The riverside Ribeira district is the most alluring part of Porto, a window onto the past with shadowed lanes, dark, cobbled passages and boats lined up along the quayside (now mostly for show, advertising for tourist jaunts).

Jardins do Palácio de Cristal:
This modest, leafy park named after a long-gone 19th-century crystal palace, is home to a sports pavilion, gardens and a pond, roving peacocks and a reasonably priced self-service restaurant. But pride of the place goes to the new, high-tech Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett.

* Solar do Vinho do Porto:
The finest place in Porto to drink Port is the Solar do Vinho do Porto, a posh bar with a river view terrace beside the Palácio de Cristal garden, where you'll find hundreds of varieties to choose from.

Student opinions about Fast Forward Institute, Porto

Liked
The staff were so friendly and helpful, and willing to do whatever they could to help me improve my language. My teachers were Clóvis and Mafalda, and I really enjoyed learning from them. I especially recommend taking individual classes alongside the group classes, as you can ask directly about any doubts you have. During my individual lessons, Mafalda made everything very clear and easy to follow, even things that I had been really confused about in the past.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss Participate in the organised trips and activities (that include Ribeira, the river, Praça de aliados and the Torre dos Clérigos). The centre of Porto is small enough that you can see a lot in a week and it is really beautiful.

Very, very friendly teachers. The school is relatively small and very cozy, which makes you feel like in a family :) The quality of teaching is high, and adjusted to students individual needs. I strongly recommend this school to everyone who would like to learn wonderful Portuguese language, and spend time in a social, friendly, entertaining manner.

Teachers are very friendly and accommodating, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. School location is super convenient. Everyone is supportive and encouraging to learn the language and afternoon activities cover all landmarks and interesting places to visit. There is a real sense of camaraderie across groups and teachers.
Disliked
Teachers change on a weekly basis so if you choose longer course, it’s very likely you will be taught by different teachers. School has a policy of rotating teachers from one week to another. Teaching style is quite old school, with book and whiteboard only, no multimedia or listening exercises.

The Fast Forward school is really fantastic! It is located in a very central position of the city, near the metro station. The course was really well organized and my teacher was exceptional, both in explanations and in accompanying us in the afternoon activities.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss At the time of the communication of the accommodation, the student must be informed about the system of public transport, especially and it is located in a non-central area; the system of the Oporto areas could be a bit complicated, especially for young and/or inexperienced students.

Go and meet the local people, who are very welcoming and open-minded. For me, it was also a great experience to share these two weeks with this family, with who I kept in touch up to now.

The learning groups are small, so you are constantly challenged. The contact with the teachers was very good.

The lessons are based almost exclusively on the textbook, which is certainly very good. But I would have liked a little more flexibility in the way the exercises are worked through.
