At the Islington Centre for English (ICE), London one of the most popular ways to improve your English language skills is to enrol on a General English course. By choosing to study on our General English course in the afternoons, you will have time to explore London and practice what you have learnt in your free time. The afternoon English course is also cheaper! Choose to study for 2-5 days a week between Monday and Friday.
Grammar and vocabulary are the building blocks of successful English language learning and as part of your course, you will receive extensive practice in the essential skills of listening, reading, writing and, most important of all, speaking.
Learning works best if it is enjoyable so our teachers will encourage you join in and include fun language games and videos as part of the course. All our teachers are native speakers so you get to hear real English from someone who heard English spoken to them from the day they were born!
We want to increase your confidence so you can take advantage of your new English language skills, whether in preparation for more advanced courses and English exams (for example IELTS or Cambridge First), in your career or just to improve your general English when speaking with your friends or other people.
You will receive regular tests to monitor your progress and at the end of the course, students receive an ICE certificate of study.
There are six main levels of general language tuition. During enrolment, students take a test to find which class suits them best. These are:
Beginner
Elementary
Pre-Intermediate
Intermediate
Upper-Intermediate

The Cambridge Advanced Exam Course (CAE) is an internationally recognized exam, run at the Islington Centre for English (ICE), London throughout the year.
The CAE exam is a more in-depth version of the First Certificate exam. With the CAE course on your CV or University application you will have an excellent advantage over other overseas students or employment candidates. The Advanced Exam is accepted by the UKBA as suitable for Tier 4 General Student Visas (as well as by Australian immigration) and the majority of UK Universities now accept it in place of an IELTS exam. Students also find that working towards an exam, in a competitive environment, motivates them to succeed and gain the best results they can.
In each class students study the grammar, language skills & exam techniques required to be a successful candidate in the Cambridge Advanced Exam. The exam consists of 5 papers: Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening and ‘Use of English’ paper. Each of these is extensively rehearsed in each lesson.
As this is an advanced course you will need to be C1 level and above to join. Running every morning from 9.15-12.00 pm, Monday to Friday and including 5 afternoon lessons of Advanced General English (with 25 hours of teaching time). All teachers are native English speakers and are highly experienced in taking students through the Cambridge exam process. They will discuss your progress with you as you go through the course and advise you when you are ready to take the exam. The Cambridge Advanced exams are held in December, March and June of each year.
CAE exam enrolment itself will be taken care of by the college and students will pay the exam enrolment fee of £163 (paper based exam) or £163 (computer based), plus a £15 registration fee.
This course will leave you plenty of free time to take an afternoon job or explore London.
