Positive aspects of school
"The atmosphere at International House River Maya is not that college pressure at all, its relaxed authentic Mexican hospitality was a safe space for fun interactive learning.
Would I go back? Yes I enjoyed the experience and the people at International House River Maya. While It felt like I was just there for a moment I genuinely felt like part of the International House River Maya family.
The location was easily accessible, the teachers were warm and friendly, the coordinator worked hard to get people in classes that would help them progress in their individual Spanish learning journeys.
The lessons started late enough we could grab a coffee and walk to class, they offered coffee sweet breads, eggs and other assorted breakfast items at the school's main kitchen for a very small fee.
Frankie, offered to prepare food such as eggs and coffee at a cost far below anything you'd find in town. When class broke for lunch, Frankie was there ready with lunch supplies mostly toasted sandwiches, coffee, juices etc. Again at such a low cost there is no point to look for anything else."
Negative aspects
"This was my first experience with learning outside the US, I found the lessons, taught in a mix of English and Spanish, with a focus on Spanish a bit hard to follow at times. But I understand that’s what I signed up for.
The facility is a bit rustic for my taste."

"We enjoyed Playa de Carmen we spend a week visiting adventure parks in the area via the Xcaret group. Xcaret, Xel-Ha, etc. The restaurants in Playa de Carmen were a mixed bag and we ate all over the spectrum from fine dining to street tacos. We visited Myan ruins in the local area and went to the beach. We really didn’t buy anything outside food and experiences we wouldn’t get anywhere else. The local people were welcoming and helpful and we never felt that safety was a problem."

Positive aspects of school
"The school is very well located and all the teachers are dynamic and welcoming."
Negative aspects
"The little chairs with shelves where we spend several hours are not at all comfortable. Big tables around which we could sit would be much more practical for putting our books and at the same time would stimulate exchanges between students.
What's more, the follow-up between teachers would be much appreciated. On a few occasions, we did the same exercises over again, because they hadn't spoken to each other."

"Just don't forget to establish links with the other students. That's what made all the difference to our stay."

Other comments
"Positive: Frankie, who is in charge of the cafe, among other things, is extremely friendly. Always smiling and available, he is a definite asset to the school.
Negative: One of the teachers was not at all friendly. She didn't even introduce herself during the first lesson and always gave very concise answers to my questions, as if I should have known the answer... even though I was there to learn! It's a pity, because she's a very good teacher in other respects, but I'm not sure I would have repeated my classes if I'd had her from the start."
City/place
"We really enjoyed our stay. Playa del Carmen is a beach town where life is good. The locals are extremely friendly, but the town is not clean and the pavements are extremely dangerous for anyone daring to venture off the Quinta Avenida."
Quality of teaching / language progress
"Very good, but as mentioned, lack of follow-up between teachers. What's more, the initial grading left a lot to be desired. I was with my partner (who speaks Spanish very well), even though I am a beginner in the language."

"Location was great. Marion the cooking instructor was awesome."
Negative aspects
"Teacher focused overwhelming majority of her attention and her eye contact during instruction almost entirely on the only male student in the class. Was like the female students were only observers and not participants. She exhibited little or no patience, was terse and it felt as if she was annoyed and inconvenienced."

"Very disappointed. Has a lot of potential but they squandered it on having a below par teacher. Just because a person speaks Spanish and has experience teaching grade school children doesn’t mean they are qualified to teach adults in a private professional school or university. A completely different skill set and training is required."

"Unfortunately, the beach is not very pretty, due to the presence of algae on the beach and in the water. This makes swimming unpleasant. It was hot, of course, but the humidity was rather difficult. Otherwise, the atmosphere was festive, with lots of tourists, stores and restaurants. The main street is very crowded. Several tours are available to visit the surrounding area at reasonable prices. As we couldn't swim in the sea, we found hotels with swimming pools for a fee."

"The teacher was very old school type who just asked us to answer worksheets. Not much interaction. Not much practice for learning the language. My 4 hours of private classes were MUCH better, as it was interactive and we practiced, not just filling in conjugations. I heard from 3 other students that a high level class was similar (worksheet based). Because it was such a small community (meeting in the same place for breaks, etc.) I felt I couldn't complain. It was a very weird experience. There were lots of negatives that I will write in a long letter to the school, so they are aware."

Positive aspects of school
"The instructor, Lucy. Also, the school's willingness to help with issues outside of the norm--doctors, housing, anything. The staff in Playa del Carmen is truly amazing."

"I entered as an Elementary Level student and stayed for 4 weeks. I really feel I needed at least two months but couldn't do that, due to family, other obligations. Would recommend staying longer if you are able. If not, plan to return within a year. I am continuing my studies at home, with Duolingo application as well as Rosetta Stone and CDs."

"Keep an open mind, because firstly you are in a different country and should be respected the traditions and culture, and secondly, you will meet people from all over the world. Follow the lessons and especially practice the language without searching or forming groups of the same nationality. Mingle yourself with the knowledge of the people and language."

"Nonstop bus from airport arrives less than one block from residence. No need to pay more. I paid $75 for transport from the airport, an unnecessary expense. The residence is almost ideal. It is close to the school and situated near restaurants and services. The rooms are basic but comfortable."

Other comments
"The school has serious, but correctable problems. I came to improve my speaking, but did not receive a sufficient chance to do so, because of 7 students in my class. 7 is too many. Most of the 7 students spoke better than me. As a result, they dominated the discussions. Also, when my ability was initially evaluated, they determined my speaking ability was only intermediate level one, but they made no effort to determine my grammar level. As a result, I did not learn anything new in grammar. And sadly, I did not get enough chance to improve my speaking.
The student residence is excellent, but the food needs improvement. It would not take much effort. Also, at the residence, students should be encouraged to speak only Spanish. Again, this would not take much effort. Because I did not learn much Spanish and because I spent money on transport, scuba diving and salsa which was not well organized, I have given the school a low rating. The problems can be corrected."
