Student opinions about Scuola Leonardo da Vinci, Rome

Liked
Excellent situation in a historic building in a lovely old pedestrianised area not far from Piazza Navona and the Tiber, yet just a minute from a major bus route. Excellent historical/archeological walks led by a specialist tutor every Wednesday, and talks on history/geography/writers on other afternoons. These activities appealed most to the more mature adult students and were of a high standard.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss I'd highly recommend the late afternoon talk/visits, even though if you have morning classes it may seem inconvenient to return for them at 5.30pm (one advantage of afternoon classes is that they finish at 5.15, just in time for the extra events.)

Other comments I was initially placed in an afternoon class but it was easy to change to a morning for my 2nd week. The school has created its own textbooks which centre on Rome & provide a lot of interesting information on Roman legends, history etc while teaching grammar in an entertaining way. I would have preferred each session to be split between 2 teachers as happens in some other language schools, since if you had a boring teacher who just plugged the same thing mindlessly for 3 hours, there wasn't much you could do about it. Students voted with their feet: after the 2nd afternoon was excruciatingly boring, the class dropped from 10 to 5 for the rest of the week. Obviously there is an element of luck in your teacher allocation - my 2nd one was enthusiastic and never boring. Classrooms were rather bare and just had hard chairs, no posters, though some did have prints of Italy on the walls. No social space, just a coffee machine in the corridor. Good WiFi, and a caretaker kept the place spotlessly clean. A plus point: lunchtime revision classes were offered at each level to make up for classes lost when the school was closed on a public holiday.

The school is well organised, the teaching material and the teachers are great. There are regular activities and excursions in the evenings or fortnightly at the weekend, where you can make lots of contacts. The language students come from all over the world. I really liked the school's central location and the building it is in.
Disliked
The chairs are a bit uncomfortable.

Combination of language education and cultural program (Dolce Vita). Teachers were motivated and played well into the level of the class. Most of the guides who accompanied us to the events in the D.V. program were excellent, especially Monika who deserves credit for her role.

Other comments The school is too lenient on people who are late in class and (even) eat/drink in class. A much more stricter policy on those issues should be implemented (distracts from class). And cutting the line at the coffee machine (why is there only one?) is unacceptable (even when one is from France). On occasion, somebody from the office broke into class and did a roll-call. In my view, bizzare (what is the purpose?) and a significant distraction. It interrupts class and the teacher and students need time afterwards to get back into the subject. Communication on aspects of the Dolce Vita program can be better. No notification was given beforehand that we would require to buy bus tickets (not all transportation was included) and when we went to Viterbo and made an artifact, we were not informed when these would arrive at school. Only after we asked questions ourselves, did we get answers (but never from the office...). And they did arrive, but only on the last day (just in time, yes).

I didn't like the fact that the school didn't respond to the students' wishes at all - I realise that this isn't always possible - always under the premise of keeping the level in a class at the same level. The reality was a little different.

Classrooms are small for the numbers in the class and depending on your seat you could not always get a good view of the board. Teacher spoke rather too quickly for A2. No study space i.e. a library or study room for students. Days were too short. After school activities were not possible if you had a 12:00 class or had to be back in your accommodation in the evenings. Text book did not have answers in the back so you could not check your progress.

Quality of teaching / language progress: Was expecting a bit more from the course ie slides, lectures. In reality it was just photocopies from a text book about specific aspects. A nice teacher but she did not speak very clearly. The classroom was in the cellar and was very musty.
Other comments I’m not sure it has been very well thought out about fitting in students who are only there for a short period. The school badly needs a room where students can study especially as the teaching day is so short.

The location was excellent and it was good to meet other people on the course. By the 3rd lesson I felt as i was making progress.
Disliked
The first day was chaotic with students moving in and out of the class and it would have helped to have had the book in advance. The classroom was small and noisy ( noise from outside). A greater range of teaching activities would have been good.
