“The atmosphere at International House River Maya is not that college pressure at all, its relaxed authentic Mexican hospitality was a safe space for fun interactive learning.
Would I go back? Yes I enjoyed the experience and the people at International House River Maya. While It felt like I was just there for a moment I genuinely felt like part of the International House River Maya family.
The location was easily accessible, the teachers were warm and friendly, the coordinator worked hard to get people in classes that would help them progress in their individual Spanish learning journeys.
The lessons started late enough we could grab a coffee and walk to class, they offered coffee sweet breads, eggs and other assorted breakfast items at the school's main kitchen for a very small fee.
Frankie, offered to prepare food such as eggs and coffee at a cost far below anything you'd find in town. When class broke for lunch, Frankie was there ready with lunch supplies mostly toasted sandwiches, coffee, juices etc. Again at such a low cost there is no point to look for anything else.”

“This was my first experience with learning outside the US, I found the lessons, taught in a mix of English and Spanish, with a focus on Spanish a bit hard to follow at times. But I understand that’s what I signed up for.
The facility is a bit rustic for my taste.”

“The school is very well located and all the teachers are dynamic and welcoming.”
“The little chairs with shelves where we spend several hours are not at all comfortable. Big tables around which we could sit would be much more practical for putting our books and at the same time would stimulate exchanges between students.
What's more, the follow-up between teachers would be much appreciated. On a few occasions, we did the same exercises over again, because they hadn't spoken to each other.”

Insider tip: “Just don't forget to establish links with the other students. That's what made all the difference to our stay.”

Quality of teaching / language progress:
Very good, but as mentioned, lack of follow-up between teachers. What's more, the initial grading left a lot to be desired. I was with my partner (who speaks Spanish very well), even though I am a beginner in the language.Other comments:
Positive: Frankie, who is in charge of the cafe, among other things, is extremely friendly. Always smiling and available, he is a definite asset to the school.
Negative: One of the teachers was not at all friendly. She didn't even introduce herself during the first lesson and always gave very concise answers to my questions, as if I should have known the answer... even though I was there to learn! It's a pity, because she's a very good teacher in other respects, but I'm not sure I would have repeated my classes if I'd had her from the start.

“Location was great. Marion the cooking instructor was awesome.”
“Teacher focused overwhelming majority of her attention and her eye contact during instruction almost entirely on the only male student in the class. Was like the female students were only observers and not participants. She exhibited little or no patience, was terse and it felt as if she was annoyed and inconvenienced.”
Insider tip: “Try different school in PDC or Ih in a different location.”
Details of the review
Quality of teaching / language progress: This private one on one teacher was good. Would not call this a “Business Spanish” course but enjoyed the grammar instruction nonetheless. Other comments: Very disappointed. Has a lot of potential but they squandered it on having a below par teacher. Just because a person speaks Spanish and has experience teaching grade school children doesn’t mean they are qualified to teach adults in a private professional school or university. A completely different skill set and training is required.

Rooms are equipped with a small refrigerator and freezer.

“Connecting with other students afterward. That is where I was able to practice and learn.”
Insider tip: “Staying at the residence looked much better for the price, versus homestay. Also, probably a better way to practice speaking with others.”
Details of the review
Other comments: The teacher was very old school type who just asked us to answer worksheets. Not much interaction. Not much practice for learning the language. My 4 hours of private classes were MUCH better, as it was interactive and we practiced, not just filling in conjugations. I heard from 3 other students that a high level class was similar (worksheet based). Because it was such a small community (meeting in the same place for breaks, etc.) I felt I couldn't complain. It was a very weird experience. There were lots of negatives that I will write in a long letter to the school, so they are aware.
