Additional information
Positive aspects of school
I really liked the school and it was great to learn in a small group. It was a very pleasant atmosphere and people dared to make mistakes without being looked at askance by others. Our teacher Aurélie was super nice and taught us a lot. The school has a great location and is in an old Parisian apartment. Can only recommend it!
Quality of teaching / language progress
I definitely recommend the Intensive French course, the shorter one from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. is a bit short.

Small classes, good teacher, Annabel is great, nice mix of students (nationalities, ages). The building is very rustic - could have better facilities. Overall very good experience - I would return and recommend it.

Really just common room and bathrooms and overall common areas lacked space, the online presence is limited and out of date - these areas could be improved.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
The teaching method which was more focused on communication, participations and speaking progress
Negative aspects
There was a constitution building next to the course, and its noise was really annoying so that we couldn’t focus much.
Quality of teaching / language progress
The teaching method was great as it really helps students to progress their communication and speaking skills. However, it would be nice if before starting each class, the teacher explains on the day’s plan, lessons and general things to be learned and discussed during that day.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
Our teacher Anne Lise loves her work. That's why the quality of her teaching is so high. I have learned a lot. The small group size also allows for concentrated learning.
Negative aspects
On the downside, and not the school's fault, was the construction noise from the adjacent building site. But that will stop at some point.
City/place
Paris is loud, dirty, ugly, but always a great experience. I love this city.

The small classes were the best way to learn to speak up, even if you feel lacking in confidence at first.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Go for it! Open your mouth and do your best. Soon you will see great improvements. Out in the city, use your French. I found Parisians very willing to help if your were willing to try.

Very good school! Small and casual but very effective.
City/place
Wonderful city: great history and culture. Very good Metro system, but extremely crowded on some lines. I definitely want to come back again!

I was in Hadrian's class at first, then I switched to Annika's. While I was only with Hadrian a short time, he was very encouraging and pleasant, with a good sense of humour. Annika was the instructor I was with the for the rest of the classes. She really knows her grammar and was very strong in her explaining of idiomatic expressions and Parisian culture. She also had a good sense of humour. I would suggest this school to anyone wishing to learn French or improve their French. The small classes force you to speak up in French, which is, of course, the whole point.

Course materials somehow oldfashioned and complicated. No flexibility to adapt to specific needs of the student, even if explicitely asked for. Promised to take up some of the needed topics, but never did.

I took the semi-intensive course for a month and I have mixed reviews about it. I really enjoyed the class, but I have to say there is no syllabus provided at all. You just come there and you don't even know what you will be learning for the day. On my first week, we were learning about COD and COI. I didn't have any issues with it, but it could have been very helpful if we have been given the syllabus for the week in order for us to be ready for the class - it's for students who want to take the initiative and have a better learning experience. Different teachers have different teaching approaches here. I have to raise my concern here that although I believe the classes are great, some teachers will really stick to their methods. My previous classmate has anxiety issues, she does really well in class, however, when asked to standup in front of the class to present, she would have difficulties managing it. The first time it happened, she couldn't handle it and stepped out of the class whilst presenting. When she left, I then told the teacher that she has issues when presenting in front of a group, but well, he still insisted in carrying out his "public speaking" method. Some of my classmates including myself were very disappointed with this as the class is for language learning and not for public speaking. So, if you have any issues with public speaking, maybe you should raise this to the teacher from the very beginning. I wasn't able to join the activities after class, so I couldn't really comment on that.

Overall I was disappointed with my experience at Atelier 9, but first let me begin with the good things: The school is very casual and informal, which makes for a relaxed and social learning environment. All of the teachers I encountered were nice and friendly, and the location of the school is also very easy to reach from most parts of Paris. However, I found the learning environment to be far too casual. In two weeks I felt that I barely improved at all. A lot of time is wasted on long and drawn out exercises and games that aren't particularly effective. I understand that many other students appreciate this casual environment but I went to Atelier 9 to improve my French as much as possible and sadly this was not the case.

Insider tips about what future students should not miss
As we all know, Japanese grammar is different from other languages, so For Japanese, it may be more difficult to understand than people from South America and other European countries. They just pronounce it differently and may be able to catch on rather quickly. Don't be discouraged and do your best. Even though it's a beginner level, you might enjoy it more if you learn a lot of words before trying it.

In contrast to my previous experience of studying a language, you talk a lot during the class to practice each new grammar skill being taught, with french being the only language spoken (even in the beginner's class). The teachers are genuine in making you understand.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
The morning class focuses on introducing new grammar/concepts/themes, while the afternoon class focuses on going deeper into the subject and discussion. If you have the opportunity to talk a lot with french natives, the morning class might be enough to cover new grammar knowledge. Don't miss out on the weekly activities and force yourself to not speak English.

Few students per class which gives the opportunity to learn faster and to practice conversation better. They offer coffee and tea for free for all students. The afternoon workshops along with the guided tours are a fantastic idea to internalise the theory of French with everyday life.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
It is a small, familial school. If you are looking for technology and a lot of theory, this is not your school. They have a traditional teaching method with few students per class. Sometimes, there is a lack of organisation in regards to what they are going to teach but on the other hand, you can also strengthen those aspects where you see that you are more lost because the school is flexible regarding the agenda.
Other comments
The school facilities should be renovated, from the bathrooms to the walls, there are areas where the paint is bad. For me, the worst thing was that, being a small school, when they have a lot of students they use the kitchen as a classroom. I understand that they do not have more space but it is unpleasant because during the break, students enter, eat, etc and I find it unhygienic for those who want to eat (who are within their right since it is a kitchen) and for the student who receives classes in that room because it smells like food. In general, I am happy because I have achieved the level of French I wanted but for the money we paid it would be good to have the facilities refurbished.

The organization should be better. At the beginning of the course there was no explanation for the grading, duration of the course, etc. In addition, there are almost every morning a delay, in one day even more than 1 hour. My teacher was very nice, we had a lot of time to practice speaking. I wish she explained more in French. Overall, the stay was a lot of fun.

Other comments
They had 1 B1 and 1 B2 class. The students levels in each class vary greatly. I wish they had more classes so I could progress if I found a particular class too easy. I attended a different school and they had 3-4 different levels of B1. The first day of school was organised. We didn’t have the pass code and had to wait outside the school for a while. We didn’t complete the evaluation test until 10.30 am on the first day. Class started almost 11am. I wish they had the students come in earlier for the evaluation test so that the class could commence at 9 am.

I paid 175 euros a month to listen to the teacher talking about her life for the majority of the class time. It's a waste of money and time. Although the teacher spoke in French which could practice listening, I paid for being taught, not paid for listening to something pointless. And the teaching was quite unorganised.

Positive aspects of school
The location is near the centre of Paris, which is great. The class size was also good for the A1 level. The style of teaching was immersion, so the teacher speaks only French unless English was necessary, even in the beginner level.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
The teaching style is flexible, and each day we had paper handouts and exercises to do. You can use a binder to keep them organised and make a workbook. You can use your own French books to supplement the class if you want more structure, and ask the teacher since she is very approachable with French questions. I took care of arranging my own accommodations, and there are lots of hotels nearby.
Other comments
I'm a beginner, so I was put into the A1 beginner class, and found that challenging enough since we were immersed in French from beginning.

Positive aspects of school
It's as described. A boutique language school with a small number of students, with very good teachers and offering free valuable workshops. I did the intensive debutante class and it was unbelievable to see how colleagues that were scared to start talking felt at home using the French language after one month. I have been transferred to an upper level class but there was a very different atmosphere. I felt that it was better for me to learn the basics in a very organized and calm atmosphere. As almost everyone is from a different country, the classes become very valuable. Our teacher Adrian was excellent. Annabelle always had a smile on her face and wanted to help with any technical issues. Vanessa is the representation of what we all imagine a kind, delicate, beautiful French woman is. She also had an incredible technique and great teaching skills. The pronunciation classes that were offered with Vanessa were very valuable. Wish we had more. What is seen as being a constant is the dedication. Teachers had a good technique to work with international students. Adrian was excellent in keeping a good eye on everyone's capacity of improvement, cultural differences and good study atmosphere. Going to the next level for one more month.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Be very honest with what you believe you know and what level you really are at. Read "The culture map" by Erin Meyer before you share 4 hours a day with people that come from all over the globe. Take just one week and see if it works for you. If you have the time to come for a longer period, don't hurry to start at a higher level just because you can have a small talk. Be aware that people come to study and even if you are in Paris for a short period, take this school seriously. There are students that don't like to waste their time and money. If you take an intensive class, after some days you will feel tired and not willing to wake up early the next morning. That's normal but at the same time it is very challenging to not have one of the colleagues in the class as you learn something new daily. If you are in a beginner class, one's absence makes a huge difference for the next day's class. Enjoy it.
