Student opinions about Accademia Italiana, Salerno

Liked
The school had a large number of students of various ages when I was there in October. As a result, there were classes for all levels of Italian, and there were many activities organised by the school in addition to the classes. Teaching was of a high quality. The school organised visits to Pompeii, various parts of the Amalfi Coast and other places of interest both during the week and on Saturdays.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss: Salerno is relatively cheap for eating out by the standards of other Italian cities. It is also a very attractive smaller city. There is a small beach, where you can swim, not far from the school.

The staff, they are all friendly and competent. Teachers (mostly women) are patient and understanding and they seem competent and motivated. Time flies in class (2 hours, break, 1 hour) and there are quite a few social activities in the afternoon. But these activities are enough for a month. If you intend to stay longer, you will finish all the activities.

Quality of teaching / language progress: It is a small school without many levels so, I had to switch class for a more appropriate level. Classrooms are supposed to be for 10 people but they are not comfortable at all for 10 adults plus furniture and books. I would say 6 or 7 the a mire ideal number.
Other comments: It could be refurbished, especially the toilets. Classes can hold up to 10 people but with all the material it is hard to fit 10 people in there. I think they should only place 5 o 6 adults in each class. Chairs and tables need to be changed, and they should paint the walls and change the lights. The decorations seems old. The staff is so nice and so competent that the rest is not that important. The general lounge is a bit empty.

What I liked most about the school: the location, the teachers and the helpful administrative staff
Insider tips about what future students should not miss: For many trips - especially to the Amalfi coast - it is much cheaper and more relaxing to go there on your own by ferry or bus. The schedules of the ferry and bus companies are all online. When you go e.g. to Amalfi on a school-organised trip, you usually go back on an earlier ferry so that you have little time to go swimming or explore the place at your own pace.

Quality of teaching / language progress: The teachers were really good, highly motivated and helpful. I guess they have very concrete instructions what to teach each week as everybody on the same level gets to do a test at the end of every week to checks student's progress. So I can't blame it on the teachers that we focused mainly on grammar. We also made a lot of conversation, but it was mainly random and not centred on a particular topic. In the first week, we mainly practised the correct usage of the verbs 'essere' and 'avere', which is fine, but it would have been more useful to learn everyday survival phrases (e.g. how /what to order in a bar/restaurant, how to give and ask for directions etc.). In general, there was much more focus on grammar than on vocabulary. I would prefer a more topic-/content-focused approach (Content-Integrated-Learning). The activities offered were good, but in my opinion often overpriced, especially the guided walks. The classrooms were very small and it was often difficult to find space for one's books on the table.
Other comments: The teachers are great but the (presumably management-imposed?) focus on grammar rather than on specific topic-centered vocabulary seems a bit outdated to me.
