Additional information

Great instructors who took time to help.
Negative aspects
The activities after school that we have to pay extra. Some are very pricey. Also when the class is small ie: 3 students the instruction hours is reduced to 2:15 hours.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
If you stay in Salerno take the opportunity to see the surrounding area on the weekend. Naples, Pompeii, Amalfi boat ride is at the opposite end of the Lungo Mare from the school. Bring sandwiches for lunch and people watch on the benches behind the school on a Lungo Mare. If you like to run bring your running shoes. Great place for a run.
Other comments
Great staff especially instructors. Need to take credit cards for payments. I had to pay everything in cash.
City/place
Great place to use as a base to tour the Amalfi area and nearby cities. Great train connection to Sicily, Rome, Milan, Caserta and Pompeii.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Good private lessons helps with conversation.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
- spontaneous support when changing rooms, as my room was too low for my height (slanted) and it was raining in - Lessons: first small group, then group of 2, then 45 minutes individual lessons ("Bildungsurlaub") - Special requests were catered for and grammar was explained again; interesting topics; books were provided; lots of free speaking - Lessons in groups of 2 and individual lessons: Teacher was always well prepared; answered all questions competently; very patient even if the answers to the questions sometimes took longer to form sentences; he repeated the student's answers so that improvements in his own sentence structure and vocabulary could be noted; always showed interest in what the student said; did not stick firmly to his own preparation so that conversations/topics could deviate; lessons did not end abruptly despite the end time ("Overtime").
Negative aspects
- Test at the end of each week I would have liked to be graded, at least an assessment - I would have liked a final test with assessment - The school and lesson evaluation form was completed during the group lessons following the weekly test. This resulted in a lack of teaching time and too little time for the assessment. It would have been better to do it the day before the end, possibly in your own room. I couldn't write everything down the way I wanted to - Evaluation of activities from the school: neutral, as I had so many lessons due to "Bildungsurlaub" that I could only take part in the orientation tour through the city.

City/place
- very appealing with the historic centre, churches, narrow and high streets, right by the sea. - Safety: I felt very safe. There is a lot of police on site - Cleanliness: an Italian problem. Too much plastic in general. Rubbish is often just thrown anywhere and can be found in the most inconceivable places. Although waste separation is closely monitored.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Very good, varied, it was possible to talk a lot about various topics
Accommodation
- First room: attic, slanted ceilings too low for 172 cm tall people. Rather for shorter people, max. 165 cm. It would be useful to enquire about height before allocating this room/apartment. Unfortunately, it is also very dark and there is only a small window with a fixed grille in front of it. No terrace/balcony - Unfortunately it had rained in. However, the school acted immediately when I pointed out these two points and I was given a new appartment in the afternoon (fortunately, same building, same floor). It was perfect. A flat with separate rooms (bedroom, kitchen, hallway, bathroom), fully equipped. Large windows with a small balcony. No extra charge for me. I had expected such a flat at "Standard". Owners of both flats very friendly - Meals: not rated as I cooked them myself. Kitchen equipment sufficient

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
Everything: the personalised treatment from the teachers, the warmth when teaching, the location of the school...
Negative aspects
Weak points are some classrooms with round tables where the student's back is to the blackboard and also, in some cases, there was no or insufficient air-conditioning.
City/place
It is an interesting and touristic city without suffering of "mass tourism". It is a strategic point to visit both the Amalfi Coast and other places of interest such as Pompeii or Naples.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Everything's perfect.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
The lessons were great and structured with group tasks, books were lent out and what is very important, the rooms are air-conditioned!
Negative aspects
Afternoon classes were postponed (because we were too bad for the group) and were scheduled in the middle of the day, so longer afternoon activities had to be a bit shorter.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Getting to know all the people from all the classes/courses! Met lots of cool people.
Other comments
In the one building, as far as I know, there was no drink/water machine.
City/place
Salerno was really great. Unfortunately, there are only a few beaches nearby, which are also moderately good, but otherwise a beautiful city.
Quality of teaching / language progress
The courses were great and the teachers all have their own way of teaching Italian well!

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
Its unbeatable location in Salerno and the friendliness of all the people working at the Academy. The teaching is good.
Negative aspects
I had to pay for the accommodation in cash, with the credit card I could only pay for the Academy. In the "cooking and wine" programme, the cooking class and the wine tasting in the 2nd week were very similar to the first week and I was the only one enrolled in the programme.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
In the general programme, the Academy organises activities every day, usually for a fee. It is also possible to sign up for specific activities in other programmes (50+, food & wine) if places are available.
Other comments
There are students from a wide variety of countries.
City/place
Very pleasant town, next to the sea. It is easy to walk around and has a multitude of restaurants, bars, shops, etc.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Some activities are done together with the 50+ programme. Cooking and wine activities take place even if there is only 1 participant, so in this case you must have a good knowledge of Italian to understand the instructors.
Accommodation
Accommodation not normally provided by the school. It was hired because of the large number of students. There was a steep ramp to climb and then several steps, so it might not be suitable for some people.

Negative aspects
I did not like how we were divided into different groups. I had written what level I have done in Sweden. First I was placed in a group where the students were able to have discussions and conversations. Then I got into a group for beginners. The last week I was finally placed in the right group. We were three people who had studied the same level/course in Sweden, and we were divided into different groups. Since all the three of us are language teachers with a long experience of teaching, we must say that we are very disappointed. We have paid for ten days of education. We only got nine, due to the European Day of Languages. This day was of no interest to any of the students. Most of us left, disappointed and angry since we felt that someone had stolen a day from us.
City/place
It's a nice city, but I miss all kinds of tourist information.
Quality of teaching / language progress

Positive aspects of school
Very motivated and friendly staff. Great leisure options at fair prices.
Negative aspects
The allocation of the numerous students into groups seemed strange, in my group the level of previous knowledge was very different and the level was actually too low for me. But I didn't care enough to ask for a change.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Boat trip to a place on the Amalfi Coast. The locally produced limoncello.
Other comments
Rooms in beautiful historic palazzi directly behind the promenade by the sea.

The two-to-one one course certainly paid off. In a group, the spread of levels is greater and therefore less progress is made by everyone. Too fast for some and too slow for others.

Positive aspects of school
The staff, they are all friendly and competent. Teachers (mostly women) are patient and understanding and they seem competent and motivated. Time flies in class (2 hours, break, 1 hour) and there are quite a few social activities in the afternoon. But these activities are enough for a month. If you intend to stay longer, you will finish all the activities.
Other comments
It could be refurbished, especially the toilets. Classes can hold up to 10 people but with all the material it is hard to fit 10 people in there. I think they should only place 5 o 6 adults in each class. Chairs and tables need to be changed, and they should paint the walls and change the lights. The decorations seems old. The staff is so nice and so competent that the rest is not that important. The general lounge is a bit empty.
City/place
A countryside town with a limited number of cultural activities. Museums are not interesting, but at least they are cheap or free. Some monuments are also free so you can spend a few days. It is surprisingly clean for a city in the South of Italy. But the city centre is not very well preserved. It is safe city and the natural environment is nice. If you want to move around, there are enough places to visit around.
Quality of teaching / language progress
It is a small school without many levels so, I had to switch class for a more appropriate level. Classrooms are supposed to be for 10 people but they are not comfortable at all for 10 adults plus furniture and books. I would say 6 or 7 the a mire ideal number.
Accommodation
I was in 2 accommodation options. They are both fine, situated in a busy street (the whole city centre is). Common areas are not really inviting and the tables are small. Mine was slightly bigger but not big enough.

What I liked most about the school: the location, the teachers and the helpful administrative staff
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
For many trips - especially to the Amalfi coast - it is much cheaper and more relaxing to go there on your own by ferry or bus. The schedules of the ferry and bus companies are all online. When you go e.g. to Amalfi on a school-organised trip, you usually go back on an earlier ferry so that you have little time to go swimming or explore the place at your own pace.
Other comments
The teachers are great but the (presumably management-imposed?) focus on grammar rather than on specific topic-centered vocabulary seems a bit outdated to me.
City/place
Salerno feels safe and has a beautiful Old City. The beach closest to the school (Santa Teresa?) is ok, but a bit dirty and frequented by rather dodgy people. But there are nicer beaches to the east of the city center, and the beaches of the Amalfi coast can be easily reached by ferries ('traghetti') or by bus. The problem with the public buses is that they don't stick to the schedule, and especially in the evenings, there's a risk that they never show up (this happened to me and several other students at the Accademia Italiana in various places on the Amalfi coast).
Quality of teaching / language progress
The teachers were really good, highly motivated and helpful. I guess they have very concrete instructions what to teach each week as everybody on the same level gets to do a test at the end of every week to checks student's progress. So I can't blame it on the teachers that we focused mainly on grammar. We also made a lot of conversation, but it was mainly random and not centred on a particular topic. In the first week, we mainly practised the correct usage of the verbs 'essere' and 'avere', which is fine, but it would have been more useful to learn everyday survival phrases (e.g. how /what to order in a bar/restaurant, how to give and ask for directions etc.). In general, there was much more focus on grammar than on vocabulary. I would prefer a more topic-/content-focused approach (Content-Integrated-Learning). The activities offered were good, but in my opinion often overpriced, especially the guided walks. The classrooms were very small and it was often difficult to find space for one's books on the table.
Accommodation
My room and the entire apartment were quite small, but very well equipped (with dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, iron etc.). The location was ideal, in the centre of the lively Old City, but still in a fairly quiet, traffic-free corner. What I liked less was that the airconditioning was externally controlled, so that you could only switch it on between 6.30 and 8.30am (when I needed it least), and from about 2pm and 6pm. I would have needed it most at night, to cool the room down before going to sleep. Luckily, the apartment is in a shady corner and so doesn't heat up badly during the day.

The school had a large number of students of various ages when I was there in October. As a result, there were classes for all levels of Italian, and there were many activities organised by the school in addition to the classes. Teaching was of a high quality. The school organised visits to Pompeii, various parts of the Amalfi Coast and other places of interest both during the week and on Saturdays.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Salerno is relatively cheap for eating out by the standards of other Italian cities. It is also a very attractive smaller city. There is a small beach, where you can swim, not far from the school.

A visit to the tourist office to be notified on cultural offer of the city the school giving no information about it and even seems not to be informed of what is happening in its own city!
Other comments
Leisure activities are expensive, unattractive and almost exclusively focused on the " food." Some examples: the visit of the city tells us less than we would have done with only a brief guide to the hand (the oldest church was closed and the school has not organized a special opening for us); the screen for movies is a television screen and the school has not managed to install it properly; Furthermore, the screening was preceded by no prior explanation; we really felt the school staff did as little as possible. I can compare because I was staying in Tropea last year. There, the staff was committed much to make us love the place. I only have seen the director of Salerno for a few seconds. In Tropea, the manager was always present, knew each one of us. We have not received either practical information about the city (bus tickets, etc). Well, except as a result of culinary apprenticeship excursions, no common meal or drink was organized to allow new students to know the others (in Tropea, two hours of introduction followed by a shared meal). In short, this aspect of the school was disappointing and it is even more distressing that Salerno is a fascinating city that deserves much more than its reputation.
