What we like about the school
  • Games room with a piano for students to use in their free time.
  • Excellent location in the medieval city center of Siena, a Unesco World Heritage Site.
  • Rooftop terrace
How we create the points regarding what we like/dislike about a school

Location: Dante Alighieri is situated in the small medieval Italian city of Siena. The historical centre of Siena has been declared as a UNESCO world heritage site as it has preserved its gothic architecture from the 12th century. From the school, students can reach the core of the old town, Piazza del Campo, in under ten minutes by walking towards the 87m Tower of Mangia, which is difficult to miss as it rises boldly above the streets of the city. Another noteworthy attraction of Siena is the Fortezza Medicea, a fortress for the city’s protection which now provides its visitors with a number of picturesque hiking and walking trails. The fortress is 25 minutes by foot from Dante Alighieri. With such a central location, most of the city's attractions are accessible by foot, but for those who prefer to use public transport, there are bus stops close to the school building. Dante Alighieri is close to the Botanical Garden of the University of Siena and Monastery of St. Augustine in a quiet area of Siena which is perfect for concentrating on learning a language. There are a number of restaurants dotted around the immediate vicinity of the school for those wanting to taste the local Italian cuisine, as well as a supermarket and a cinema nearby.

School facilities: The facilities within the school building include a library, a movie room with rentals available, a games room, a rooftop terrace and a piano in the recreation room.

Teaching Style: The methodology used within the classroom follows a didactic approach to learning. This style of teaching focuses on the basic norms of the language and presents this information to the students in an organised and almost scientific manner. This is introduced to the student through interactive activities and a general format of teaching-learning-evaluating in order to address any misconceptions the student may have and to see where their strengths lie.

Course structure: Dante Alighieri has some interesting courses alongside the general language courses including language and music, language and cooking classes, 50+ programme, a pre professional internship and a PLIDA exam preparation course. Siena Magnifica is a course that combines both the Italian language and culture and includes 4 cultural lessons per week: 2 cooking lessons, 1 wine tasting and 1 excursion per 2 weeks programme. It is possible to book this course for up to 4 weeks and gives students the opportunity to learn more about Siena whilst getting to grips with the Italian language. All the teachers are highly trained and create a professional and encouraging learning atmosphere within the classrooms.
  • The language school Learning Italy - Dante Alighieri was founded in Siena, Italy in 1979.
  • Legal name / parent company: Sienalingue S.r.l

The setting of the school in the old town and the warm and friendly staff. Friends said that the cooking and singing classes are really worth while if you are interested in cooking or singing.

I would have liked to have cheaper access to the internet and one or two computers more (the school has got two)

Other comments The school puts students together in one flat who are about the same age. Who is 33 is not likely to share an apartment with people who are 17. I liked that. If you are not used to the Italian standard of living you might find the school and the apartments a bit wacky.

Other comments I think Dante Alighieri offers a good mixture of grammar and conversation. I liked that we had not just one teacher but two different ones. In addition to that I enjoyed the fact that in my course the have been seven students and each one came from a different country. Moreover, the teachers are very kind and the lessons are good.

Insufficient activities and excursions. Perhaps this was due to the time of year, as there were not a large number of students, but also to the city of Siena itself, which is very attractive and does not require any specific school activities.

Other comments When you make a reservation tell the school that you want to stay in the center of Siena. Most families are outside the city, so you have to take the bus to get to Siena, and there aren`t a lot of buses and they are never punctual!!!! If you can manage to make your holiday in July or August don`t miss the Palio!!!!

Other comments The teachers are lovely. Thanks to them for their patience and friendlyness. The ladies at the reception of the school were very helpful and didn't hesitate to make a telephone call for me for a reservation at the Uffizi in Firenze or elsewehere. An information about the internet point : if you have a lap-top, take it with you, because you will have much less problems in treating with your e-mails. The internet point at the school is really to improve! In a two-weeks stage I have met many people of many different countries. This was a real enrichment for me. If I had the oportunity to return to the school in Siena, I would take it at once.

Other comments I was there during Easter and I would have liked more social arrangements from the school's side. It would have been better if the school could arrange more social get togethers like concerts, dancing and other cultural events.

Couldn't give me an answer as to where I would stay as it was important to me and the website states only 9min away (even after asking on email beforehand). They do have accom very close but when this is all booked out, they turn to places which are much further away. I booked and then found out it was over 30min walk away which I can't do due an old injury. Had to cancel and found other accom much closer but was still charged an "accomodation admin fee".

Would have liked a little more feedback on pronunciation. Also nice if you have several course participants. A bit more choice in the afternoon would have been nice as Siena is not very big.
