- Younger students should consider that the average age of students at this school is significantly higher than at most other schools.
Venue: City Hall School of Spanish is located in the historic city of León, in northwestern Spain. The school is housed in a modern building just across the street from the River Bernesga and the pedestrian promenade which follows the river’s path. A nearby footbridge crosses the river and leads into Leon’s old city, where students can discover the many attractions of León: the immense Convento de San Marcos; León’s Gothic cathedral; the 10th-century Basílica de San Isidoro; and the Casa Botines by renowned architect Antoni Gaudí. The school’s neighborhood is quiet and the beautifully landscaped Parque Quevedo with its resident peacocks is a short walk away. León’s high speed train (AVE) station and the main bus terminal are just over a five-minutes’ walk away from the school.
The school: City Hall School of Spanish promotes a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, helping students gain the most from their learning experience. The school offers a range of courses suitable for beginners up to those fully proficient. Their DELE programmes, along with their General and Intensive General courses, are among their most popular, with Business Spanish, Academic Years courses and ELE programmes (Español Como Lengua Extranjera) also available.

“The teacher was good. Laura picked me up from the train station on the day of my arrival. I liked that a lot.”
“To my surprise, we used a very old book. I was very surprised that there were no smoke detectors either in the house where I slept or at school. That seems very dangerous to me. In the Netherlands its use is mandatory.
I didn't like the chairs. I would have liked to have a window in the classroom.

“The teachers were friendly and welcoming. Christina, who I had for three of the five days was lovely! I appreciated how they didn't feel required to stick to their lesson plan and would branch off into a "discussion/teaching" arising out of a topic from the lesson.”
Insider tip: “I enrolled in this course as a break from my walk on the Camino. If Pilgrims have the time, this is a wonderful opportunity to learn a little Spanish while enjoying the amazing culture and history of Leon, Spain.”

Other comments: I appreciate that the School was able to fit me in during my five days in Leon, with very little advanced warning. I'm not sure how many Camino Pilgrims (or tourists) attend this school but I think that a curriculum with a stronger focus on "tourist Spanish" would have been helpful. For example, my lesson could have included assignments to use Spanish at the hotels, in the restaurants, at the bus and train stations, in the shops and pharmacies, asking for directions and having friendly conversations with Spanish speaking people that you meet along the Camino!
