Each day consists of 3 hours of classes, from 9:00 in the morning to 12:10 in the afternoon. All four language skills are covered in class, but priority is given to speaking and listening. New language is introduced through either topic based classes or classes that practise everyday English. All the vocabulary and grammar taught is continually recycled in order to help you remember it. To further reinforce the work done in class, supplementary exercises are set as homework. You are welcome to let us know how much homework you would like to receive. As well as your classes, you'll have a weekly tutorial in which you can discuss your progress and assess your learning goals. You can also bring up any non-academic concerns you might have. There is no social programme with the semi-intensive course; however, the school would be happy to give you sightseeing advice so that you can explore the area yourself. Many of the region's famous sights can easily be reached by public transport. You are also free to make use of Talking Towns: a unique project created by Durham School of English that allows you to find out about Durham through its shops and businesses.

HLI offers prospective students the unique opportunity to study English while living in their teacher’s home in Durham, England. This course option grants you 15 hours of weekly one-to-one classes, and you can have the content tailored to your own personal interests, objectives, and goals. When you’re not too busy you will be able to take in the views of historical buildings such as Durham’s impressive variety of castles and Cathedral architecture, or maybe go for a walk with your homestay family or a friend in Derwent Valley.
