Student opinions about El Aula Azul, San Sebastian

Liked
I was there for 4 weeks and really loved my experience at Aula Azul and would definitely recommend it to others. All the teachers were fantastic and staff were super lovely. Lessons were fun and interesting and covered a range of themed topics, vocabulary, grammar and I learned a lot and got lots of speaking practise in the classes which I liked. I also recommend the private classes too as it's good to work on specific things you need more practise with and get more one on one support and speaking practice. They organised lots of activities; Sidraria in the old town, Queseria visit in the country, pinxos, language exchanges while I was there in August so it was great to meet other students and I met lots of really nice and interesting people from around the world of all ages. I wasn't sure if there would be other 30-somethings there but was presently surprised by how many were there at the same time so that was a nice surprise too. Location was amazing, very central and a couple minutes walk to the main beach. Perfect for an after class dip. They even gave me the opportunity to do an exam in the middle of my course to test my level across different areas and get feedback on the things I could improve which was very helpful.

Liked
I liked the teachers and staff at the school best because they were all very nice and also very competent. I learned an incredible amount during my three weeks at the school, which was mainly due to my teacher, with whom I had a private lesson every day. In general, the teaching methods were very original and animating, and the time flew by. The location was very good, it was only two streets to the beach, so it was easy to go there directly after school or during the lunch break.
Disliked
Unfortunately, the school was not so well booked at the end of September/beginning of October and the groups were very small (usually only 2 people). As a result, there were hardly any social activities and you had little chance to get to know people. This was different at other schools in the town at the same time, but the classes were larger. All but one of the classrooms are underground, so you have neither daylight nor really good air. I wrote an exam there and sat in the basement for 3.5 hours and could hardly concentrate at the end....
Insider tips about what future students should not miss As I said, I can recommend everyone to book at least some private lessons. Otherwise, there is the Intercambio every Tuesday, which is really fun and where you can use what you have learned.

Quality of teaching / language progress: I was very happy to have the one lesson of private tuition per day in addition to my normal course. The teacher there made a lot of effort to adapt the lessons to my individual needs and prepared me well for my exam.

Warm welcome. Teachers are devoted and adapt their courses so that the students can make the most of it. The whole AulaAzul team is very nice. The teachers are creative and very good pedagogue. I loved everything about this school. The students were nice and very motivated to learn, a good group. I improved my accent and my grammar. My sentences are more complete.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss I highly recommend to the students to take part to the evening exchanges. I noticed that the ones who participate to these events used to slightly increase their speaking.

All employees were super friendly, open and helpful. The lessons were great fun and our interests were also asked about. (Level B2) There were various leisure activities such as a language exchange, a tour of the city and a Basque ball game. If something could not take place or you were not satisfied, they offered alternatives.

Loved the teachers and teaching, location of the school was awesome, many classmates also paired their classes with surf in the afternoon and it seemed like an awesome time! Also recommend the private classes, they’re like a conversation that evolves with your level, although they are, of course, pretty tiring for the brain.
Disliked
Not loads of organized activities, but many students suggest activities on a daily basis, you just have to join.

Other comments Overall I had a great two weeks in San Sebastián thanks to the great staff at El Aula Azul who made everyone feel so welcome. The only very minor complaint I had is that some of the classes did not have air conditioning and could get quite hot on some days (although generally in San Sebastián that isn't a problem!). Overall though that didn't ruin my experience at all though and I'd highly recommend the school. Hopefully I'll be back next year!

Other comments There was an error. The school's website said I’d be sent a test before the course started. When I hadn’t received one, I emailed the intermediary at your organisation who replied I would be tested on arrival. I wasn’t. I was given a feedback form by the school on the Tuesday morning and I stated that perhaps, I was in too high a class. Anyway there were only 3 in the class and I felt that one of our 2 teachers needed to make more allowance for me. One of the 2 directors asked to discuss what I’d written on the feedback form. She said she had seen my test result and I was in the correct class but would talk to the teacher. On Wednesday morning, the director was very apologetic. They had not sent me a test. I have accepted compensation from the school which I feel is just but also generous. The full cost of the course is being reimbursed - paying for an extra 1 hour private lesson whilst I was there and there will be 4 Skype lessons. However, I haven’t had any further contact regarding these. I will contact them.

Other comments I think that teachers should be more attentive to older students who have a little more hearing problems; give them more written exercises and reading and especially talk to them slowly in front of them. It was my case. I would have benefited more from my program if the school had acted like this with me. Thank you for the next ones.

Questions and answers about El Aula Azul

  • Unfortunately, the parking space for vans is not really close to school: it would take you some 10/15 minutes to get there by bus and another 10/15 minutes to come back to school, which would leave you without time to walk your dog.
Nevertheless, we are a dog-friendly school, so if the dog is not very big and it is a quiet dog, that will sleep and not bark if you take it to the classroom. We have already had other dogs in the classroom during the lessons.
María Díez García, Management and Bookings from El Aula Azul - Feb 17, 2022
  • Yes, that is possible.
Silvia, Administration from El Aula Azul, San Sebastian - Jun 06, 2023
  • Unfortunately, our accommodation is only for students attending a course, so it is no longer possible to stay in the apartment.
Silvia, Administration and Reservations from El Aula Azul - Aug 07, 2023
  • To travel to Spain from Morocco for a year, you need to obtain a visa, so the first thing we recommend is that you contact the embassy.

One of the requirements to apply for a student visa for Spain from Morocco is to obtain a document accrediting your acceptance into the Aula Azul for a full-time programme leading to a degree or certificate of studies. The programme must have a minimum duration of three months and a minimum of 20 teaching hours per week, as well as accommodation in Spain, which can be in the form of a hotel reservation, a letter of invitation from a private individual, a rental contract or a sworn statement from the owner of the property where the applicant will be staying. This document will also be provided by the school.

Also, San Sebastian is a small city easily navigated on foot or extensive public transport. There are tons of activities for all age groups and everything is super accessible.
Maksym Sterpul, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Oct 31, 2023
  • Of course, you can book the course with the school and arrange hotel accommodation on your own. The school does not book the hotels for you.
