What our students said about London

Rating: 5/5

It rains a lot in London. The sun goes down early. It's 4 o'clock. Of course, it's winter. Prices were too high. Most of the meals were expensive and tasteless. Unless you go grocery shopping, you will encounter fish and chips and fast food. I tried other menus, but they were not good for being expensive and expensive. I couldn't shop freely because I couldn't do duty-free, and it was hard to get around a lot because the weather was bad. Subway is very crowded. There are many places without street lights

I did not participate in night life, I wanted to focus on my studies. There is one comment about the social program: one day trip to Windsor, Stonehenge & Bath is too busy program for one day, there is no time to go sightseeing and it takes a very long time to return from Bath to London.

Excellent school, centrally located in Oxford Street. I had three teachers who I really liked. One of them really cared about her students and took the time to explain things properly to them. I really liked the way the classes were run: practising writing, grammar, vocabulary and conversation activities. This really helped me to become fluent. And the fact that the teachers corrected us every time we made a mistake helped enormously. I'm starting WLES again.

Information about London

Why London? London, the capital of England, is one of the world's most historically interesting and exciting cities. Here you will find the world famous Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey. It also has a incredible range of shopping and cultural facilities, unmatched in Europe, as well as the most innovative theatre shows, art exhibitions and plenty of typical pubs and international restaurants.
What we like about London

London is known around the world as being an excellent place to learn English. Not only is the accent one of the clearest in the country but it is buzzing with activity twenty four seven. The nightlife is fantastic with world famous bands and DJs often playing in one of the many music venues around the city. During the day there are an endless array of restaurants, museums, shops, festivals and, of course, the great British pub for you to visit. You will never run out of things to do. It is a great place to learn all about the history and culture of England with sights such as the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and Tower Bridge. There are excellent transport links within the city itself as well as to other cities further afield. It is a great base to explore all that England has to offer. As you can see, London has it all and more!

What we dislike about London

The reputation that learning English in London holds comes at a price, and that price is expensive. It is very pricey compared to other cities in the country. It is possible for you to find cheaper options but this does mean that you will be further out of the city or within the winter months. London is a fast paced city and often it can be difficult to connect with locals. Why not take up a hobby that you enjoy to break into a group of local friends.

Q&A - Questions and answers about London

  • It is absolutely possible for your daughter and her friend to study English together, our partner schools offer great courses for teenagers!
For example Kings school offers a summer programme for students aged 14-17.
    Gosia Mazur, LanguageCourse.Net - Feb 22, 2024
  • Many schools accept 16 year old students in their adult courses so you are very welcome to join the courses but residences almost exclusively accept students over 18. If you want to book accommodation I recommend that we book a host family for you.
    Louise Granath, LanguageCourse.Net - Jul 28, 2023
  • You can book just the course if you already have accommodation in London, no problem.
    Rubén De Haro, LanguageCourse.Net - Jul 03, 2023
  • I did some research for you and found two options:

    St Giles Central London:
This school has a family package, which I think will suit you well! They have three different packages:
    1. Family Day Package Only: 20 English lessons per week, activities and excursions.
    2. Family Day Package Plus: same as package 1, but with lunch.
    3. Family Full Package: same as Package 1, but with lunch and homestay accommodation with breakfast.

    Burlington School London:
This school has a junior course (day programme) for 11-year-old students and also offers general English courses for adults.
    Robin Rebecca Pietersma, LanguageCourse.Net - Apr 27, 2023
  • I am pleased to inform you that we have many partner schools in the UK that welcome absolute beginners.
    Sawsan Zein, LanguageCourse.Net - Apr 26, 2023
  • At the time of writing, the schools Speak Up and West London English School in London are offering English lessons on weekends. Just let us know your English level and we can send you the detailed information.
    Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Mar 19, 2023
  • In London, EC English offers group lessons in specific groups for students aged 30 and over, year-round.
    Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Mar 12, 2023
  • For a 17-year-old student, the general English standard course offered by Bayswater is an excellent choice. This course is made up of 20 lessons per week/15 hours per week that combine language learning with a special focus on developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This is best for students who want to study at a steady pace (Morning classes only).
    Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Mar 12, 2023
  • Of course, you can easily enroll in a language school. EU citizens do not need a visa to stay in the UK for up to 6 months.
    Gosia Mazur, LanguageCourse.Net - Dec 19, 2022
  • The choice of accommodation is very personal. Some students really enjoy staying with other students, such as in residences/campus areas. And others benefit much more from a host family, with more personal attention and the practice of the language also during dinner. Staying in the evening with your own family is of course also possible and may give you more peace of mind. It just depends on what she likes.
    Robin Rebecca Pietersma, LanguageCourse.net - Feb 16, 2022
  • If you like to use English for professional purposes, it would be good to take a look at the business courses. There you have more focus on business use. You can view these courses by viewing the course categories at the bottom of our pages. You can also opt for a course with, for example, 20 general English lessons per week and then private lessons in the afternoon to focus on English specifically for your type of work.

FAQ about schools in London

  • For transport in London, you can certainly buy a bus and tube season ticket in advance online. London's public transport service offers various options for buying tickets and passes, including on their official website or via their mobile app. This will save you time once you're there, and you can even take advantage of discounts or special offers by buying online.

When it comes to choosing a monthly pass, it all depends on how often you use public transport in London. If you plan to use the bus and Tube regularly throughout the month, a monthly season ticket could be advantageous in terms of cost per journey. However, if your stay is shorter or you won't be using public transport every day, it may be cheaper to opt for individual tickets or prepaid cards such as the Oyster Card. Make sure you work out what best suits your specific needs for getting around London.
Madly Simba, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Mar 06, 2024
  • In London, if you are over 50, you can choose LSI's 40+ programme, 2 organisations where you can study and live at the teacher's home or join a general English course with mixed ages. Which appeals most to you?

It is good to know that classes on LSI's 40+ programme are still with mixed ages. You will be offered 40+ activities after classes during this programme.

Most schools in London prefer to categorise classes by language level rather than age. Did you already have a school in mind? If so, I can research for you what the average age is in the schools of your interest.
Robin Rebecca Pietersma, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Jul 10, 2023
  • Cambridge exams focus more on everyday topics. IELTS is a more academic test, with questions about university studies or scientific topics. You can either pass or fail the Cambridge exam, and you can get different scores for the IELTS test, which you will then present when applying to university. The Cambridge exam can be taken 4 times a year, while IELTS exams are held almost all year round. The general IELTS test is most often taken to prepare for immigration. The IELTS Academic test and the Cambridge CAE and CPE tests are ideal for admission to foreign universities.
Maksym Sterpul, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Jul 04, 2023
  • Normally all junior programmes start on a Monday, as it is the day when the orientation and the welcoming is scheduled.
To start on a Wednesday can be requested, and some schools will allow it, but we always suggest starting on Mondays to make the best out of our courses.
Antonio, Area Manager Italian from Bayswater College - Aug 03, 2022
  • If you now have C1 level in English and you would like to obtain a Cambridge certificate for C1, you should opt for a Cambridge Advanced course (CAE). In London we have many options for exam preparation courses. At the top of the page, in the search panel, you can filter on CAE courses.
