Positive aspects of school
Thank you very much for organising my language course in Rome at the Leonardo da Vinci School. Everything worked very well and the teacher was very committed and was able to respond individually to our knowledge. I will most probably attend this school again.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
My teacher Alessandro was simply great. He was responsive to everyone. His lessons were effective and yet relaxed. We laughed a lot and still learnt seriously.
Negative aspects
I didn't like the fact that the school didn't respond to the students' wishes at all - I realise that this isn't always possible - always under the premise of keeping the level in a class at the same level. The reality was a little different.
City/place
I think Rome is a wonderful city, even if I wouldn't want to live there (I'm a country person). And it's definitely worth visiting it once, twice .... or more often.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Very good

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
Excellent location. Dynamic and friendly teacher. Nice mixture of teaching methods. Nice mixture of ages in the class. Good text book.
Negative aspects
Classrooms are small for the numbers in the class and depending on your seat you could not always get a good view of the board. Teacher spoke rather too quickly for A2. No study space i.e. a library or study room for students. Days were too short. After school activities were not possible if you had a 12:00 class or had to be back in your accommodation in the evenings. Text book did not have answers in the back so you could not check your progress.
Other comments
I’m not sure it has been very well thought out about fitting in students who are only there for a short period. The school badly needs a room where students can study especially as the teaching day is so short.
City/place
The school has an excellent location for exploring some of the main sights. Main tourist attractions are extremely busy with tour groups.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Was expecting a bit more from the course ie slides, lectures. In reality it was just photocopies from a text book about specific aspects. A nice teacher but she did not speak very clearly. The classroom was in the cellar and was very musty.
Accommodation
Very friendly host who made an effort to speak to you in Italian. Food was good, plentiful and prompt. There were two other language students in the flat. The overall feel of the flat was a bit chaotic. Didn’t feel a very nice area but extremely convenient for the metro. Took 45 minutes to an hour commuting.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
1) The contents of the books, the sequencing of the contents and the active, dynamic and participative pedagogical method. 2) Timely information from the Secretariat and Coordination in all areas.
Negative aspects
They have practically no library; not even a living room where you can work or read in peace, but two small tables and four stools in a hallway.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Rome is a city with a very high cost of living. This should be taken into account.
City/place
I really think it is very important to visit Rome because it is a "striking city" and has many artistic and historical attractions.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Very satisfied.
Accommodation
Breakfast was pretty much the same and quite poor. Every day I had the same breakfast as the day before and it became both monotonous and boring. Otherwise, I would say very good.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
partly friendly and open-minded
Negative aspects
From my experience (and the experience of other classmates), students who can only attend for one week do not seem to be given much priority. They are there and participate, but not even 5 minutes are spent on topics that the long-term participants had last week, to do another 5 minutes of repetition for the newcomers, for whom this topic may have been a little while ago. If you wanted to write something down, the papers were taken away because the teacher said we should remember it and not always write it. The correct solutions were often not repeated, but rather, for example, the words of the sentence were quickly tapped on the blackboard in the correct order, so that afterwards we still didn't know the correct position of the words. Together with a classmate, I told the teacher that we would like him to wait a moment for us to answer a question and not pass the question on to the next person after three seconds, so that we could hardly react ourselves. We were told that in Rome no one waits until the next day to get an answer.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
Location was terrific. Good course work. Class size was good … about 14 people.
Negative aspects
The teachers spoke too fast. Slower please to understand what was going on and to receive instructions for exercises. Moved too quickly. I changed levels because the first level was too stressful. I wanted the class to be fun and learn a lot at the same time. Once I change classes, it was better. I would have liked more camaraderie with more senior aged students. Having a longer period of time for the break… Like 30 minutes, would allow for more time to get to know other students. Finishing the day 15 minutes later would be a worthwhile trade off. Since one of the days was a national holiday, I would rather have gotten a reduced rate than trying to do make up classes and making for a very long day.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Not really.
City/place
We were surprised by how much we enjoyed living there for two weeks during the class. The Piazza Navona area is delightful, and a perfect location. Lodging in that area is quite expensive, however.
Quality of teaching / language progress
I would have enjoyed and appreciated the course so much more if the teacher would make an effort to speak more slowly and try to help students understand what is going on.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
Very dedicated teachers and super central location. Top one-to-one tuition!
Negative aspects
Far too large groups (15 students) for my taste, hardly any opportunities for questions and entirely Italian even for a beginners' course.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
More individual lessons or smaller groups. 14+ students is really a very large group.
Other comments
Events and opportunities to get to know each other are limited to eating pizza and visiting the stadium - a pity - no shared coffee or other initiatives by the teachers. Very large impersonal school.
City/place
Great city with a lot of possibilities. Very crowded and noisy.
Quality of teaching / language progress
30 lessons are actually 22.5 hours, as one lesson is 45 minutes. I knew that beforehand, but still not much individual tuition. Especially as the times are set and the school is very inflexible when it comes to requests for changes.

Really good school.

Especially nice to visit the historical things. Other than that, I wouldn't want to live there. Haha.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Course was really good. Good teacher. Learned a lot from it.
Accommodation
Apartment was fine. All facilities were there. I cooked myself as it was not a hotel. But I could cook, wash, etc. I had my own bedroom and bathroom. And a shared kitchen. It was 5 min walk from Roma Termini. And 45 min walk from school. It was 20 minutes by bus to the school. Perfect.

Positive aspects of school
The location was excellent and it was good to meet other people on the course. By the 3rd lesson I felt as i was making progress.
Negative aspects
The first day was chaotic with students moving in and out of the class and it would have helped to have had the book in advance. The classroom was small and noisy ( noise from outside). A greater range of teaching activities would have been good.
City/place
Loved it.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Again just having the book in advance to have some idea of the structure would have really helped.

I often didn't like the lessons with Cristiano. Exclusively grammar, no conversation, no varied methods. He often made fun of students. The conversation class with Erica, on the other hand, was excellent!

My energetic and engaging teacher Marta.
Negative aspects
Conversations teacher Rosamaria was too easy. I did not get the superintensive course I paid for. The slower students and constant entrance of new students slowed us down.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Do not expect your placement in class to be rated by your aptitude to learn, as in USA. Instead, they place you on your knowledge at the beginning, and the slow, fast, and average learners are all together in one class, which was discouraging for the slower, torture for the faster. Also, don’t expect the classes to be academic hours as in America, but only 45 minute lessons.
Other comments
Great atmosphere.
City/place
Endless beauty to discover.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Disappointed I couldn't have the superintensive course I paid for. Instead, only morning classes which were good, but one short conversation class in afternoon, (teacher was never on time, was often looking at her phone, often left class for a few minutes, spoke at times in English, and we ended early) only three days a week, were almost a waste of time and money. The last week was better since I was given a better teacher.

Don't count on the school's support or solidarity.
Other comments
Very bad experience. I would spend 7 weeks studying. At the end of the first week, due to the COVID crisis, they started offering online classes. Italy was starting their lockdown and students had to leave the country quickly. The sensitivity of the school was zero, they did not give me a chance to cancel my booking and only after insisting a lot I was given a voucher to return and take the course within a year. It is not easy to travel from Brazil to Rome and stay there for 7 weeks, without working and studying, I will probably never achieve this in my life, but even so the school was not supportive and they wanted me to take the online course, even though I said that the course would start every day at 04:00 AM in my country. I can't say anything about the quality of the course and the teachers,  but I warn you that if something happens and you need to count on the school's support and comprehension, it won't happen, you will not get any assistance. I consider that I've lost the course, I will never be able to do it and I ended up losing all the money, because the school has not even offered an agreement. If one day I have the opportunity to return to Italy to study, I will look for a place where I can count on some solidarity, in case something happens. I emphasize that I received help by everyone in Italy, by my host, by the airline company, by the school that I would attend after this course, but only the Scuola Leonardo da Vinci did not offer me any agreement or assistance. It was very disappointing.

I can't say anything about the nightlife and the surrounding area. Rome is a great city that, unlike other large cities, can be explored on foot. There are also many beautiful and interesting things to discover away from the hotspots that are besieged by tourists.

Smaller classes would be good, we were 15 students at times! Since our teacher was very competent and committed to teaching, the lessons were still very good. A limit of 10 or maximum 12 students should be observed.

Excellent situation in a historic building in a lovely old pedestrianised area not far from Piazza Navona and the Tiber, yet just a minute from a major bus route. Excellent historical/archeological walks led by a specialist tutor every Wednesday, and talks on history/geography/writers on other afternoons. These activities appealed most to the more mature adult students and were of a high standard.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
I'd highly recommend the late afternoon talk/visits, even though if you have morning classes it may seem inconvenient to return for them at 5.30pm (one advantage of afternoon classes is that they finish at 5.15, just in time for the extra events.)
Other comments
I was initially placed in an afternoon class but it was easy to change to a morning for my 2nd week. The school has created its own textbooks which centre on Rome & provide a lot of interesting information on Roman legends, history etc while teaching grammar in an entertaining way. I would have preferred each session to be split between 2 teachers as happens in some other language schools, since if you had a boring teacher who just plugged the same thing mindlessly for 3 hours, there wasn't much you could do about it. Students voted with their feet: after the 2nd afternoon was excruciatingly boring, the class dropped from 10 to 5 for the rest of the week. Obviously there is an element of luck in your teacher allocation - my 2nd one was enthusiastic and never boring. Classrooms were rather bare and just had hard chairs, no posters, though some did have prints of Italy on the walls. No social space, just a coffee machine in the corridor. Good WiFi, and a caretaker kept the place spotlessly clean. A plus point: lunchtime revision classes were offered at each level to make up for classes lost when the school was closed on a public holiday.

Combination of language education and cultural program (Dolce Vita). Teachers were motivated and played well into the level of the class. Most of the guides who accompanied us to the events in the D.V. program were excellent, especially Monika who deserves credit for her role.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Bring your own notebook(s). The school does not provide them (only a learning book). WiFi at school is spotty and (too) slow.
Other comments
The school is too lenient on people who are late in class and (even) eat/drink in class. A much more stricter policy on those issues should be implemented (distracts from class). And cutting the line at the coffee machine (why is there only one?) is unacceptable (even when one is from France). On occasion, somebody from the office broke into class and did a roll-call. In my view, bizzare (what is the purpose?) and a significant distraction. It interrupts class and the teacher and students need time afterwards to get back into the subject. Communication on aspects of the Dolce Vita program can be better. No notification was given beforehand that we would require to buy bus tickets (not all transportation was included) and when we went to Viterbo and made an artifact, we were not informed when these would arrive at school. Only after we asked questions ourselves, did we get answers (but never from the office...). And they did arrive, but only on the last day (just in time, yes).

Stay for more than 2 weeks since it is a pity to study a language for such a short amount of time. In hindsight, I would have liked to stay longer.

The school's facilities are not too modern, but are ok. Quality of teaching was good. The amount of social activities organized is a bit meager, but in the end this was also not so important since there is enough to do in Rome.

Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Try not to miss the free extra sessions on culture or grammar provided by the school if & when available. It would be a good idea for the student to attend the intensive courses and also live with an Italian family so that he/she is able to communicate in Italian outside of class as well.
Other comments
