What we like about the school
  • Small class sizes
  • Rooftop terrace
What we dislike about the school
  • An older average age per class than in other schools in the same city.

Location: The school is situated in the centre of Athens, in a student area, next to the Park of Pedion Areos, the Athens University of Economics and Business, the Victoria Square and the Exarchia Square, a lively “anarchist” square, full of cafeterias, bars, and taverns.

Getting around: The Biktoria station is a 2-minute walk away from the school building. This subway station has the M1 line running through it, which goes through the centre of the city and down to the coast. The central train station in Athens is 20 minutes by foot from Hellenic Language School Alexander the Great, making transportation in and out of the city easily accessible.

Visiting the sights in Athens: The majority of the central features of Athens are all within a 40-minute walking radius of the school and easily reachable by the transportation options nearby. The centre of the city, which is home to attractions including the Acropolis of Athens, Parthenon and Ancient Agora of Athens, is a 40 minute walk from the school. Another option would be 15 minutes via the subway service. The National Archaeological Museum is just down the road from the school.

Greek language courses: The school has a variety of general Greek courses for individual students or for students wanting to join group classes. There is a business Greek course for those looking to further their career by learning the Greek language in their specific field. A teacher training course is also available on specific dates throughout the year.

Cultural courses: Hellenic Language School Alexander the Great has a large number of topics that students can learn about the history and culture of the country whilst also improving their knowledge of the Greek language.

School chain: Hellenic Language Schools are part of the Life Long Training Center 4E Education and training group. They currently have several schools in Greece, including on the Greek island of Crete. For over 45 years, the Hellenic Language Schools have been teaching Greek Language and Culture to non-natives.

Giacomo 5.0
"I feel I improved my knowledge of the language even though I'm aware that two weeks is just the minimum. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford a longer period for the time being."
Emmanuel 5.0
"The general Greek program was really interesting and good, and intensive enough. "
Special note for 2025 holiday season: If you plan to take a course during the high season months of April, June, July or August 2025 we urgently advise you to book as early as possible. The staff is very friendly and answer all questions. The extra-linguistic program was interesting (the manager is an excellent historian, and can explain a lot ..). Nice Christmas Party with delicious pastries and wine .. Especially I liked the dance class, two times! The lessons (I had two teachers, individual and group lessons) depend a lot on the person. The group lessons were very teacher- and frontal orientated. The use of different media and playful interactive approaches (also between the participants) are hardly available. But that seems to be a general problem in Greece ...
Insider tip: Be sure to join the extra program! In Athens itself, Niarchos Center is an architectural highlight, the Kykladishe Museum, small but magnificent archaic sculptures! For jazz fans: Half Note Jazz Club! Cultural program (dance, music, exhibitions): Onassis cultural center! The Musical Instruments Museum, with ancient instruments and music examples/videos regarding the music history on mainland and islands.
Details of the review
Other comments See above. The lessons could be more "easy-going". The teachers are, especially in one-to-one lessons, open-minded, if you suggest something. So encourage future participants to voice their opinions, suggestions or criticisms on site! The more students do that, the more likely it is that something will change.

It is all super organized and the atmosphere is extremely friendly. They also try to get the students in contact with each other. It was also great that in the first week only 2 students were in the class, and in the second week 3 students. The two teachers we had were very dedicated and really professional.

Other comments You can join completely relaxed, everyone is nice, everything regulates itself. Nevertheless, you learn a lot and the class is really demanding.

I was only there for 3 days, I had very good private lessons, 3 hours every day for 3 consecutive days, they systematically deepened the grammar, which has brought me a big leap forward. Friday was a poetry event, all students read a poem, was also stimulating.
Insider tip: You should certainly go to school longer. I go weekly in Switzerland in each case a double lesson, so a targeted deepening is also useful, even if it is only a week.

Other comments nice and smart director, good teachers, in Athens you can of course see and do a lot; am sure if you go to school there longer you can benefit a lot more.

The quality of the teaching; the teachers were excellent, they also offered a lot of extra activities like visits to museums, lectures on Greek history, everyday life, invitations to tavernas every second week; excellent teaching material etc.

Other comments All the members of the staff were very helpful, friendly and could be contacted any time. I think if you want to participate in the lectures you can really learn a lot. I can highly recommend this school and the teachers. You also had the possibility to write a test at the end according to the European language levels.

Very solid with a caring director and secretary. Also teachers who gave the best of themselves. The afternoon conversation was also very instructive to learn simple Greek and to support each other.
Insider tip: Beautiful museums, including the lesser known, such as folk instruments and ancient technology. Also a lot of ordinary monuments. Trips to Sounion and the sea (Portarafti) are worthwhile.

Quality of teaching / language progress: Good functioning of director and management. Excellent teacher, but a little too little attention to the auditory (my weak point) and too many difficult texts with lots of words to look up.
Other comments No.

Friendly and approachable director and secretary. Demanding but good teacher, who spoke perfect English (C2 level), so we could solve Greek problems easily.
Disliked
Still no results or diploma more than 3 days after leaving school. However, I had been promised an ad hoc e-mail by the headmaster for today (Monday). The first day of lessons also went wrong because of an error by the secretary, for which I think the headmaster is at least politically responsible. Problems with organisation last year too.
Insider tip: Sounio, Egina, Loukabittos hill (sunset), interesting districts like Piraeus, Kefisia, easily accessible by metro, and swimming in Kallimaki or Petro Rafti (a bit of searching by public transport).
Details of the review
Quality of teaching / language progress: Good programme, very informative, tailored to the student. Too few extra activities (only 1 lecture on 200 years of Greek independence and 1 dinner on the last evening).
Other comments Limitations seen in Corona over the last 2 years. Organisation sometimes leaves much to be desired (see other comments).

Questions and answers about Hellenic Language School Alexander the Great

I would like to book the Read and Write Greek - Crash Course. Will I be alone in the course?
This course can stand either as an individual session or as a group course if there are any other participants - or group bookings.
Given that there is no start date and a student can start anytime they want to it is very difficult to coincidentally be in a group. Like in this case.
The hours remain the same (6 lessons) with no reduction.

When exactly does the Read and Write - Crash Course take place?
The final programme is always scheduled Thursday or Friday before the start of the programme to all of our students. 6h tuition is preferably splitted to 2 or 3 days to absorb everything better.
Irini Chryssikopoulou, Contact Manager from Hellenic Language School Alexander the Great - Jan 22, 2025
What language is mainly spoken during classes?
All lessons are in Greek. We use English only as an aid for beginning students during their first 2-3 lessons. We have students from all over the world and we assume that no one speaks a specific language.
Irini Chryssikopoulou, Communication Officer from School of Greek Language & Culture “Alexander the Great" - Mar 01, 2023
Does the language school work with a desktop or is it more convenient to bring your own laptop or tablet?
She can bring her own device. We have a CD-ROM, which can also be installed in a device if the student would like.
