Maria is an extremely passionate and dedicated teacher. I liked the small classes which meant everyone had plenty of opportunity to contribute. Maria insisted on everyone always speaking Italian, which was challenging but certainly improved my confidence and ability to communicate. I found the additional one-hour of private lessons I had arranged made a huge difference to my progress. Maria was also extremely generous with her time in taking us on excursions two afternoons each week and one day on the weekends. This meant we got to experience things that would have otherwise been inaccessible to those of us without a car. Orbetello is a fantastic place to study Italian - a beautiful, historic town in a great location with fantastic food and lovely people who are very patient and helpful to those of us trying to learn their language.

Negative aspects

Perhaps a more gentle introduction on the first day for those students who have not had previous opportunities to communicate only in Italian. It was a bit disorientating to be given all explanations in Italian from the outset, and I was sometimes unsure of what the arrangements were and afraid I had missed something important.

This is a very small school and Maria does everything herself, including the teaching, excursions, finances, administration, marketing, etc., so don't expect it to be like the bigger schools run in other parts of Italy. If you accept this, it will be much easier to make the most of the experience and the learning opportunity. Getting to and from Rome airport by taxi is very expensive (i.e. 240 Euro from Rome and 350 return) but my flights did not allow time for me to get the train (which means you need to change once and then get a bus from the train station in Orbetello to the city centre). So if money is an issue, try to arrange flights that will allow plenty of time for the train and bus, which is much cheaper.

If I had more time, I would have stayed longer than the three weeks I spent with Terramare.

I learnt a lot, although obviously with such a small school it was challenging for the teacher to manage different levels of ability amongst the students.

It was close to the flat I privately rented, located just in the center of the historical city of Orbetello.

In case you choose to be accommodated within a family ask if you can cook and where you room is located. If it is located on the main street "Corso Italia" it is very noisy.

Other comments

I did not like Maria not speaking clearly and taking care of her emails during the course. The afternoon activities were organised according to the mood of Maria and did not start before 3pm sometimes even 5pm: what to do from 1 to 3-5pm? We were 3 very different levels in the course, so there was little chance for me to improve.

The main teacher, Maria, organised several social gatherings where we (the pupils) all spoke Italian casually. This was very useful and fun.
