Additional information
Positive aspects of school
Great location. Nice small classes. Very friendly teachers. You felt they knew who you were. Teachers made a good effort to include everyone and be positive. Private lesson was excellent but on the very expensive side. Prohibitively expensive (too expensive for many). A mixture of grammar and oral, which in theory was good. A really fun week which I loved.
Negative aspects
Felt the setting of students was too crude (makeshift) and some were too weak or too strong for their class. Facilities in the school were fairly basic. So much more could be achieved with things like interactive boards. Did not seem to be a clear plan about how to deal with students doing different length of courses. Expected to pay for a day when no teaching happened because of a ‘giorno festivo’. The day a teacher was absent we simply did an exact repeat of the day before's lesson. That was a day wasted. Too much writing on the whiteboard of things that could be given out in photocopies. Poor quality of photocopies. Not always clear what the aim of the lesson was. Felt that what you got out of it was very dependent on which teacher you got. I had two excellent teachers and two that were not so good.
Other comments
One of the best weeks I’ve had for a while but I feel that in terms of language learning and facilities it could be so much better.
City/place
A really nice size of city. Plenty to see and do but also not overwhelming. I would not recommend it in high season as even in low season the main tourist sights eg the Uffizi were impossible to get into.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Did not feel very intensive. Would have liked more hours teaching.
Accommodation
Nice flat with a nice walk to school every morning. The host was friendly and made sure that she spent an hour speaking to me each evening which was helpful for my language learning. Food was good and always on time.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
The instructor, the location, the cultural divesity of the other students
Negative aspects
Our particular program was a two-week course called la dolce vita 50+, meant to combine intense language intruction with daily cultural enrichment activities. The first-day "tour" of the city and another walking tour of Florence didn't include ANY history, architectural commentary, or other useful info! None!
City/place
Fabulous! Just the right size (everything easily walkable) and every street was a sheer joy to discover.

great city with many sights; but to learn Italian it is the wrong choice. More tourists than Italians. Main language in Florence: English

Especially for total beginners like me, it would be good to be able to repeat simple sentence constructions aloud in grammar lessons. The teachers could give this possibility even more. Just listening and writing down is not enough.

Positive aspects of school
The instructors made the materials fun to work on. I was only disappointed that we were not aware of the focus of program before we started.
Quality of teaching / language progress
I was surprised at the screening to determine the placement in the instruction levels. As my wife and I had done a lot of self study I was placed in intermediate level 4. That was fine for my understanding of the language structure, but did not meet my needs for basic vocabulary I struggled to study the upcoming material each evening, in order to have a modest grasp of the content. The instructors that I had, Sara and Fiorenza, were both excellent and made a point of writing the key elements of grammatical structures on the board which allowed me to follow as well as possible.

Quality of teaching / language progress
The Leonardo da Vinci Scuola di Lingua was absolutely fantastic. The level of instruction is very professional. The teachers only speak in Italian, but even if you are just starting out you still understand everything because the speed is slow and there are good materials that accompany each lesson. I spent a month here in A2 and by the end of it I did a week of a B2 speaking course and felt comfortable. I highly recommend doing this program if you're serious about learning the language, and I recommend doing some extra work on your own in addition to the course so that everything sticks in your memory.

Great teachers and superb methods of learning
Quality of teaching / language progress
The dolce vita program promised a lot but delivered hardly acceptable activities after classes. Since I am professional in tourism, 55 Eur/ day / person is a big money for casual walking through Florence or going by public bus to the piazza on the hill. To defend the price it had to be more professional with expert guide, entrance to some museum and some meal. Ratio price/ quality was shameless.
Accommodation
40 eur/day still requries good bed and clean room. It is not for the lowest standard.

With Sara we had a absolutely wonderful time. She is such a great person: open minded, funny, competent and just molto sympatico.
City/place
As long as one can stay in the calmer parts of the city everything is great. Florence has to think carefully about the fact that more and more and even more tourists will soon compromise the quality hard enough to make it less worthwhile to visit this great place.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Although we liked the teacher of the second week very much we have asked ourselves whether it is a good idea to change teachers every week. We believe that the result could be better with a continuous situation.

Give a phone number when organising meetings, in case we are late we do not know how to find the group during the afternoon activities. Guides presenting the city with more details
Other comments
Do not make meetings with students around a very long table. We can not talk so it's a shame ... Please round tables of 6 or 8 Max it would be so much better and it creates bounding otherwise we can be bored in a very noisy environment ...

I have booked the "Dolce Vira 50+" course in hope that there will only be student over 50. Unfortunately, this was only referred to the activities. The classes were mixed. Partly there were also 17 years-old teenagers. But in the end it did not hurt. You just assume differently in the beginning according to the name "50+". On the last two days I decided to to some individual lessons as well which would cost 30€ for 45 min. Therefore, I booked 3 x 45 minutes. And in the end it said on the billing that one lesson cost 40€. This made me the goodbye very easy.

Insider tips about what future students should not miss
If you are an older student (over 25) I do not recommend sharing a flat. The apartments are noisy, dirty, and the single beds are uncomfortable. I recommend a bed and breakfast! The school claims they will change the sheets at the 2 week point. It does not happen.
Other comments
Overall it was a positive experience but the older student should realize that the great majority of students will be under 23 years of age. Many of the computers did not work and there is no WIFI available at the school.

I found the acoustics in the classrooms to be fairly poor. Frequently there was a lot of noise from outside, and the classrooms are sparsely decorated which means that the sound tends to reverberate around the room, making it difficult sometimes to follow what the teacher, is saying As an improvement, I would suggest something very simple to be given to students studying Italian for the first - a list of standard questions that one can ask, to get along initially. For example, "Come si dice...", "come si chiama...", "Ripete per favore". Some grammatical definitions would also be useful, eg sostantivo, nome, maschile, feminile, significa, etc. It was a day before I worked out that "significa" translates as "meaning", not "significance". A vital difference!

It is a very big school, but well organized, all the people I met there were very friendly. Unfortunately the grammar classes are boring, but the conversations are very interesting. And what is very good is that you can meet people there from all over the world and make fantastic new friendships.

The school in Florence was by far the best out of all three. I also spent two weeks at the school in Siena which was good and then two weeks at the school in Rome. The school in Rome was terrible. Those working there were extremely apathetic towards my complaints that the school was an hour outside of the center by metro and bus, I had been placed with a family after I specifically requested twice to change the accomodation to an apartment, there was no choice about class scheduling and no prior notification that the courses were scheduled at different times due to lack of space, a couple of the teachers were not even native Italian speakers

Other comments
I am very happy, that I took the decision to come here and really realized it. The teachers are very good and because of very small classes, they can work with you and on individual problems of each student. I would advice to all foreigners, that they should join a course in winter - NOT IN THE MAIN SEASON - the classes are smaller and the city is not so crowded of tourists.

Some of the extra courses were not that great and for the money i would have expected better. We had great teachers, the only thing for the first two weeks the first teacher (whilst a great person)was not as good as the second for conversation as he was a relief teacher we were really behind the other class in terms of our conversation.
