Student opinions about Dilit International House, Rome

Liked
I loved the international environment of the school. It was full of students from all over the world, and once in a higher level, italian was the language of communication between the students as well (rather than english, which was great for learning). There are also possibilities to meet Italians who are learning English in the school, so some free practice! The teachers were absolutely awesome, all well trained and very entertaining. One negative thing might be that the curiculum is rather repetitive, so be prepared for some boredom if you go to classes for more than 2 months. However, the standard of teaching is outstanding, and would definitely recommend this school to everyone!!

The teachers are amazing. Very nice, patient and funny. I had 4 teachers (group classes and individual ones) that were very good. The group lesson are a little bit repetitive (listening, acting, practising) but they are good and it is amazing to share the class with so many different cultures (German, Spanish, Korean, Turkish, French, Swedish, Mexican, English...). I spent a very good time with the students outside the school. The individual lessons are very good because you progress faster than during the group ones. Combined classes are ideal to progress.

I found a very pleasant atmosphere there. After one day I understood that you are there to learn. No stress. If you are having a hard time, no problem, you are here and take it easy. I was also at a good level. Not too difficult, but not too easy either. I am very satisfied and will try, once Dirk and Hilde's situation has been cleared up and they can come along, to come back to Dilit with them for a week in October/November 2024!

I had one week of private lessons and I really liked that I had 2 different teachers during that week. Every evening the school organized different programmes like guided tours to a special part of Rome which you don't find in the usual guide books, or film evening, or literature lessons for free and the weekend they organize trips to places in the area surrounding Rome (this costs little money and are well organized).
Insider tips about what future students should not miss In the school there is a nice little bar where one can have coffee (€0,70) etc and even for lunch they offer 3 different simple meals... I mention this, because the host families also offer breakfast - but as they don't have the same breakfast "mentality" as we have for €3,5 they often only offer coffee and biscuits so one could save money by eating at the school!

I liked the fact that there were people from all over the globe and that the method of teaching was almost informal because it allowed me to make significant progress in the learning process. The teacher I had was very dynamic and energetic, which made lessons easier. The rest of the staff was always very helpful. I loved the lunch area because I could eat there a good meal for a cheap price.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss If you are the type of person that learns from a very structured- by the book method, you might get a bit frustrated by the program at Dilit. But if you are one of those who is willling to go with the flow and challenge yourself, I definitely recommend Dilit. Also, wonder about the school activities; the ones I went to were great; unfortunately, they get cancelled if there are not many people, so if you don't want to miss out, ADVERTISE them on school with everyone you see! It worked for us:)

Participating in an advanced-level-course, I found it particularly helpful that emphasis was put on making the students speak among themselves - rather than only with the teacher. Moreover, the staff at the school were extremely helpful and friendly. A friend of mine lost his purse and the school willingly lent him some money.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss I took a homecooking class, which was fairly expensive (80 € for three hours), but good value nevertheless: the cooking was good, we had some wine and it was an excellent opportunity to practise one's Italian.

Parlare, parlare, parlare. Finally, a course that isn't a course. A lot of speaking changes the way you use the language. Be sure to take part in the afternoon activities and aperitivo. Everyone at the school is really friendly, whether it's the teachers, the secretary, the director or the club.

The speakers for the listening texts are sometimes not of the best quality. The teaching part with repeating texts is strange, but it is only a small part.

Super nice, enthusiastic teachers, many young students (but there is also a great community of older ones!!), varied lessons where you talk a lot and have fun. Well air-conditioned, nice afternoon activities, good flats and a great location very close to Termini. I enjoyed my time extremely!
Disliked
In all the audios/videos only men were mentioned in my case! Not really bad, but I would have liked a more balanced gender ratio:) My flat was not so well connected and my flatmates were unfortunately quite dirty, but the neighbourhood was really nice!

The atmosphere in the school is very pleasant and you feel right at home. The teachers, secretaries and cafeteria staff are super helpful and friendly. The leisure activities were especially great, very varied and you saw/learned a lot. It's also easy to make contacts quickly.

I liked the focus on conversation and the training of the four basic skills. However, the school's didactics and methodology are sometimes quite rigid and not very flexible. Doesn't suit every type of learner.

Good teachers with pleasant teaching style, in which you are maximally encouraged to speak the new language yourself. The school is located in a nice building with ample outdoor space with terraces. The 50 plus programme is great fun
Disliked
How inconvenient that it is not communicated in advance which days there are activities. As a result, it is impossible to pre-book visits that require early booking (e.g. Vatican Museum).
Insider tips about what future students should not miss The school itself has a programme (not 50+) which is interesting. Sundays are always free of activities, but if possible, try to do popular sightseeing Monday to Thursday, as it is obviously quieter in Rome then.

Questions and answers about Dilit International House

  • I’m happy to inform you that we can organise the group and individual lessons for your clients, mother and daughter both in the morning.

The mother could join the general Italian classes 20 lessons per week from 9.00 to 12.20 Monday to Friday and the daughter can choose how many individual lessons to attend.
Paola, Marketing Coordinator. from Dilit International House - Jan 20, 2020
  • Classes are normally held Monday through Friday, unless a bank holiday falls on a weekday. The school is closed on bank holidays and weekends. The group lessons are cancelled without replacement on a bank holiday.

Adriana Piva, Booking Office from Dilit International House - Jan 04, 2023
  • Please note that the Rome for 50+ programme includes many activities where you will be walking. In particular: a half-day trip to sights around Rome, a half-day trip to the Castelli Romani area including a visit to a wine cellar, wine tasting and dinner and 2 guided tours of Rome. All these activities are on foot, so they should be aware of this, as all or some of them may not be suitable.
As the course is a package, they may also consider booking a 2-week intensive group course of 20 lessons/week (as this is also part of the Rome for 50+ programme) and booking the cultural activities separately. For some of the activities, these only need to be booked upon arrival in Rome.
Adriana Piva, Booking Office from Dilit International House - Jan 04, 2023
  • The course is preferably addressed to students with a full A2 level, who could enjoy more and have more benefits from the course, which, as mentioned, includes cultural activities, all in Italian.
However, it wouldn’t be a problem if your wife doesn’t have the level. The language component is anyway in a group course of students of different age, but according to level, so she would be anyway placed in a group of her level.
Maybe for the cultural part, you may need to help her a bit, translating.
Adriana Piva, Booking Office from Dilit International House - Jan 04, 2023
  • Dinner is always a warm dish, unless it’s summer and a cold dish could be preferable
Adriana Piva, Booking Office from Dilit International House - Jan 11, 2023
  • When filling out the application form, you can specify your preferences about the host family. The school will then confirm if your request can be accommodated or suggest an alternative option.
