Student opinions about Debla, Malaga

Verified reviews only, uncensored. All student opinions from students who booked a course at the school with LanguageCourse.net.
Liked
The experience overall was exceptional. Teachers were very motivated, friendly and organized. The classes had a good size, around 6-8 students depending on the days. On the first day I found out that with 4 hours (4x50min) of classes, you have 2h of grammar and 2h of conversation. It is a very good split, the teachers adapt very well to the level of the class and keep everyone involved. The school is a bit up the hill about 300m from the sea with fabulous views from the bright classrooms and the terraces. I can definitely recommend Debla.

Quality of teaching / language progress: The DELE exam preparation class that I took focused a lot on speaking and organizing a talk to prepare for the speaking part of the exam. The teachers were very challenging, which was exactly what I needed to make progress with my speaking.

I really like the culture of the school. It's small and friendly, and the teachers do their best to make you feel comfortable and part of the Debla family. The teachers are professional and courteous of everyone - we had a wide mix of cultures, age ranges in our class - and I always felt part of the class and made welcome. The grammar lessons were particularly strong and well structured - although quite challenging - which I liked! The teachers were really kind and funny - and made even difficult lessons great fun!
Disliked
This was my first experience of a language school and I think I had unrealistic expectations of what I could achieve in conversation classes. My grammar was at a higher level than my speaking and I felt that this impeded my learning and my conversation. I would recommend that someone considering a language school, ask questions about how conversation classes are run and how you might expect to improve, so your expectations are realistic.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss I would recommend this experience for anyone who is serious about learning languages - but you get out what you put in - so expect it to be hard work. I would also recommend that you search for an Intercambio (a native speaker that wants to learn English) to practice informal conversations in addition to having lessons at the school. This will help you build your confidence with native speakers. There are lots of websites where you can connect with people (safely) to do this. It's brilliant meeting classmates from all over the world. This is also something that makes the experience fascinating. Finally, think carefully about your accommodation. You might learn more quickly if you are living with a host family versus in student accommodation, where you might be with others that may not be able to communicate in Spanish due to their level.

Quality of teaching / language progress: 4 x 50 min study per day was perfect for me, as I studied for 9 weeks at Debla. There was homework 3-4x per week, which could take you 1-2 hours, depending on your knowledge. It's essential to take the time to do this properly as it supports your work for the following day and reinforces what you have learnt in class. I expected it to be challenging and I would say it was slightly more difficult, and tiring, than I expected. This was primarily because of all the new vocabulary and grammar I was learning.
Other comments Overall a great school with passionate teachers and a good range of activities. I had an excellent 9 weeks at the school.

The teachers were super nice and funny and it was fun to learn! I learned a lot in the 2 weeks and would have liked to have extended the time. The afternoon activities are not organized by the school itself, but by another organization that then offers them to all schools. As a result, the school does not have so many options to control what is on offer. Nevertheless, everything was there, from museums and beach volleyball tournaments to trips to Seville or Granada.

The school's location, learning materials, teachers' preparation for the class, some teachers had a very motivating way of conducting the lessons. The organisation of the excursions with an amazing guide Lorenzo - the information was passed on in an understandable and interesting way. Nice atmosphere at the school.
Disliked
Additional activities inadequate to their price - entry to the Wine Museum costs 15 euros without a guide, where atthe place itself the price was 5 euros for tourists, 3 euros for groups - you could feel cheated. Flamenco classes without music, in a place unsuitable for such activities, interrupted by a long telephone conversation of the teacher - embarrassing. Too many explanations in English - people who did not know it felt lost, some classes lacked tasks integrating and activating the group
Insider tips about what future students should not miss To learn Spanish you need to know English very well... Before departure you should check when the bank holidays fall as the classes do not take place on those dates (it is included in terms and conditions, but it can be missed)

Quality of teaching / language progress: I learned a lot from my super tutors who put a huge amount of energy into helping me learn more about the language of Spain. The course was too advanced for me at this moment so I came home after the first week but as I live in Spain I can work at home to make the best use of my course work. Please thank my tutors. They were super!!!

Very nice people, good ambience, location very nice with good views, but exhausting to walk every day 8 minutes up the hill. You certainly don't want to do that 2x a day if you have deposited something there, since the school is also a bit outside the center.
Disliked
That everything only goes via the Internet such as appointment changes. If you don't look at your phone all the time, you're not informed. Changes to the program or schedule can be announced the day before in class? Regarding the accommodation, I would have expected it to be tested and known by the school - not just by phone. After a change: very good.

The price/quality ratio, the location of the school, the organisation and facilities were very good. The excursion to Seville was very well organised, as was the city tour.
Disliked
I cannot rate the quality of the teaching as very good. The teachers spoke very quickly, so I often didn't understand the tasks and explanations. I was at level A2. The blackboards in the grammar section were not structured, it was written chaotically. I would have liked to see a coloured picture to memorise the word endings or something similar. The language section was okay, with good ideas.

Students change per week, therefore there is a difference in learned material, which causes delays. Many changing teachers, especially in the first week.

Quality of teaching / language progress: It was not clear that the activities did not take place with the class but with several schools. Class is a mix, sometimes also people of 17 or 18. I booked 2 more days of school for 32 euro per day. Remarkable because the 50 plus was above 500 for 2 weeks while there were hardly any large excursions that were included.
Other comments I like the teachers, but sometimes it was a bit messy. Nevertheless, I had a good time, but I needed some time to adjust.

Some of the classrooms are too small and the walls are very thin, so it was sometimes very noisy when a "lively" group was having lessons next door.

Quality of teaching / language progress: Too large a group and too many people who had several weeks of course behind them mixed with complete beginners. Not an optimal solution right away. Didn't like when the course was in the evening, the day was ruined especially if you lived far from the school and had half board with lunch.
Other comments Good but was on a hell of a road up the mountain. If you have heart problems like me, it is very tough.

This is not necessarily a criticism. I realised in a class of Italian, Danish, German and Chinese speaking students how much the Italians (and probably the French) are facilitated in the study of language. This implies a faster possibility of progress, at least at the initial level, than a class like the one I took part in. Very nice to meet and compare, but a very large gap in Spanish comprehension.
