she could, but after dinner (at 19:30, since she couldn't have dinner later) she fell asleep and it is a shame to go to a family and not being able to practice the language. Also, every day we receive phone calls at 6 in the morning, I think it is not hours if you have people. Finally, although the woman did everything good, I do not think she is old enough to continue welcoming people.

Insider tips about what future students should not miss
If you are paying your own fees negotiate with the school so your needs are met, otherwise you will join an existing class which may not work for you.
Other comments
The first week did not work for us as the students not paying their own fees did not seem to be committed to learning and it was very disruptive. Also I did not need experience in presenting a project - a waste of time for me.

Think twice before you decide to go there. Better to go with a companion.
Other comments
The school did not offer all levels and did not inform me that my level was not there. I was put in a lower level which obviously did not contribute to a significant progress in my French. I was completely left alone in my free time without any supervision from any adult even though I am only 14. My parents didn't like it, of course.

The mix of nationalities (on average about 80 students from 20 nations) and ages (approx. 21-60 years). A good value for money. The city of Royan is not comparable to places like Nice, Paris, Bordeaux, but there are many possibilities for activities, and during the week, it is easier to focus on the lessons than in the above mentioned places.

My accommodation in a host family was a bit grubby but my hostess was very friendly, helpful, and a good cook of the French cuisine! Also, she talked a lot with me, so I would absolutely recommend to stay with a host family. However, you should be prepared that the idea of cleanliness and order may be different than your own.

If you want to pass the DELF, you CAN do it in the school in one day, one day simulation test a week, a lot of parking, very good teachers ... I think for a Spaniard with a car, who wants to take the DELF it is the best value for the money in France (I've been to three different schools).

Make sure you're given a proper introduction to the school facilities - because only I and one other student began on the first day of my course we didn't receive a proper introduction and it took me a week to work out what facilities were available and how to access them.
Other comments
The school teaches in a very formal way - it isn't interactive and doesn't support those who are struggling. Each student is expected to take care of their own needs. I fell between two levels and was put in the higher class which I found difficult and demoralising.

The Erasmus accommodation was awful. It was filthy on my arrival. I had to go to the supermarket to buy cleaning products as the surfaces were black with dirt. The bed was really a matress on the floor. There was a disgusting smell coming from the fridge and mould growing around the shower curtain. I even wore flip flops in the shower. I tried to spend as little time as possible here.

Response from school
We have had an exceptionnal problem with some flats last summer which had been occupied for a previous period of 7 months and which have not been checked out in due time, thus leaving not enough time for thorough cleaning by the janitor. Please note that the mattress does lay on a low support and is not placed directly on the floor. Otherwise, flats in our residence are always cleant before arrival of students. A lot of our "back-comers" do ask for accomodation in the residence again.

Carel is a wonderful place to study a language, to meet nice people and to have party. Almost every evening there is very varied animation programm so you get to know the other students very soon. The students are from all over the world and it´s very interesting to meet all. But you should pay attention about the placement test. So don´t hesitate to change the course, no matter if you are told that it is not possible. I think the best place to stay is either with a family (if you get along) - very good for learning French - or in an appartement. The Erasmus house is ok but not very comfortable. Royan is quite small and in the summer very touristic, the beach is a bit crowded, but anyway it´s great to be at the sea and in the evening there are lots of concerts and other animation. You shouldn´t miss the nice French restaurants, even if they are expensive and a bit touristic.

Insider tips about what future students should not miss
I feel that it is absolutely necessary to spend some time with a guest family during your stay.
Other comments
I hear that Royan is quite a "dead" city in the winter months, but I arrived in Spring just before the summer boom. Therefore, slowly more students were attending the school CARAL and this resulted in increased activities. For any meaningful language progress, I feel that it is necessary to connect with a French family and to NOT cluster with people from your home country/language. I had an all-around amazing, but short (2-week) experience. This was, in part, due to luck since my guest family was quick amazing and lived directly next to the school. The region around Royan has much to offer and I wish that I could have stayed much longer.

Very international school, so be aware that this affects your classroom learning - various accents and levels of study contributes for an interesting learning environment. Furthermore the school is very well organized and available in your regards. Majority of students in the intensive summer course were university aged, and activities are geared more for this group age, but good interaction with everyone even if you are older and willing to be social. I highly recommend CAREL.

I was surprised how friendly and caring everyone was. It was also really great to see that not all French people are concentrating on the French language, but are open-minded for the ones that have problems with foreign languages. We all know that France is a little bit selfish considering this fact.
Other comments
can't speak for everyone, but I just loved my teacher, because she always had a great bond with the whole class and that motivates a lot. I haven't regret this course for one single hour.
