Course structure: Hellenic Language School Alexander the Great offers both private and group courses for the students to learn the day to day use of the Greek language. The group classes come in a variety of lengths to accommodate the different schedules students may want during their stay. They have a specific course for those wanting to focus on reading and writing Greek.

Cultural courses: Greece has a fascinating history and a rich cultural heritage, and Hellenic Language School Alexander the Great has created courses that intertwine these elements into learning Greek.

School facilities: Along with the classrooms for learning, the school has a computer lab, a spacious kitchen with a fridge and facilities to make coffee.

School chain: Hellenic Language Schools are part of the Life Long Training Center 4E Education and training group. My teacher Eleni was wonderful, very personable, taught me everything well, she also speaks great German, the chemistry was right and I even happened to have private lessons because there were few students at the time and we all had different levels. All the other teachers and the teacher Effie are also very nice. The other students too. I felt very comfortable there! The week went by far too quickly. Now I just have to put what I've learnt into practice...

Nice competent teacher Maria, coffee/tea with sweets well taken care of, enthusiastic team, huge amount of information on Greek language. Especially a lot of grammar. And the pace was high. Private lesson because there was only 1 other student. Classroom atmosphere was good. Instructive homework.
Disliked
Discussion point with team after week of classes paid for 40 hours of lessons. According to school academic class schedule of 50 minutes. First week from 9am to 12.30pm and second week 9am to 1.30pm with 10-minute break. Friday 14 April 2023 turned out to be no class. This could have been more clearly confirmed by the school. There were no additional afternoon activities and excursions. On the Wednesday 12 April 2023 to informed tomorrow is my last day then had lunch with other groups which was fine. Museum was mock 3D half-hour film with 15 minutes of that on Greek history. I had lunch and dinner on my own for a fortnight. It was a pity that doing a lot of things in a group was not possible. This meant that speaking Greek remained underexposed. Furthermore, the classroom was not cleaned once in two weeks.

Other comments Learned a lot but not yet able to put into practice what I learnt in terms of speaking. Reading progressed well though.

Evi is great. She took great care of everything. Very helpful, benevolent and extremely nice. Also Maria my teacher. What surprised me is that no afternoon program could be offered although this is included in the contribution. So I didn't have the number of hours advertised in advance.

I liked how friendly and accommodating Effi and Eleni (apologies for misspellings) were. I liked Eleni's style of teaching - friendly yet focused. I like that this school exists! I really appreciated Effi's trip that she arranged to the Museum of Typology and how personable she was.
Insider tip: It's not necessary to book private lessons. Even if there are not other students, you can still book the class lessons and they will accommodate to you. It's cheaper.
Review details
Other comments 2 pieces of constructive feedback: 1) on the first day, outline to the student what you are going to focus on over the whole course (however long it is). This way, it is easier for the student to place what they are learning in a larger context. 2) get a textbook that has instructions in English, at least for the earlier levels. It is very difficult for me to complete the lessons without help from a Greek speaker.

The teachers are all very friendly and accommodating, there are always cookies and snacks available during break and you can always get a coffee or water. There is air conditioning in every room and the teaching is competent and well thought out.
Disliked
I didn't really like the book that was used there, it's not structured strictly and is often incomprehensible, the instructions are only in Greek and there are no solutions at the back of the book. This makes the book not suitable for working alone at home, which I thought was a shame. I didn't take it home with me because it is very thick and heavy. On the other hand, the vocabulary list at the back of the book is very good. Otherwise I have nothing to complain about!

The teachers and the principal are very warm and know how to put people at ease. The two teachers are very competent and very invested in their work. The discussions were very rich and I made good progress.
Disliked
Because of the health situation, I found myself the only student the second week and even if the private lesson went very well I regretted not being in contact with other students. In addition there was no activity and the proposals on the site had played in my choice for this school.
Review details
Quality of teaching / language progress: complete but I regretted that there were not in the margin of the lessons authentic documents, adapted of course, like rhymes, small poems, advertisements, cooking recipes, etc. The examples are too often disconnected from a context which makes it possible to understand the overall meaning.

Enthusiastic teacher, but a lot of focus on grammar. Not much speech or culture.
Disliked
Too poorly lit, too loud. We had the door open because it was so hot, but there were motorbikes and noisy traffic outside so we didn't always hear what we were saying. No air conditioning so lucky it was early summer. Would not recommend anyone to study later in June-July-August.
Insider tip: Think in advance if there is an activity you would like to do in your free time. The school/Effie can help book you in. For example, I didn't know she could arrange dance lessons (Greek dance). Too bad, because I would have liked to go to that. None of this is included in the school's offer, you have to pay extra for it.

Quality of teaching / language progress: No testing was done initially. We were few students and were divided into two groups.

At the same time, private lessons also have disadvantages. It is very demanding and I would have preferred to have classmates to practise with and to do something outside the lessons. It would be advisable if the teachers would bring the different students into contact with each other, without any obligations. Fortunately, I did meet a fellow student, but that was entirely my own initiative.

A little more modernity would be a small improvement. Due to the large number of different participating countries, a lot has to be explained in English, so that you often speak English yourself rather than trying to say it in Greek. Of course, everyone is responsible for themselves.

FAQ about Hellenic Language School Alexander the Great, Chania (Crete)

  • I normally highly recommend a host family, but schools in Greece actually hardly offer this option. You can look into living with a teacher and taking classes, but that comes with another price tag: Influent.

If you would like to take lessons at a local school in Crete, I recommend booking a course at Hellenic Language School Alexander the Great, combined with hotel accommodation. You can book the accommodation through the school, or book it yourself.
