Student opinions about CAREL, Royan

Liked
Experienced teachers, mediateques (you can see french movies with sub titles, there are many work books or audio text which you can use free of charge). In this school you can have a contact not only with foreign students who learn French but also French students who learn English, Spanish and German. It's something very unique of this school. You have many chance to speak in French with ordinary French people. (not only teachers or somebody who works in the shops)
Disliked
internet acces is very expensive (4 euros / h)
Insider tips about what future students should not miss Royan is a very small town, so it's a bit boring town but for those who want to improve his capacity of French, it's one of the best locations. You must not miss the party at Pub Astoria on the first Tuesday.

Other comments In the beginning, I chose 4 weeks. But I found this school being so good that I extended my cours. There was another Spanish girl who did the same extention. Information for Japanese student: There were not many Japanese student in this school when I was here. (Only 4 students) If you look for a school where there are not too many japanese students, it might be a very good choice. There is a chance to introduce our culture to other students, so it is very nice idea to bring something (photobook, food) to show.

I especially liked the activities outside class. For example, I went to the welcome reception for new students in the nearby Irish Pub "Astoria" and was able to quickly establish contact with French people. For me it was important to practice French. The school also offers English courses for French .There you can find also very easy language partner

The mix of nationalities (on average about 80 students from 20 nations) and ages (approx. 21-60 years). A good value for money. The city of Royan is not comparable to places like Nice, Paris, Bordeaux, but there are many possibilities for activities, and during the week, it is easier to focus on the lessons than in the above mentioned places.

Other comments My accommodation in a host family was a bit grubby but my hostess was very friendly, helpful, and a good cook of the French cuisine! Also, she talked a lot with me, so I would absolutely recommend to stay with a host family. However, you should be prepared that the idea of cleanliness and order may be different than your own.

Cheap, residence in front of the school, studio TV used by the students (it's really funny!), beaches, classes with projector... Very very, professional... someone told me that it was one of the two best language schools in France, I really think it.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss If you want to pass the DELF, you CAN do it in the school in one day, one day simulation test a week, a lot of parking, very good teachers ... I think for a Spaniard with a car, who wants to take the DELF it is the best value for the money in France (I've been to three different schools).

Other comments I hear that Royan is quite a "dead" city in the winter months, but I arrived in Spring just before the summer boom. Therefore, slowly more students were attending the school CARAL and this resulted in increased activities. For any meaningful language progress, I feel that it is necessary to connect with a French family and to NOT cluster with people from your home country/language. I had an all-around amazing, but short (2-week) experience. This was, in part, due to luck since my guest family was quick amazing and lived directly next to the school. The region around Royan has much to offer and I wish that I could have stayed much longer.
