All participants in the General course will start off taking a level test that is intended to make sure that all students are placed in a group that will be appropriately challenging and stimulating for their English language skill development. Each lesson lasts 45 minutes, which is the ideal time for introducing a topic and performing some high-quality work related to that subject.
The maximum number of students at any time is 12, ensuring that learners feel comfortable speaking in English to their group, and asking their teacher for any extra help. The groups are typically smaller than those of the summer months.
The General English Course is available at 6 levels all year round: Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. Students will be placed in the appropriate level according to the results of their placement test and can move on to higher levels according to their progress. Progress tests are held frequently throughout the course to ascertain if a student is ready to move to a higher level.
Beginner Level:
This is an introductory course for those learners who are starting their study of English for the first time. It provides a comprehensive language base intended to prepare even a complete beginner to move on to the next higher level. The course will cover the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. In this way, even on a beginner’s level, the students are encouraged to develop their own learning strategies. Lessons are directed in a gentle manner so as to encourage the less-confident learners but, at the same time, with plenty of practice. Successful students will be able to conduct simple conversations and have knowledge of simple English structures.
Elementary:
In this course, the emphasis is on learning the communicative use of English in everyday situations and is meant to accelerate the pace at which the students achieve certain language independence. Clear objectives in these lessons give the students more conversational skills and more listening and writing activities. The course is an opportunity for young/adult clients to maximise their study time and obtain the necessary language skills to help them move on to the next grade. At the end of the course, students will be able to ask simple questions, express their needs in simple language and understand basic texts.
Pre-Intermediate:
This course is a vital step towards achieving a preliminary level of proficiency in English Language communication without which students will find it hard to continue their studies. It is designed to enable students to communicate easily with each other in English and to feel at home in an English-speaking environment. The course will motivate the students to achieve a real breakthrough into the next level of study, enabling them to work largely on their own.
Intermediate:
This Course is designed to help students improve their English usage and integrate those aspects of language learnt by them in the past. Course material is based on current and contemporary topics, giving the students the necessary practice to create their own personal contributions and to build up self-confidence. Essentially, this course aims to refresh and consolidate existing levels of correct English and, at the same time, introduce new skills to match the wider use of English at the next higher level.
Upper Intermediate:
The aim of this course is to provide students with meaningful material that helps them to improve their fluency and practice of English in everyday use. At this level, the students themselves are ambitious enough to embark on more in-depth language assignments, such as extensive reading, word-formations and varied sentence patterns. In all cases, language items will be related to real-life situations so that students, already proficient in the use of English, will widen their communicative perspective by participating in discussions, role-play and essay/report writing.
Advanced:
This course is structured in such a way as to help students achieve their full potential, stretching their capabilities in the use of idiomatic English as an everyday medium of communication. Training will be intensified in listening comprehension and in writing practice and language focus will explore analysis as well as knowledge of grammar points. The methodology in this course will be done in an enjoyable manner so as to sustain the students’ interest as they sharpen their ‘real world’ skills in vocabulary, idioms, casual conversation and academic discussion. At Advanced level, the emphasis will be on the use of idiomatic English and expressions as well as elaborate vocabulary to express an opinion both in the spoken and written language.

This programme is exclusively for mature students. It allows them to improve their English, make new friends and experience Maltese Mediterranean culture. There is a social programme available where activities can be booked individually at an additional cost.
The 50+ Course is an ideal choice for adults who are over fifty years of age wishing to improve their English while making the most of an enjoyable leisurely holiday in Malta. The course is principally formatted around Conversational English practice; the emphasis on lexis and conversation, however, is organically linked to the history and culture of Mediterranean society. Life in Malta is conducted in an English-speaking ambience that enhances the use of English throughout, be it in shops, banks, restaurants, theatres, cinemas, museums and hotels. It is therefore quite natural for our 50+ students to socialize and participate in excursions, visits to historical places, museums and events such as theatrical performances or annual festivals that expand their knowledge of English while introducing them to the colourful history and Mediterranean lifestyle of Malta in general.

IELTS has nowadays become the most important EFL exam for students learning English as a foreign language; whether for career advancement (work purposes) or as an admission prerequisite for a foreign university, the need to sit for an IELTS exam is increasing annually. The number of students taking the exam in Malta has also increased drastically throughout the last few years. At Gateway School of English GSE, we have also experienced an increase in the number of students choosing to take the IELTS exam preparation course and this is the reason why our IELTS classes are open every week all year round. So if you book an IELTS class at any time during the year, even for a week, you will be guaranteed the lessons from Monday to Friday. We also guarantee small group tuition with a maximum of 8 students per class so that the teacher can focus on the individual needs of each and every student in the class.
Specifically in the IELTS test, some questions ask students to describe their own cultures. While teaching, you will be able to observe your students’ answers and their points of view on their culture. For example, the IELTS question may ask something that you would never ask your student. When your student answers, you will be able to observe their answers and get to know more about their culture.

Subjects covered include personal development, setting goals, management skills, self-awareness and the importance of good communication in business, corporate image, corporate social responsibility, supply chain, managing conflict which is also an important subject in business as it is encountered frequently at workplaces be it in small family-run companies as well as large multinational organizations. Other topics covered in Business English include marketing and brand awareness related topics such as strategic marketing, marketing plans, identifying your right audience etc. Subjects such as risk management and investments are also included in the more Upper Intermediate/Advanced level programme and would include listening/reading tasks followed by a discussion on topics such damage control and crisis management. As you go along covering these Business English topics you will also have the opportunity to widen your Business English vocabulary which will help you to better express yourself both in writing as well as when speaking about certain topics with your peers in your workplace, university or Business school. Students are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of speaking practice in achieving greater levels of fluency. Studying grammar is pointless without having sufficient opportunity to use it in spoken language. Conversation is a central aspect of language acquisition and the activities of this course help to sustain an intelligible flow of language as well as encourage listening comprehension. Our conversational programme is aimed at increasing the student’s confidence and active memory through rich and varied discussion around topic areas. These lessons specifically concentrate on speaking. The lessons typically involve debates, discussion, pair work (with other students) and presentations. The functional focus is on expressing opinions and preferences, disagreeing and negotiation skills.

Successful students will be able to conduct simple conversations and have the knowledge of simple English structures.
Elementary:
In this course, the emphasis is on learning the communicative use of English in everyday situations and is meant to accelerate the pace at which the students achieve certain language independence. Clear objectives in these lessons give the students more conversational skills and more listening and writing activities. The course is an opportunity for our young / adult clients to maximise their study time and obtain necessary language skills to help them move on to the next grade. At the end of the course students will be able to ask simple questions, express their needs in simple language and understand basic texts.
Pre-Intermediate:
This course is a vital step towards achieving a preliminary level of proficiency in English Language communication without which students will find it hard to continue in their study.
In all cases, language items will be related to real-life situations so that our students, already proficient in the use of English, will widen their communicative perspective by participating in discussions, role-play and essay/report writing.
Advanced:
This course is structured in such a way as to help students achieve their full potential, stretching their capabilities in the use of idiomatic English as an every-day medium of communication. At Advanced level the emphasis will be on the use of idiomatic English and expressions as well as elaborate vocabulary to express an opinion both in the spoken and written language.

At Gateway School of English GSE we have also experienced an increase in the number of students choosing to take the IELTS exam preparation course and this is the reason why our IELTS classes are open every week all the year round. So if you book an IELTS class at any time during the year, even for a week, you will be guaranteed the lessons from Monday to Friday. We also guarantee small group tuition with maximum 8 students per class so that the teacher can focus on the individual needs of each and every student in the class.
Specifically in the IELTS test, some questions ask students to describe their own cultures. While teaching, you will be able to observe your students’ answers and their points of view on their culture. For example, the IELTS question may ask something that you would never ask to your student. When your student answers, you will be able to observe their answers and get to know more about their culture.

As with all one-to-one lessons, the main advantage of this arrangement is that the individual attention of the teacher is focused entirely on one student, so the course itself is agreed by student and teacher together, and is based on the professional needs of the student, which s/he is asked to discuss with the teacher at the start of the course.

- Exam Preparation Group courses 20 lessons per week (available all year round except July & August).
- Exam Preparation Group courses 30 lessons per week (available all year round except July & August).
- Combination Group General English 20 lessons per week + One-to-One Exam Preparation (private tuition) 10 lessons per week (available all year round including July & August).
The combination course of General English + One-to-One exam preparation course is ideal for those students wishing to improve their General English skills (listening, speaking, reading & writing) as well as language systems such as pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar while preparing for their exam, especially if the students are of lower levels.
For exam preparation group courses the maximum size per group is 8 students per class. The duration of each lesson is 45 minutes.
If the student wishes to sit for the exam at the end of the course in Malta our academic staff will assist with the registration process and will help the student fill out the application form. If the student has already decided on the exam date prior to arrival in Malta and is planning to sit for the exam after finishing the course, our staff would need the exam application form upon booking so that we can submit the application form to the exam centre. Our staff will guide the student and assist through the application procedure and will provide all the necessary information by e-mail.
Cambridge ESOL Examinations include various levels such as KET, PET, FCE, CAE and CPE. Certificates cover basic exams for those beginning to learn English, through to advanced certificates for those who have attained a high level of fluency.
These exams are recognised around the world by employers, universities and government ministries as proof of ability to use English.
In these courses the teacher provides effective practice in all areas covered by examination requirements. The learning programme is organised in such a way as to provide a solid grounding in the linguistic tasks tested by the examiners. Small group tuition and individual attention by our teachers contributes to the motivation needed by the students to maximise their performance in the exam.
Below is a list of Cambridge Exams & the corresponding CEFR level for each exam (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages): - KET (Key English Test) → CEFR A2.
- PET (Preliminary English Test) → CEFR B1.
- FCE (First Certificate in English) → CEFR B2.
- CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) → CEFR C1.
- CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) → CEFR C2.

Course addressed to teachers of primary education who want to improve their English at the same time that they develop professionally by update their knowledge regarding teaching methodologies.
This programme includes 2 half day activities (Valletta by night & Mdina Tour).
The focus of our Gateway Teacher Training Primary School Programme is based on interactive, experiential learning that meets the needs of all teachers in primary education. Course participants can benefit from a hands-on approach in the practical workshops in the company of other teachers, while discovering methodologies which will allow them to evaluate their current teaching purpose and practices in their own teaching environment.
Who is this course for?
Practising or former teachers of English or other languages in primary education;
Language teachers with a keen sense of their role as teaching professionals who would like to keep themselves up to date with the latest trends in teaching (in terms of methodologies, techniques, resources etc), and take responsibility for their own professional development, to continue reinventing themselves and becoming the best in their field;
Teachers who would like to improve their own language proficiency in English in a customised setting, by being given an opportunity to focus on the language areas (skills and systems) most relevant to them;
Participants with a B1 level of English (CEFR).
Objectives:
- To develop participants’ understanding of language teaching and learning across the variables of students’ level, abilities, learning style, age and cultural background.
- To refresh participants’ knowledge of English by helping them brush up on their practical language skills and extend their lexico-grammatical repertoire, based on their individual and collective needs, with particular attention to their specific areas of weakness. This component of the course carries a strong experiential element as it is an opportunity for teachers to momentarily benefit from being in their students’ position.
- To motivate participants to take control of the choice of teaching materials they use in class, whether it is by creatively adapting their curricular resources, such as traditional course books, or by drawing on and exploiting the potential of authentic non-instructional materials taken from everyday life and popular culture (such as cartoons, comics, blogs, vlogs, TV episodes, TV / radio commercials, music, social media etc.).
- To explore and practise new teaching methods while trainees revisit their own current practices and reflect on how they can improve and add to aspects of their teaching (delivery technique, lesson planning etc.), while sharing examples of best practice with peers from similar backgrounds.
- To understand how best to design level-appropriate graded tasks while respecting the authentic language around which they are designed.
- To unravel the mysteries of motivation and understand how it happens and sometimes fails to happen.
- To debate the benefits of learner autonomy and peer projects (learner cooperation and collaboration), as well as the challenges presented in light of many societies’ increasing multiculturalism and the overall impact these have on language education systems at large. Reference will also be made to the Maltese (bilingual) setting and participants’ own socio-cultural contexts.

Course addressed to teachers of secondary, tertiary or adult education who want to improve their English at the same time that they develop professionally by update their knowledge regarding teaching methodologies and techniques.
This programme includes 2 half day activities (Valletta by night & Mdina Tour).
Our Teacher Training Courses (also eligible for Erasmus plus funding; Teacher Training KA 1 Mobility) aim to give teachers of English or any other language taught as a foreign language the opportunity to further their professional development as language teaching practitioners in their respective settings, whether among primary or secondary school children, with students from the same or diverse backgrounds, and even in a classroom with impaired learners. Whatever your training needs are as a serious teacher in search of self-improvement, we are sure that you will find something to whet your professional appetite in our selection of carefully structured and seriously thought out teacher training programmes.
In terms of methodology, participants on any of our teacher training courses can enjoy a combination of explicit instruction and direct teacher involvement. Following the format of a workshop, sessions are:
Interactive with plenty of ongoing group discussion and opportunities for participants to draw on their own experience and exchange ideas they feel are worth sharing;
Demonstrative in the presentation of teaching approaches, lesson planning and materials design;
Practical and hands-on when it comes to trialling some of the ideas presented in class, with the aim that participants will be able to take something tangible away with them (a specific technique, a particular activity, a general way of planning lessons or adapting resources, etc.);
Experiential in nature, so that participants can experience the content being presented and promoted (methodologies, teaching styles, lesson plans etc.) first-hand, from the perspective of students, through which they will be better positioned to make judgements on learning effectiveness;
Evaluative with opportunities for individual reflection, teaching practice, lesson observations and peer feedback.

For students preferring the ‘homestay option’, the school works with a number of carefully chosen host families living within 5-15 minutes’ walking distance from the school, which means that you would still be in the same neighbourhood. Staying with a host family enables students to interact actively with the local culture and adopt a more familial lifestyle, while ensuring total English language immersion.
If you want:
-to experience the Maltese way of life and live with a family in a typical Maltese home.
-to get the full benefit of total language immersion in a house where all members are native speakers of English.
-to live not further than 5 to 15 minutes away from the school on foot.
-to live in a smaller family setting with fewer people in the house as opposed to a residence/hotel.
…the homestay solution is your best bet for accommodation.
The school staff has personally known all the families hosting their students for years, and can safely say that they are reliable people with whom students have always been happy to live. In fact, they know them so well that they can easily match students with the family most suited to their individual preferences. We also carry out regular inspections to ensure that the standards of the premises and services promised are being maintained. All our host families are fully licensed by the Malta Tourism Authority.
Moreover, the fact that they are all native English speakers gives students maximum exposure to and practice of the language. The best proof of our students’ satisfaction with these families is in their recommendations to their friends back home, who very often end up enquiring and requesting to stay with these families too when they come on their own language trips with Gateway School of English.
