Spanish and a Passion for Small Museums
Barrio de las Letras
Bookings should be made at least 1 month in advance.Madrid is much more than the “Golden Triangle of Art”. Apart from the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofia Museum and the Thyssen Museum, the city hides other little museums containing cultural treasures inside their walls which will delight you.
For example, the Sorolla Museum originated after the widow of the painter Joaquín Sorolla, Clotilde García del Castillo, willed her husband’s paintings to the Spanish state in order for them to on exhibit in a museum in his memory; to guarantee continuous access to his work in the future. The museum is located in the palace, which was his last home and studio, which makes the visit even more personal, and close to Sorolla.
The Lazaro Galdiano Museum is just as spectacular as the Sorolla; it has a wide and heterogeneous collection of the editor José Lázaro Galdiano inside its walls, which has been developed with an encyclopedic interest towards all the arts and related techniques. After his death, he donated it to the Spanish state together with his Spanish residency, which was the headquarters of his publishing house La España Moderna, along with a library of 20,000 volumes for the education and delight of future generations.
The Museum of Romanticism is located in a palace which recreates the daily life and costumes of the Bourgeoisie of the Romantic period, allowing us to discover how the society functioned in that historical period and also the main Spanish protagonists of this cultural movement. The museum originated from a donation of the paintings to the state, apart from pieces of furniture and personal effects of the II Marqués de la Vega-Inclán. More donations and deposits were added to the collection by personalities of the time.
If you want to enroll in the ‘Spanish and a Passion for the “Little Museums” Course’ you need to be at least 18 years of age. The course includes a package combining 20 lessons in Spanish per week (4 lessons a day of 45 minutes each) plus two visits to these little museums in Madrid – Sorolla Museum, Museum of Romanticism, Lazaro Galdiano, ...

Spanish and a Passion for Cool Madrid Neighbourhoods
Barrio de las Letras
The neighborhoods of Madrid represent the essence of life in this vibrant city. Some of them, such as Lavapiés, are more than 500 hundred years old and since their origin, many different cultures and nationalities have lived here together. Others, such as Malasaña or La Latina are full of bars and terraces where you can have "cañas" (beer) and tapas any day and time of the week, and also nightclubs and pubs where you can dance till the sun comes up.
In Madrid, you will find a cheerful, special and unique street life where everyone is welcome. You can’t find many cities in the world that stay alive 24 hours a day year-round, or that change dramatically just by turning a corner.
Simply by crossing the Paseo de Recoletos, you go from the luxurious neighborhood of Salamanca, an ideal shopping destination where you will find the best and most prestigious fashion brands in the world, to the the streets of Chueca. This is one of the most representative neighborhoods of the LGBT movement, and an example of diversity where LGBT Pride festivities are celebrated every summer.
Other neighborhoods are filled with tradition and history, such as the neighborhoods of the Austrias and the Letras, where time seems to have completely stopped. There you will find the Opera Square, the Royal Theatre of Madrid, the Plaza de Oriente, the Royal Palace, the Gardens of Sabatini and the Almudena Cathedral. Everyone who visits Madrid needs to see these places which say a lot about the people who lived and reigned in the past.
You will also be able to keep track of the greatest writers of the Spanish Golden Age such Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Luis de Góngora or Francisco de Quevedo, and of more modern writers such as Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and José Echegaray.
Madrid is a city with such infinite possibilities; still, there are many people from Madrid who still don’t know the city in depth. The "Spanish and a Passion for Madrid and its Neighborhoods" course makes it easier for you to discover the personality of many Madrid neighborhoods and their major tourist and historic highlights while learning Spanish.
With this course you will be able to learn Spanish while discovering the history and culture of Madrid. The course consists of 20 lessons per week, 4 45-minute Spanish lessons each morning, and cultural activities in the afternoon such as visiting the neighborhood of Chueca, the neighborhood of Salamanca, the Madrid of the Austrias and the Borbones and other interesting locales.
