Additional information
Positive aspects of school
I never get bored because the teacher changes every day during a break.
Negative aspects
There are many classes in which students talk to each other. During that time, the teacher leaves the room, so the students may end up without reaching the correct answer.
City/place
The school was good, but the people of Genoa aren't the type to open up and make friends right away, so I think it's a city where you'll come to understand the good things in a long term rather than a short term. Not recommended for short stays. Also, compared to other cities

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
Value, started each class on-time, rotated teachers so the students could learn from each teacher's teaching style. The administrative staff (Michela) was extremely helpful, instructional & welcoming. It was wonderful when the entire school students would gather in a classroom on a Friday afternoon and sing Italian songs together that were typed on our hand-outs. This was a nice change and approach to understanding the Italian language.
Negative aspects
Too much listening to recorded, rapid italian conversations on a sub-standard audio speaker. It was difficult to hear the recordings due to poor audio quality and very rapid dialogue. I would hear plenty of Italian spoken in public, and very few people spoke as rapidly as our audio recordings. It would have been advantageous to have added an audio/visual component to the teaching. Such as a short five minute clip from a movie first without subtitles and then with subtitles. I find this is a very good way for me to learn. The school provided an Italian grammar book which was a good thing. However, my suggestion is that the book provide explanations in the language of the student. Since I do not speak Italian, reading the book entirely in Italian limits what I comprehend. Having some English written explanations/introductions would have been helpful in my understanding. This book could be tailored to the language spoken by each student.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
For those who come to take Italian language classes, I highly suggest taking a few cooking classes to heighten your experience of Italian culture.
City/place
The city of Genoa offers a great mix between modern city life and a midevil city.
Quality of teaching / language progress
The cooking course was fabulous! (for perspective, last quarter 2022, I attended a culinary school north of Boston, Massachusetts). Attending cooking classes with Franceso was a joy. He was extremely knowledgeable about cooking and baking. And he openly & clearly shared this knowledge with me. He speaks English very well. He had me perform each aspect of meal preparation. We did not cut any corners. We followed each recipe as written. He was always organized with all the necessary ingredients each day and a typewritten set of recipes that we would follow. I followed fifty recipes with him over the course of four weeks. Each was unique and seemed to taste better than the previously made meal. Another element to my enjoyment of this cooking experience is that Francesco is passionate about what he does. He has been conducting these classes for over ten years!

Very friendly and helpful.
City/place
Beautiful city with a rich history. A wide range of cafes, restaurants and shops. Short distance to other places of interest (eg Cinque Terra, Portofino). Lots of traffic and steep slopes.

The cooking class was really the 'icing on the cake'.

The location is ideal, the people very friendly and helpful. Coffee is also available. All perfect :-)
Other comments
Very good school, very good teachers!
City/place
It is a beautiful city. For the most part, it's also clean. It's just a pity that the beautiful old town smells of urine everywhere. That is unpleasant. Public toilets could help. I had bought a weekly bus ticket. The bus ticket inspectors should be a bit more friendly to the tourists. I was ripped off straight away because I didn't know that a weekly ticket also had to be stamped. 40 euros had to be paid, even though I was practically sitting next to the vending machine.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Grammar should play only a minor role in the beginners' course. Listening, understanding and speaking are much more important. At the beginning of the course there should be a short repetition of the previous day.
Accommodation
The host family is great, I only had good experiences. :-)

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
Friendly welcome, usually motivated teachers. Regularly gave tips on what to do or visit in the city or area.
Other comments
Since our course required at least level A2, it might be better to ask each student which grammar part requires repetition, continue quickly in class and pay more attention to listening and speaking the language. The activities, in particular the city visits, would be better planned in the first days, if not they are not so interesting anymore since you have already been through the city a lot.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Hotel Best Western Metropoli had an excellent location, close to school and city center. Enrolled in school with different expectations: improving my Italian language. For me it was one big repetition and actually I barely improved my language. Repetitions and refreshments are allowed, but in my opinion they should continue faster. The listening and speaking sessions were OK, conversations mostly continued between students, with of course everyone making their own mistakes, which unfortunately were not corrected. Also, the tasks were usually improved mutually between students and often without additional checks by the teacher (if we had both filled in the same thing, would it have been correct?). The 2nd week we were in the classroom with about 8 students and had expected more follow-up from school regarding disturbing and unnecessary cell phone use during lessons, as well as disturbing latecomers, with lesson delay. We had enrolled in course 50+ but given too few candidates there were more young people in the class and in retrospect this was also better.

Make sure to inquire into which group you end up.
Other comments
It bothered me that peers corrected each others work, not the teacher. Then you still don't know if it was correct or not.
City/place
Big city with a lot to discover. Nature is further away.
Quality of teaching / language progress
It is a shame that we did not only have lessons with 50+ students. 18 year olds have different goals when learning Italian. Coming and going (disrespectful and rude) was also annoying. 1 hour late. Teachers, on the other hand, could take stricter measures.

Accommodation
The tenants did not permit lights turned on when necessary, making the hallway pitch black at night. During daytime, it was dark too. They wanted to keep all the doors and windows closed, and the hallway was very dark even during daytime. There is no living room there. The kitchen was sometimes dirty because someone did not wash the dishes they had used after cooking. The shower has drainage problem, and sometimes the tenants did not clean the shower, leaving hair on the floor. Some tenants even cooked at midnight and talked after 1 am in the kitchen. Once they washed clothes at 3 am, disturbing me. On my second night, I heard furniture moving at 4 am, and I was scared because I did not know if the apartment was haunted. The darkness in the apartment was scary. However, the tenants would turn on the lights when they wanted. Once I went out at about midnight to go to the washroom and the hallway lights were on, although no-one was outside. What was uncomfortable was that the tenants would confront you to turn off the lights or they turned them off in front of you. They even asked me to buy garbage bags, but at the beginning I was told that I could use them. I used only a few, but I had to buy some, I just left 8 to 10 clean garbage bags. I used a sponge to clean the sink, and someone took it away. They even wanted me to throw their garbage

I sometimes found the classrooms noisy due to the close proximity of a main road and due to the acoustics of the classrooms as well. It was especially disturbing during the 1-on-1 conversations or listening exercises. Floor covering, as a simple carpet, could be a solution for this.

Insider tips about what future students should not miss
In winter, as there are fewer students at the school, they study in a same class even though they have different language levels. You can't prepare for a class, because there isn't any textbooks. I recommend you to have the basic knowledge in advance to attend the course.
Other comments
My friend who had a course before said that many school activities were organized. However, there weren't any activities in winter.

The staff is very nice. They always had time to talk. However, I chose not to finish the course because the classes were very fast for me and I had difficulty following them. It's all about grammar and that didn't suit me, specially as the book and explanations in class were all in Italian so I felt I couldn't keep up and kept getting it wrong. The school kindly offered me different solutions, such as starting again in a new group, change teachers or get some private lessons. I rejected this as I had already made up my mind but it was very nice of them to offer. Even one of the staff members offered to help me after class. I want to emphasize that it is a great school but if you are a complete beginner it is very hard and it will be better if some of the assignments/instructions were in English. I hope they take this feedback into account. I lost my patience a few times and I am sorry for the teachers.

Response from school
We work with beginner students since 13 years. Not using English language in the classroom is a choice. At school we use “communicative method”, widespread all over the world to teach a language to foreigners. So first of all, we cannot use any different language (neither English) to teach Italian. If the student uses English as inter-language she/he will never be to manage grammar forms or words in the appropriate context.Sometimes receiving an “help” from inexperienced people at home, can get the student confused. If an inexperienced person uses with the student a grammar form which is not part of the student’s program, yet, the student could face something too difficult for her/him. A prepared teacher will introduce difficulties step by step into the program.

Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Visit the Aquarium of Genoa, its lovely streets, climb up (elevator right next to the school) and buy something to remember in one of the antique shops. Cinque terre, Camogli - very picturesque! I recommend!
Other comments
The school apartments occupied an entire floor of a two floor builidng in the square delee Erbe. Clean beautiful apartment with antique furniture, pretty decorations brought from different parts of the world, paintings and old prints. You have a feeling as if you were at your relatives home. It has everything you need. But please note that in the evenings there are a lot of young people in this area, and the Italians stay up until late at night. It didn´t bother us - it was nice to be in the thick of events. When you open the windows, you can liten to the sounds of the city filling up the room while catching bits of conversation and understanding their meaning. When you close the windows it was quite and you can sleep without any problem. The school is no more than 12 minutes on foot.

In my opinion, this school is best for short stays. Courses for longer stays aren't planned as well as they should. This is feedback from students who wanted a structured study plan for long term goals. Mention this to admin if you plan on studying long term. Ask for an individualized study plan up front, but dont reject the school before giving them a chance

There were only 4 groups. Teachers' professional levels are very different. Working in advanced group is boring, too much time is used for listenning without lexical and grammar exercices. There is no strict program for studying, many subjects are initiated and then abandoned. Don't expect a serious studying, it's just a supplement for your staying in Italy

Genova is a great city to study Italian in. The size of the city is perfect, big enough to find new things to see every day but yet small and cozy. The people of Genova are very nice and friendly and I got many oppurtunities to practise my Italian. Because there aren't many tourists in Genova(or at least not non-italian tourists) the pace is calmer, people are not as stressed as in Rome or Florence. They find time to talk to you and encourage you in your speaking. Genova is perfect in the summer since it's by the sea and a beach is never far away. The pesto is also a reason for going there!
