The Intensive English courses are for students with the ambition and the desire to work hard to achieve even greater progress in their English. This course is more demanding than the General English 15 and 20 courses, and students study both morning and afternoon – but if you really want to move ahead quickly, this is the course for you.
As with the General English 15 and 20 courses, the focus of the Intensive course is on the four key language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking – plus additional work on vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.
Students at B2 or above have the opportunity to join the Fluency course in the afternoons, where the focus is on listening and speaking. The Fluency classes are usually small, and students are able to make significant progress in their conversation skills.

The General English 20 courses are an enhanced version of the General English 15 course, with one additional hour per day of lessons in specific academic areas. This extra hour is a separate and valuable course, enabling students to strengthen their English language skills, using a range of subjects from history and politics to British food and entertainment, to activate their speaking, reading, writing and listening skills.
Students in an exam class will also have the opportunity during this hour to work on exam strategy and test practice.
These classes are usually smaller than the General English 15 classes and give students greater opportunity for individual work with their teacher.

This is the school's most popular English language course, largely for the simple reasons that lessons are in the morning, and end at 12:30 (General English 20 ends at 13:35, and Intensive English 30 course at 16:00 or 17:15.)
Teachers use course books published by the UK’s leading suppliers (Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press and Pearson produce many of the books the school uses), continually reviewing the latest editions and switching to them when they appear. Titles used include English File, Speak Out and Navigate.
Your textbook is included in the free welcome pack on your first day.

The General English 15 afternoon courses are designed in the same way as the morning General English 15 courses and focus on the same areas, but use different textbooks. This enables students to take both the morning and the afternoon courses, strengthening their skills and building greater confidence.
The afternoon General English 15 course is cheaper than the morning course, simply because some students prefer to study in the morning and to have free time in the afternoon. Not everyone feels this way, and the lower price helps to persuade others to change their minds! The result is a busy school in the afternoons as well as in the mornings.

The school's Cambridge exam results are among the best in the world, with truly astonishing pass rates.
They have been running Cambridge exam courses for almost 20 years, and they have some of the most experienced Cambridge exam teachers you could find. Lessons under their guidance are fun, interesting and ultimately, for almost all of their students, very successful.
As with the General English courses, the school's Academic team continually reviews the syllabus for each Cambridge exam course to ensure lessons are a perfect fit for the latest exams. In class, teachers use the most recent up-to-date editions of Cambridge exam textbooks by leading British academic publishers, and teachers are among the best-qualified in their field.
Throughout the courses, there are frequent progress tests for all students every two weeks, enabling teachers to check how much each student has learned and to identify any weaknesses, and then to help them overcome any weaknesses. There are also monthly tutorials for all long-stay students.

Includes 20 lessons IELTS exam preparation and practice, plus additional one-to-one tutorials ensuring personalised attention and guidance in exam strategies. Exam fee is an additional GBP 240.
The 4-week intensive IELTS (International English Language Testing System) courses provide full and thorough preparation for the IELTS exam. The IELTS courses always end on a Friday and in most cases, the IELTS exam is held the following day (Saturday).
With a strong exam focus, these courses guide students through the four different parts, familiarising them with IELTS exam techniques and requirements, so that students know exactly what to expect and are confident of their own abilities when they sit down to start the exam.
Many IELTS courses combine IELTS preparation with General English – but this is an unproductive strategy, and the student’s efforts become diluted. These intensive 4-week courses are far better, enabling students to focus completely on the IELTS exam and to achieve their full potential in the exam itself.
Students who need to improve their English level should enrol in a General English course before switching to the IELTS course (for example, 12 weeks General English + 4 weeks IELTS). On average, students need to study in a General English course for 12 weeks to improve their IELTS score by 1 point.
OSE has an international reputation for excellence in examinations. Since they started to run their 4-week IELTS course, 96% of students have achieved the score they needed.
The Oxford IELTS testing centre is 100m from the school.

Most of OSE students choose the homestay option. Living with Oxford residents is a great way to learn more about the UK and British culture, and of course it's a lot easier in many ways than living in an apartment, as the host does all the food shopping and cooking, the cleaning, and even your laundry!
What you get
In a homestay your breakfast and evening meal are provided (lunch at weekends, too); your laundry is done for you (although you can usually do it yourself too, if you prefer); and you have a warm, safe home to come back to after an exhausting day in school!
What you need to bring with you
Just as if you're going on holiday, you need to bring your own toiletries (shampoo, shower gel, shaving equipment, hairbrush etc). Everything else – including towels – will be provided by your homestay.
Location of homestays
OSE homestay families are located all over Oxford, although most of them are in the north. This is one of the best parts of the city for homestay and there is an excellent bus service, with dedicated bus lanes.
Students sometimes request a homestay in the city centre, but as the city centre is mostly university colleges, shops and businesses, very few local residents live here. So it's usually impossible to find homestay places in the city centre itself. A small number of homestay places are within walking distance, and most of the school's homestay places are only 15 – 25 minutes by bus.

Questions and answers about Oxford School of English
- My son is 16 years old and I am not sure if I should book 20 or 30 lessons per week. What time are the lessons and what is the content?
When are the activities and what activities are offered?“The schedule for the different courses is as follows:
General English 20:
9:30 – 10:45, 11:15 – 12:30, 12:45 – 13:35
Intensive English 30:
The times depend on the level of the student. Students who have a level between A1-B2 will have two lessons in the morning and two in the afternoon (9:30 – 10:45, 11:15 – 12:30, 14:30 – 15:45, 16:00 – 17:15). Students who are in our B2E-C2 level will have three lessons and then fluency class in the afternoon (9:30 – 10:45, 11:15 – 12:30, 12:45 – 13:35, 14:30 – 16:00). The fluency class is designed for students who are higher level and it is a mixed class for students who are in our B2E-C2 course. The B2E class refers to our B2 Cambridge preparation class.
In the summer we may be running a few extra activities in the afternoons such as punting, museum visits, bowling, which would run from approximately 14:30 onwards. Therefore, if you think that this might be of interest to the student it may be better to take the General English 20 course so that he can take part in any activities that we might run. Alternatively, the student can also decide to add extra classes later if he decides when he is here that he would like to take more lessons.”Sara, from Oxford School of English - Nov 16, 2022 - I want to go to Oxford, but while I am there I will have to continue with my virtual English classes. I would like to know, with this in mind, which course would be the most suitable for me.“If during the weeks you want to be in Oxford you have to continue with your virtual classes, what the school can offer you will depend on the timetable of those classes. If those virtual classes with your teacher are in the mornings and you can only come to the school in the afternoons, then it is best to book some private lessons or join their group course of 15 group lessons/week within the following timetable: Monday to Friday, 14:30 - 17:15.”Rubén De Haro, LanguageCourse.Net - Mar 13, 2023
