I would fly to Gdansk and then get a bus to Kaliningrad. Is this the best way to get in? It's the cheapest and easiest for me but maybe there are some specifics I need to follow?
“A bus from Gdansk to Kaliningrad is the easiest way to travel. Some people also use private transfer from Gdansk airport to Kaliningrad, but it’s more expensive. The school can help you buy the ticket for the bus.

If it goes well and I'm enjoying learning Russian and I like the city how easy would it be to extend my length of stay and possibly get a hotel job or something simple ?
“Unfortunately it’s absolutely impossible to extend the visa. To stay there longer you will need to get a new visa in your country. The school can make a visa invitation for you for 90 days. But it will be a study visa for short term courses, and it’s strictly forbidden to have a job in Russia with this type of visa.
