Location: Adelaide is a cosmopolitan city to the South of Australia and is 16% more affordable than other larger cities in the country. The city centre has an interesting structure with a grid system of streets at its core whilst the outer shell is made up of parks and vegetation. IELI - Intensive English Language Institute - rests on the outskirts of the city in Sturt Precinct, connected to Flinders University.
Public transportation: There is a well connected bus station a few minutes from the entrance, which will get you to the centre of the city in under an hour where you can find the cities key attractions including Adelaide Zoo and Adelaide market. The school is close to the beach town of Brighton to the west of the city, with easy transport links to visit after class.
Course structure: IELI has a wonderful selection of courses available; a general English course available in either a full time or part time structure, OET exam preparation as well as a package course of private lessons. The courses follow a clear structure, which is divided into two areas with the same amount of time dedicated to both; reading and writing is one, whilst the other is listening and communicating. There is also a chance for students to practise their knowledge after class in specific areas, the key one being pronunciation. The after class lessons are free of charge and available for all levels in any course.
Social activities: The afternoon classes at IELI often include students from the local University attending, to help with the practise of the language and to interact with the students from the school on a social level. IELI has been running for 25 years and prides itself on creating a community for students away from home. 90% of the students that attend the school are between 18 and 35 years of age and the school introduced a culture club for activities outside the classroom. The culture club takes place on Friday after class as well as over the weekend so that students connect with others in the school to feel included as well as enjoy the sights of Adelaide either for free or below the cost price of entry.
University programmes: The school runs a popular English for Academic Preparation Course. This is designed for those wanting to enter into a Australian University and on average the course is completed in 10 weeks. The content is structured in a similar way to the other courses but with a strong emphasis on how to use this learning in a University environment. The remainder of the lessons specialise in key areas that students will experience whilst at University and help teach them skills to do this successfully such as essay structure, paraphrasing, referencing, note-taking, research skills, presentation language, and academic vocabulary. The course finishes with an exam and end of level assignments to ensure completion is of a high standard.
