You will study the systems of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and discourse, and the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. In the afternoons you can choose to focus on the language skills you need to improve most. The General English course is taught over six levels: beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced.

Success in a Cambridge English Qualification can afford you better job opportunities and access to many universities. Each Cambridge English Qualification is based on a level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
The two Cambridge Exam Preparation courses at ELC are aimed at preparing students for the Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) and Cambridge B2 First. The courses will give you a deep insight into each exam’s scoring criteria and structure. You will gain an understanding of the test questions you can expect to encounter, with plenty of practice tests, so you feel confident on exam day. You will also learn crucial time management strategies while honing your skills in the four core skills that will be tested in the exam – speaking, reading, writing, and listening.
Suitable for students at a B2 CEFR level, the B2 First Cambridge English qualification is widely accepted by businesses and educational institutions internationally. Our B2 First Preparation course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to approach the exam with confidence. As the exam tests your ability to give opinions and present arguments in both spoken and written English, you will receive both theoretical and practical training in these areas.
The exam is comprised of four papers, with the speaking component of the B2 First exam is conducted in person with examiners, as well as another candidate in order to mimic a real-life setting. Therefore students will receive intensive practice in communicating with native and non-native speakers. In addition, you will broaden your grammar and lexicon.

Chatting daily to your hosts is a wonderful way to develop your English outside of the classroom.
Most of the Homestay accommodation is located in two areas in Cape Town: historic Bokaap in the City Centre, and the Atlantic Seaboard, which includes Green Point and Seapoint. The Homestays in Bokaap are a short walk from the campus, while students on the Atlantic Seaboard usually take the MyCiti bus or an Uber to get to school.
Breakfast and dinner are provided by your host, and you would usually expect to eat with them. Free WiFi and laundry services are also included, but do bear in mind that internet speeds in South Africa may be slower than you are used to!
The family was very hospitable and the house was pleasant, yet I expected something different. For the price, you can stay in luxury areas in Cape Town.
It would have been just as well if you had pointed out to me the high crime rate, that you don't wear jewellery ..."

Student opinions about UCT English Language Centre, Cape Town
- unfortunately it was semester break
- the teachers were very motivated, committed and creative
- this refers to the choice of topics and varied lesson design
- Interesting current topics were chosen: Environment, countries' stereotypes of people, slavery; (we visited a museum during class - Slave Lodge), women's rights - was especially exciting as there were only young Saudi Arabian men in my class
- scientific writing and also creative writing were practised.
- The highlight for me was the tutorial system - I didn't know it yet.”
Unfortunately, there were only 3 days of extracurricular activities in one week. Nothing at the weekend and given the fact that I was almost the only European and due to criminality, solo tours are far too dangerous and not possible, I could not use the potential of the many possibilities... What a pity.
I had asked specifically about this and it was confirmed to me that activities were taking place.
I was not happy about that.”
- Good contact person availability, good organisation”
