The language school Dar Loughat - Cross-Cultural Language Center was founded in Tetouan, Morocco in 2004. Dar Loughat is ideally located in the center of downtown Tetouan, declared a World Cultural Heritage City by UNESCO. The city of Tetouan is less than an hour by ferry from the Spanish coast and boasts a mild Mediterranean climate. The small size of the city allows students to easily become integrated and immersed into the local culture, which is famous for its legendary generosity and tolerance. The school is located in Place Moulay Mehdi, 93000 Tetouan (Morocco).

Modern Standard Arabic Course

Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is the language used throughout the Arab world for specialized functions, including classroom instruction, the electronic and printed media, and formal situations. Our MSA program is tailored to meet the needs and aims of all students interested in learning or improving Standard Arabic. It provides them with the necessary knowledge and training needed to acquire full and clear understanding of the Arabic language system. It consists of three levels; each level is divided into three successive and progressive sub levels. * For classes with fewer than three students, hours will be reduced proportionately. Hours of instruction in group courses with only one or two students will be reduced by 50% and 25% respectively.

Colloquial Moroccan Arabic Course

Colloquial Moroccan Arabic (CMA) or “darija” is the most widely spoken dialect in Morocco. While most CMA words find their root in MSA, some words are borrowed from Spanish, French and Berber. Depending on the students’ interest, CMA may be taught with recourse to Arabic or Latin script, though the former is highly recommended to make life easier with daily tasks in the markets, shops and getting around. It consists of three levels of studies. ***We have tailored our materials to serve the functional aspects of the dialect in day-to-day interactions with Moroccans rather than the structural aspects of it. * For classes with fewer than three students, hours will be reduced proportionately. Spoken Arabic Course

Students wishing to learn a more “relaxed” and communicative standard Arabic, could take, in addition to MSA group classes, individual lessons of Spoken Arabic. Spoken Arabic could be used by any literate Arabic native speaker, who cares about using the right language structure but maintains her/his local dialect characteristics. In this program, the system of levels is structured according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. ***The textbook used for Spoken Arabic lessons, An-nafura, allows students to practice the standard language they learn in MSA classes, to use it for communication in daily life situations and to get used to listening and understanding the different Arab dialects and accents.

Specialized Courses

The school offers a wide range of specialized courses with a focus on a variety of themes such as An Introduction to Islam, Moroccan History, Sufism in Morocco, Andalusian History, etc. These courses are offered on a one-to-one basis according to the students’ interest and request. Students at this program may choose the language of instruction between Arabic, English, Spanish and French.

Comments about courses:	The school closes only during two major religious holidays, which are Eid Al-Fitr (2 days following the end of the holy month of Ramadan) and Eid Al-Ad´haa (the feast of Sacrifice). They both depend on the lunar calendar. All the classes missed during these days will be made up.
