Students can take the Standard course and do an internship at the end of the course to get to practice all that they've learnt and get valuable work experience.
This course is for students of maximum 26 years old. Students need to take a course of at least 6 weeks and need to achieve a minimum level of B1.
Internships are unpaid and can last from 3 to 6 months.
Course Description
- Improve your German language skills during this 6+ week course.
- Teachers will help you prepare your application materials and job interview.
- Depending on the area of expertise, proof of language level B1, B2, C1 or higher is required.
- Collect your first professional experience and establish contacts with a German enterprise.
- You will get the chance to experience everyday professional life in Germany.
Program Length
The shortest German course is 6 weeks and depends largely on your language level. The internship typically lasts up to 3 months. Longer internships are only arranged if they are considered compulsory.
Area of Work
You can indicate which area of work you would prefer. Certainly, your placement will depend heavily on your qualifications. Placement in a qualified internship in fields such as architecture, accounting, design or tourism require very good German skills (completion of level B2). If you would like to work in the hotel or restaurant industry, completion of level B1 is generally sufficient.
The school will try to find a placement for you that matches both your experience and your interests. This is not always possible in every course location, however. In addition, DID cannot guarantee you will find a position with a specific firm or in a very specific business sector. In these cases, they will suggest an alternative, perhaps an internship in a similar line of work.
Internship Payment
All internships offered are unpaid. Nonetheless, some firms may pay a small amount of pocket money. DID cannot mediate paid internships for you. Minimum wage laws apply to internships that are not considered compulsory. In the case of volunteer internships, minimum wage laws only apply if the internship is longer than 3 months.
Additional Information - Job interview
In Germany, it is standard to take part in an in-person job interview. The employer will contact you to arrange an appointment. You will leave a more positive impression if you respond to their request promptly, arrive at the interview on time, and are neatly dressed in the appropriate attire.
- Work hours and vacation
In Germany, the normal work week is 40 hours. Your employer will explain the work hours to you either before your internship or when you first start. If you would like to take vacation during your internship, discuss this with your employer.
- Termination
Should the internship be terminated early, DID cannot refund any fees you have paid to them. Please let them know why you would like to end the internship early.
- Internship certification
After you have successfully completed your internship, your employer will provide you with a written certification of your work. The certification will describe the duties you performed while employed.
- Health, accident and liability insurance
Some employers will require proof of insurance. If you do not have adequate insurance coverage, you can purchase it through the school's insurance partner.

You will feel right at home and enjoy an authentic German experience during your language course in Berlin by staying with a host family. Staying with a family gives you the opportunity to get to know the culture from the locals' perspective and to practice your new German language skills and knowledge outside of class.
Hosts
The hosts are families and individuals that enjoy getting to know people from all over the world. DID staff takes special care when choosing individuals and host families to ensure a friendly and open atmosphere and one in which German can be spoken. Hosts may be single individuals or couples, with or without children, employed full-time or already in retirement so they have more time for you. The school visits hosts regularly and many have had years of experience taking in students.
Hosts live in different parts of the city. To get to school, you will usually need to take public transportation. The host will gladly explain the best way to travel but can't usually accompany you to school. Typically, the trip takes 25 - 45 minutes. Approximately 2-4 weeks before arrival you will receive a host family profile with contact and other important information.
Rooms
As a rule, guest rooms have a place to sleep (bed, sometimes sofa-bed), a place to store clothing and usually a desk and chair. Many hosts also provide a television or other extra ammenities for you to use.
Rooms are cleaned weekly. Keep your room picked up so your host can clean more easily.
You will receive fresh bed linens and towels regularly.
House Rules
Hosts will share their house rules with you so you will understand their expectations. In some homes, for example, there may be certain rooms you are not allowed to enter. In most cases you will receive a key so you can come and go independently. Be especially careful, because you will bear the cost of replacement should you lose your key.
Respect Germany's quiet hours (for example, no loud music in your room after 22:00). In Germany, quiet hours are particularly valued. If you are still a minor, certain youth protection rules pertain as well. There are strict rules governing when you must be home.
If you would like to invite friends over, you must ask your hosts ahead of time for permission.
