Additional information
Positive aspects of school
- small groups - lively, practice-oriented, varied lessons - mixture of different ages and countries of origin - Afternoon activities that resulted in subsequent dinners with classmates
Other comments
Through the afternoon activities, which were always voluntary, you got to know other participants from the school (better) and could also meet up for the evening.
City/place
Lucca is a very beautiful medieval city, surrounded by a city wall, and from one "cast". There are many beautiful squares and alleys and something new to discover everywhere. A very pleasant city where I would have liked to stay longer.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Our teacher Elena taught with varied methods, so that the lessons were a lot of fun. The group allocations were well thought out so that the participants were well matched to each other.
Accommodation
Very nice hostess. As there were often visitors, it was sometimes very busy. Less suitable for people who mainly want peace and quiet.

Positive aspects of school
Location is ok
Negative aspects
Horrible experience. They had a class with people ranging from 6 months study of Italian to 14 years study. The teachers who were disinterested focused on the high level speakers and did nothing to accommodate the lower levels. One week there were a total of 12 students in the school. So 2 were put in low beginners class and the rest were just lumped together in the other class.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
Fun cheerful teachers. Small class. Fantastic location. Good pace.
Negative aspects
I'd have liked more activities and some of them in my native language (like tours of the city).
City/place
Lucca is a very special place. Like a dry Venice.
Accommodation
In Lucca, it would be good to warn people that having a breakfast isn't needed due to cafes in proximity to school. And having cooked dinners is useful and a good time to talk to host in Italian but it would be even better to have the option of say four dinner nights with host so that one could have three nights a week to have dinner out.

I really liked the lessons: methodologically varied (conversation, good animating questions, silent and spoken trailers, texts, etc.)

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
The teaching method in private classes is very well adjusted to my personal needs.
Negative aspects
I'm used to air-conditioned classes because of the heat. I have already discovered that in Lucca, and therefore in Koinè, it is not usual. We have had to settle for a fan.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Knowing how to take advantage of the course, going out and speaking continuously in Italian and watching TV to learn vocabulary and most common expressions.
Other comments
The methodology used... very practical. You live and feel Italian.
City/place
It is a small city that has everything, good public transport to travel to nearby cities and very quiet and safe. I am in love with its old town inside the walls. I have not felt like a tourist.
Quality of teaching / language progress
From the first day the teacher knew very well how to approach it according to my needs. He was very good, not boring at all and I think he has personally made me improve in the knowledge of the Italian language and its culture.

Positive aspects of school
Great location inside the city walls. Relaxed atmosphere.
Negative aspects
The class mix was a little variable in level but I wouldn't really criticise the school for this they have to work week to week with the different abilities of students who arrive.
City/place
It's a beautiful town, if you are looking for night clubs you're in the wrong place but there are numerous bars cafes and restaurants to enjoy. Lucca though was a great place to go learn Italian

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
In both weeks we had excellent teachers and very intensive lessons in a small group. The trips were also fun and very well organized. The location of the school in the old town of Lucca is unique.
Negative aspects
We were a bit surprised that we got a different teacher in our second week. In the end it didn't matter because it was also very good. Nevertheless, we would have liked better planning or prior information. The furnishings in the classrooms are very spartan. The chairs with tables that can be folded down are not very functional, as you don't even know what to do with your documents. It would also make sense that instead of the individual sheets you might get a folder with a register, possibly a writing pad and a pen.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Highly recommended: the "wine excursions" with teacher and sommelier Stefano.
City/place
We felt very comfortable. The old town is beautiful, with lots of great restaurants, bars and cafes. However, one should never forget to have insect repellent with you. In and around Lucca there is a lot of water and unfortunately a lot of mosquitos.

Koine is a great school in a beautiful hill town. I loved their emphasis on mastering spoken Italian and the class activities were interesting and varied. The teachers were great, the atmosphere relaxed and friendly. I have no reservations in recommending their short program. I was staying 3 months and because of relatively few long term students we were combined with the short program which inevitably led to repetition of classwork and excursions. Otherwise perfect and I would love to return.

Positive aspects of school
I liked Madalena's teaching style. I also liked how the school encouraged student interaction via the activities and the 11 a.m. breaks. Everyone got to know everyone else, even if you were in different classes.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Stay longer than one week and get to know the other students at the school!
City/place
I loved loved loved Lucca and will definitely be back!
Quality of teaching / language progress
I loved my experience at Koine. The arrangement fostered student interaction and I now have many new friends from my time there. There were several inexpensive excursions in the afternoon in which many students participated. The age levels and lengths of stay varied which also made it interesting.
Accommodation
I loved my location. It was a nice 20 minute walk through Lucca to school. I had a private room in an older apartment with a wonderful balcony/garden. My host were very kind and checked on things periodically. Since it was an older building, it was chilly but luckily I had warm pjs.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
The teachers are all competent and friendly, no matter how much I look, I just can't find anything to criticize ;-)
Other comments
It is best to book in the off-season, then the courses are nice and small and the city is not so crowded.
City/place
Wonderful little old town, ideal location - as a starting point for sightseeing (Pisa, Firenze, ...), hiking (Alpi Apuane), sea ...
Quality of teaching / language progress
Two hours of private tuition (2-4 p.m.) in the afternoon is ok, it only occasionally collides with the school's afternoon activities - but the missed lessons can be spread over the other days.
Accommodation
Very nice hosts, the room was a bit spartan, but ok - and with its own bathroom.

I thought it was great. I liked that the instructors didn't speak any English to me - not that I understood everything but was always able to at least garner the general sense of what was being conveyed. Total immersion is the best way to learn a foreign language.

I would have liked a bit more of the teachers correcting the group work. If someone is a bit behind, it's difficult to know if what you are doing is right or wrong. Also, I think it's important that everyone gets to class on time, it disrupts everyone and we have to start again because someone is late. Not fair and a waste of time.

Very good reception and classrooms in good condition. However, despite a previous interview, I found myself in a group where pedagogy was based exclusively on successive exchanges in mini-groups. This did not answer my needs in language, grammar, and vocabulary, because we spoke without being corrected, therefore without being able to progress. Interesting texts and videos but no verification of meaning by the teacher. For having followed a very constructive week in Bologna last year, this one was disappointing. Very good contact with LanguageCourse and Lola Morel.

Lucca is an amazing city. Don't miss any of the guided tours included in the price of the regular group course.
Other comments
The teaching method in group lessons was too relaxed for me. It's not suitable for students who are motivated to learn the language formally and pass official exams. There is no written placement test, no exit test, and practically no grammar; just a continuous diversity of fun exercises focused on speaking (mostly among groups of two/three students with little supervision from the teacher). Most other students were old tourists and retirees looking for a fun side activity to their short visit to Lucca, they joined and left continuously according to their holidays, so there is no chance of following a formal syllabus. The exercises were pleasant, entertaining and sometimes fun. My fluency and vocabulary improved. By the time I left, most of my grammar-based persistent errors, which could have been tackled in time, had been solidified by fluency. The professional boundaries between staff and students were crossed regularly and I was subjected to witness this (rather hear it) at the apartment provided to me by the school. It got to a point when I had to confront them and they agreed to stop it for my last week there.
