It is 15 minutes by bus from the school to these attractions. ISI is in the Nakagyo Ward, a central district in Kyoto, which is home to a number of key features of the city. This includes the Nishiki Market, which is 30 minutes by public transportation from ISI.

Local attractions: Nij? Castle is situated in Nakagyo Ward and is a 12-minute bus ride from the school, or a 20-minute walk. The rest of the attractions are in other areas of the city. The Fushimi Inari Taisha is 45 minutes by train from ISI, whilst the Bamboo Forest is a 25-minute bus ride.

Course structure: There are long term and short term Japanese courses at ISI. These courses are structured around the need for a visa or not. Private lessons in Japanese are taught at the school.

Social activities: ISI has after class sessions to educate students in furthering their career in Japanese. There are guidance sessions for careers and for business as well as a Ritsumeikan University Information Session. Cultural activities include zen meditation experience, maiko experience and Japanese Kite Making session.

Student opinions about ISI Language School, Kyoto

Verified reviews only, uncensored. All student opinions from students who booked a course at the school with LanguageCourse.net.
Liked
I really liked the overall vibe. Most of the students love Japan and are taking these classes because they genuinely want to learn Japanese. The teachers I had were all enthusiastic which is always encouraging.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss I enjoyed this school the most. Be ready to study a lot and also take time to explore Japan and try out cultural activities! The school doesn't organise many of these but it's easy to find lots of activities to do by yourself.

Quality of teaching / language progress: I am very happy I chose this school. I took one month with the start of year in April. After one month my speaking, listening, reading and oral comprehension have all already remarkably improved. My class was a beginner one and had a fast paced rhythm. We were studying with Minna no Nihongo and have covered almost half the book in 4 weeks. You are expected to be an enthusiastic student as there is homework and tests every day as well as a lot of in-class participation. My class had four different teachers with each a slightly different approach, which allow for a slightly different pace every day. They follow a pre-made classes calendar so each one picks off where the last one finished. I personally liked this a lot. All of them seem to love their job and the classes always have a studious yet happy mood. I will most probably return to this school if I decide to come back for a full year studying.

Quality of teaching / language progress: I already had some previous knowledge, but was still classified as a beginner, which was also correct. The pace of teaching is very fast. It is not recommended to start the course without previous knowledge, as you will learn new grammar, vocabulary and Kanji every day. You should at least be able to read and write hiragana and katakana fluently.

FAQ about ISI Language School, Kyoto

  • The school offers courses from total beginner to advanced levels, so you can enrol in ISI without any Japanese knowledge. However, the lessons are taught in Japanese by Japanese teachers (of course using easy Japanese to make sure students can follow), so you will find the course challenging during the first couple of months until you gets used to it. It would help a lot if you studied the alphabet in advance.

  • We issue ERFS for those who sign up for 4 or more weeks.

  • If the student wants to join our school for 3 months, it would be SHORT-TERM course.

This means, the client should arrange the visa, (tourist visa for instance) to enter Japan and join our school.

We don’t support any visa other than a student visa (to study more than 6 months).

  • There are furnished houses for rent in various cities in Japan. The difference between a guesthouse and an ordinary house for shared use is that a guesthouse has 60 to 90 rooms. All rooms are designed for single occupancy. Kitchen, bathrooms and laundry facilities are shared, and you have to cook for yourself.
