Academic English will help you improve your English language skills to prepare you for study success at university. This course provides you with opportunities to develop your independent learning strategies and individual needs in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
This course has 4 levels: EAP Intro, EAP1, EAP 2, EAP3. Each level has two sessions of lessons every day as per below:
EAP Intro: Academic English (session 1) + IELTS or university study skills (session 2)
EAP1: Academic English (session 1) + IELTS or university preparation skills (session 2)
EAP 2: Academic English (session 1) + IELTS or university preparation skills (session 2)
EAP3: Academic English (session 1) + IELTS or university preparation skills (session 2)
If you wish to improve your IELTS band scores, you may choose:
- Academic English (session 1) + IELTS (session 2)
- Take an IELTS test upon completion of the course at ELA's official IELTS Test Centre.

The course focuses on the development of communication skills with a balance of speaking, listening, reading, and writing tasks. You will learn through class activities, individual, pair, and small group work.
General English includes elective classes that allow you to tailor your course to meet your learning goals, as you can choose an elective class to focus on a particular subject or skill. The elective classes are dependent on the level and student demand.

- The English for IELTS elective focuses on language development, with competence in the four key IELTS test areas (writing, speaking, listening, and reading) developed during the course. This elective also builds awareness of the IELTS test format and provides practical exam skills and strategies.
- The Business English elective teaches a range of business communication skills, with a focus on practical language. Every few weeks the Business English class will take part in a project involving real-life business skills such as advertising, marketing, presenting, selling a product and writing a report.
- The Communication Skills elective focuses on developing functional listening, speaking and writing skills, covering the themes ‘Social and Travel’ and ‘Work and Study’. There are often projects connected to the themes and language from the course books.

Overview
English for Specific Academic Purposes (Engineering) is a 2 week online course. It is intended for learners of English who study Engineering at university and who want to develop their English skills for doing project work in groups, writing up reports and presenting the results of projects.
The aim of this course is to develop students’ knowledge of language for interacting with others in group work, the genres of project reports and presentations. The course also seeks to extend students’ language skills in order to improve the accuracy of their writing and speaking.
Classes will include:
- A wide range of online/offline learning interactions; discussion forums, pair and group work in ‘breakout rooms’, and shared document collaboration in small classes.
- Individualised tutoring and feedback on progress at different points of the course with easy access to virtual academic counselling by appointment.
- Modern and quality tested study platforms via Zoom and Canvas (our learning management system) to ensure a fully integrated learning experience.
- Insights into project management with guest speaker Professor Garry Miller from the Faculty of Engineering
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course students will be able to: - Use formulaic expressions for participating in a group project.
- Write an appropriately structured report for an engineering project.
- Deliver a clear group presentation about a project they have completed.
- Use a sufficient range of grammatical and lexical structures with a relatively high degree of control and accuracy in an individual presentation (i.e. to a minimum B1/ level of proficiency).
