Additional information
Positive aspects of school
The teaching was great, both the system and the teachers.
Negative aspects
Arrival day was a mess. They did not give the keys to my driver and I had to sit on the sidewalk for over an hour until one of the other students came back and was able to let me in. There were no instructions on rooms or keys. Luckily a long term student helped me out.

Lessons were very exciting, exceptionally nice teachers. Was great.
Accommodation
The accommodation was inferior, for example (if there was a meal at all) salad without vinegar, bread is a foreign word, Madame went to the gym every day, cooked hamburgers for her daughter, we got salad and grissini ... (2x), or ready-made spaghetti. The apartment was cold, my room was on the top floor, only separated from the living room with a curtain, so loud because Madame and daughter switched on the TV from 9.30 p.m. or had visitors. ABSOLUTELY NOT RECOMMENDED.

Positive aspects of school
All staff at A.L.C.E were VERY open, friendly and had a lot of humour. They tried to make our stay as convenient as possible. The teachers were VERY dedicated and tried their best, to teach in a difficult setting with constantly changing class-composition (new students every beginning of the week) with students from all over the world and various "levels" of understanding and language-"mastery" within the assigned levels (A1-C1). Thanks to all of them for their constant efforts! (as a former teacher myself, I admired them greatly!).
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Absolutely go to the cooking-classes (with the amiable chef Nunzia!), to learn how to cook original "specialtà bolognese" - and if you like it, also to the wine-tasting-events. They are great fun.
Other comments
If I had to make a choice - I'd chose A.L.C.E again. There were some minor flaws (like: some of the classrooms are more comfortably furnished than others, the breaks are a little "too short" for convenience - especially if you might want to get a coffee AND use the bathroom (queuing for both of them.... )), but language-wise I learned a lot during my stay and considering the constant change of students, the organisation within classes was surprisingly smooth.
City/place
Unfortunately the weather was a little abnormal (all over Europe) as it went from almost winter-temperatures to blazing hot summer-temps.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Competent and dedicated teachers! Thank you ALCE.
Accommodation
Unfortunately my room at Gandalf-House was only some meters from a road with through-traffic (incl. busses and very loud motorcycles also at night) and was therefore VERY noisy! In addition in my room (the others were fine!) I could not open the roller blinds higher than 30 cm because the strap of the blinds were on the verge of getting torn. Since the weather on some of the days was very hot, on THOSE days having the blinds practically closed was not a problem, but to air the room and get the heat and humidity out was generally difficult, especially since the AC - although functional - could not be used because of a very unpleasant smell (of the filters?) I did not complain to the school but the road and the blind problem they must be aware of and the heat, humidity and AC-problem I only noticed during the last days of my stay. As for the rest of the apartment, at our request the school tried to make our stay as convenient as possible: e.g. building in a shower curtain, replace missing cutlery, one of us also got a working-table in her room etc.

Positive aspects of school
The teachers were amazing, always speaking Italian and encouraging us to do the same - although this is difficult, I started understanding more and more. Everyone seemed to be so friendly and interested in what we were doing and what we liked.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
They use Whatsapp as a general communication tool with student groups - so make sure you have this downloaded on your phone. Do as many of the activities or extra classes as possible.Immerse yourself and you will get so much more out of the experience.
Other comments
I loved it, one of the best experiences of my life. Can't wait to go again!!
City/place
I didn't really check out the nightlife, so cant comment on this. It was really lovely to walk around even when it is raining because of the Porticos. Great public transport system and almost always on time.
Quality of teaching / language progress
This masterclass was absolutely amazing, the extra activities planned were educational, thoroughly enjoyable, in Italian and I learned so much I did not expect. I really like the small number of us - this was very special. I rate this course very highly, but had I had a higher level of Italian language skills, I would have learned even more. Overall a great experience, one that would be very hard to beat!
Accommodation
My hosts Patrizia and Gian Paolo were very kind and thoughtful and made me feel very welcome. Their home was in a lovely residential area with a great local pastry shop close by. They are vegetarian and the meals were delicious and varied. There was always fresh fruit. It was all very clean and my bed was very comfortable. Great to have a desk in my room as well. I really had a good time as their guest and would recommend them highly to other students.

I enjoyed the program and liked Bologna. Unfortunately, I could only attend for 5 days, so I couldn't participate in a lot of different activities.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
The buses were helpful once I figured out the routes I needed.
Other comments
The staff and teachers were very friendly and made my stay there enjoyable. I also enjoyed becoming acquainted with some of the students. The program was very structured in terms of grammatical objectives as well as content, which I think is ideal for someone coming for many weeks to really learn Italian from scratch. Because I was only there for a week and was just "refreshing" my skills, I would have liked a little more flexibility and more chance for conversation on diverse topics.

I enjoyed the instructors and the collegiality of my fellow students. The instructors and students created a positive spirit in the classroom and the instructors were effective in balancing teacher-led instruction with group and individual activities.
Other comments
The grammar and conversational teachers could coordinate their lessons better. If we are learning, say, the simple future in the morning why are we not using it as part of our afternoon lesson?

Insider tips about what future students should not miss
If you want to experience the city's life, you should not come to Bologna in the beginning/mid of August. The city is deserted and many shops and restaurants are closed. On the other hand it makes it possible to explore the city in a relaxed way.
Other comments
The organization of the school is fine, but one should not hope for fast replies. In regards to the assignment of the classes, eventhough they are based on a test, it can also happen, that you are placed in another course, if there are not enough students for a more fitting level. In itself the course is very worthwhile, especially because you are in Italy and you are forced to speak the language. My Italian has greatly improved there in 2 weeks.

Positive aspects of school
The school is amazing. I only regret that I chose to attend afternoon classes since some special activities such as conversational classes, phonetics which were organized and I couldn't go there.
Other comments
Host family : the lady was so sweet, but wasn't a cordon bleu. And I slept in a very bad bed, in an italian council flat with direct views to the railway and with noise associated at 5 am, 20 minutes by bus to the school: it wasn't really the accomodation I was dreaming of.

Insider tips about what future students should not miss
A very nice city, of course it is necessary to have an interest in history and architecture; it is very hot during the summer but the cities on the coast are within 1h30, 2h by train (the problem with italian trains is the same as for french trains, the delay).
Other comments
A very good school and very good teachers, unfortunately I was disappointed with the host family. I was expecting a real host family with whom I can eat, live, speak as it was advertised by the school, but the person was rarely at home, so I got bored quickly. Do the right choice. However, when I changed accommodation, the other students were great and I spent a great time.

Our accommodation was good, but some students found the hostel accomodation a bit cramped. Most students very focussed on learning. Bologna was very humid in July.
