Positive aspects of school

The lessons and the teachers were fantastic. The organisation too! Everyone was so friendly and helpful and it was just great fun.

Negative aspects

I had wished for more teaching material. Blocks, exercise books and material that I can continue learning with at home. I would have liked more activities after school. The excursions on offer were quite expensive.

We only slept at the host family's house for one night. The rooms were a disaster and we didn't feel welcome. On the first day of school, the school immediately found a solution and we were accommodated in a very nice flat right next to the school.

Positive aspects of school

The teachers are very nice. You definitely learnt something and it was a good experience.

Negative aspects

Unfortunately, I didn't find the price-performance ratio very good due to various things. The organisation of the school was very weak (lack of introduction for certain students, overlapping hours for surf and Spanish lessons... e.g. surf lessons until 08:00 and start of Spanish lessons at 08:00, but 40 minutes walk needed to get from the beach to the school...). In addition, the excursions offered by the school were always much more expensive than if you had booked them yourself.

3-4 weeks is the optimum duration

It's okay, but rather expensive (all of Costa Rica) and has a lot of men whistling after you ... Very hot and lots of rubbish on the streets. It was good for the time, but I wouldn't go there again now :)

It was great when the times passed each other by and you didn't have to stress

Accommodation

Unfortunately negative again :( The kitchen equipment was a bit lacking... frying pans from which the protective coating was coming off (very unhealthy) and the fridge where you didn't know whether it was mould or just dirt. It would also have been nice if at least some washing up liquid or hand soap had been provided...

Super nice teachers; Small classes (at least in the low season); Beautiful school grounds with garden and pool; Accommodation is close by (5 minutes walk); Accommodation close to the beach and shopping street

Negative aspects

When the organiser of the activities dropped out due to illness, the activities were also cancelled without replacement. I was lucky that a teacher still did something for our class.

City/place

As a city, it is not very interesting (as is the case with other cities in Costa Rica), but the beach is quite nice and there is a lot to do around it. Jacó is also a good starting point for other towns/beaches/parks.

Gloria was a great teacher. I learned a lot!

Accommodation

Good opportunity to get in touch with other students at the school. If there were any problems (e.g. wifi down), they were always fixed quickly.

The teachers are always in a good mood, there is always a great atmosphere in the school and although the lessons are sometimes relaxed you learn a lot. The afternoon trips are very expensive, but the free cooking classes were great.

Negative aspects

Sometimes I didn't find the division of the students in the class (in terms of level) particularly good ...

Night life is very popular. The beach is ok, but there are nicer ones. It is difficult to swim in the sea, but good to surf (waves). It's very hot in Jacó Beach! (In June, by all means)

The apartment was ok. But a bit tight for the three of us. Sometimes something broke, but the school took care of it immediately and quickly found a solution ...

Insider tips about what future students should not miss

Buy your smoothies at the Fruteria next to the apartments or near Jaco Walk next to Oasis, it is a little place on the right (cheaper and fresher).

You are doing the right thing by choosing Academia Tica. A perfect organization!

I booked the course for 4 weeks and could not be more satisfied than I was with the location and the school. The teacher's learning system is very much tied into conversation and it is in my opinion the most important thing. I would absolutely recommend Academia Tica.

They have very small group classes to ensure you are learning at the appropriate level. This was really great and made me feel like I was really getting what I needed from the course. Also, everyone was super nice. :)
