Positive aspects of school

The school is in a very nice location. The size of the classes was very pleasant. You got a new teacher every week. They all had different characters, but they were all really nice and cool. At the beginning, it wasn't easy to listen to and speak Portuguese for 4 hours. But after a while, you got used to it.

Negative aspects

In the first week we went to the Fado Museum. That was very interesting. From the second week on, the director was on holiday and unfortunately there were no more afternoon activities. I would have wished that this would have been continued anyway.

City/place

Lisbon is a beautiful city. There are just a lot of streets that go uphill and that can be a bit tiring after a while. Especially when it's 36 degrees.

Accommodation

The location was top of the homestay. The room was nice and I even had my own bathroom. Joana is a very nice and cool person. I would love to stay with her again next time.

Very good teachers, good didactic structure in the lessons. Lots of opportunity to speak.

Negative aspects

Facility a bit cramped. The toilet door did not fit in the door frame and could NEVER be closed! The problem seemed to have existed for some time!

I have learned a lot in a two weeks period, I understand the people on the street and I can communicate in a basic way. I am happy with the result :)

Negative aspects

Sometimes too much of a vocabulary was assumed. Some knew what they were talking about, but others did not. Maybe we should pay more attention to the students' level of knowledge in the future, because not everyone is at the same level.

I didn't realise that accommodation with a host family would cost. I would have liked to have been told beforehand. But everything worked out and everyone was very helpful :)

Lots of fun, and interesting, but expensive (none of the museums and galleries are free).

In the end, we don't get 4 hours of learning a day because the hours include a half hour break and the classes always start late. so it ends up not being 20 hours a week, more like 17, which is less value for money.

Overall, I found all the staff to be very friendly, personable, open-minded, helpful and dynamic. The two teachers who taught me during the time were very well trained and had a very good general knowledge. They helped to break down barriers in speaking with their uncomplicated manner.

Negative aspects

The classrooms are very small, so no more than 8 pupils should get a place. Usually, however, there were 9 to 10, so that spare chairs with backrests were really "squeezed in". All in all, the whole area was cramped and there were no facilities such as a library or quiet room as stated on the school's homepage.
There was a lack of interactive phases in the lessons and overall I would have liked more space for speaking, reading and practising pronunciation. On several days, there was (too) much writing, especially grammar, which I found a shame given the precious time. The teachers talked a lot and it was predominantly classic frontal teaching.

Taking a language course for longer than two weeks.... it is not enough....

I think it would have been helpful for me to define my language level more precisely. The placement (via the internet) is too general, and there were students in the course who could already speak fluently....

Lisbon has a special soul and it can be found in every corner through the countless "pastelaria" and "jardim" with kiosks and seating options....Simply beautiful and cosy. The city is a mass of contrasts and offers so much to discover! I am thrilled!

Accommodation

I saw my host family very rarely, for the most part I was alone and took care of the cat. My host mother was trying, but not present. However, I was allowed to use the entire appartment, which was of course a luxury, given this beautiful large old flat.

Young team with a lot of drive and good humour.

Negative aspects

Lot of loose sheets in addition to the textbook: Distribution of the respective sheets at the time of their use would be easier for the students. Thus, one had to search each time which sheet (and which page of it) of the stapled collection should be worked on.

Besides the friendly enthusiasm of the teachers, I also enjoyed the relatively high-paced learning - I managed to learn a lot in only 2 weeks! Much more than expected.

Remember to ask the teachers and employees about good places to go for coffee, lunch, and sight-seeing. They really have a better idea than travelling guide books.
