  • On campus accommodation very close to school
What we dislike about the school
  • Lessons are 45 minutes long, which is shorter than in other schools.

St. Julians is a small resort town in Malta, 30 minutes by public transport from Valletta, the capital of the island. St. Julians has good transport connections to most main cities in Malta, making it a great base for travelling around during your stay. Within the city there is plenty on offer, including a number of bays for enjoying the Mediterranean sun. Spinola Bay is the pivotal point of the city, and Gateway School of English, their well-established English language school, is a 12-minute walk from this vibrant location. The school is tucked away in a peaceful area of St. Julians, but is only a small walk to reach the main road where there is a regular bus connection to all parts of the city. It is recommended to buy a 7-Day Explore Card, which allows you to jump on and off the bus for a week as often as you want throughout Malta and Gozo, the next island.

The school offers a number of interesting courses, including in areas such as business, a wide selection of exam courses, teacher training courses, conversational English, and specialist courses focused on sports, cultural activities and history. The staff at Gateway school of English are both qualified and experienced in teaching English as a second language and are all native speakers, without exception. The classrooms come with all the latest equipment, with interactive whiteboards and audio visual facilities to deliver the digital course material in a comfortable environment. This standard is reflected throughout the school, with a well-stocked library and a self-study area with ultra-modern computer facilities.

Age range for Young Learners. Good option for young kids who want to start English lessons to avoid classes with teenagers. Most schools offer wider age range which is not beneficial for younger kinds. Our son who was reluctant to start learning English was encouraged to speak and now he is eager to continue classes back at home.

I did not like the conversation classes that one of the lecturers taught. As a result, some students did not participate in the classes because they were not interesting.

The location of the school is very nice! Activities are offered.
Disliked
School was overbooked, which meant that students who arrived last could not attend classes. Classrooms completely overcrowded . This explains the cheap price. The coffee machine was constantly broken and there was no possibility to buy other drinks or snacks. Toilets dirty and school generally not very clean. Poor organisation.

Staff is very kind, caring and helpful.
Insider tip: There was no kitchen/kitchen facilities in the residence besides a fridge so it was not easy to make a dinner. Canteen has very nice food! You have to go to the office and request the trips as they are quite often not well promoted. In the end they end up not happening because they don't have the minimum amount of people. Apart from that, language assessments should involve speaking too, as it caused some problems if they are good in grammar but they are not able to speak.

The teacher was not a native speaker. The school management was quite uncompromising. We as students had to be willing to compromise and accept cutbacks.
Review details
Quality of teaching / language progress: not suitable for 10 to 11 year olds
Other comments Not booked what suited us. But the school management was not willing to compromise and was unyielding. Paid too much money for what was (not) offered.
