All nationals require a valid passport.Only excemption are nationals of the following countries who may also present an alternative document of identification instead of a passport: Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia
Above mentioned: in possession of valid national ID card who are visiting as tourists for stays of up to 3 months. Nationals of Germany in possession of a passport that expired within the last year. Nationals of Austria, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland in possession of a passport that expired within the last 5 years.

Nationals of the following countries do not require a visa when entering as a tourist Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bulgaria, Brunei, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Switzerland, Chile, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, United Kingdom, Guatemala, Honduras, Croatia, Ireland, Israel, Iceland, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Latvia, Monaco, Mexico, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Norway, New Zealand, Panama, Paraguay, Romania, Sweden, Slovakia, San Marino, El Salvador, United States, Uruguay, Vatican City, Venezuela
Citizens of countries who are visa-exempt must still apply for an entry or transit visa before proceeding to Malta.
