School facilities: Istituto II David has over 35 years of experience in teaching Italian as a foreign language. The intensive course consists of 6 hours per day (30 hours per week) and is divided into two hours of grammar, two hours of main conversation and two afternoon hours that are a mix of readings, writing, listening activities, applied grammar and conversation related to daily situations through role-plays and games, enhancing the students’ vocabulary and their communication skills. This is the school’s most popular and in-demand course, with 20 hours of classes per week in which the student is placed in a group that corresponds to their current level of knowledge. Accommodations are very comfortable and host families are always very friendly and helpful. The time of meals is arranged between the student and the host family. In case the student can not use this service, the family will prepare a pack lunch.

Since it is the host family who does all the housework, this is the best solution for those students, who want to have the most comfortable stay. It is also the best way to improve your Italian as the language is spoken everyday with the host family. You also have the opportunity to learn Italian families’ culture and habits.

"Unfortunately, the stay with the host family was different than expected. We saw each other at mealtimes, otherwise the door was locked, the host family was friendly but lacked warmth, I felt like a number, 'the next guest/student' was already on the way. Breakfast consisted of biscuits and packaged croissants and sips of coffee, very minimalist even by Italian standards. Luckily there was another student there, otherwise I would have been a bit unhappy. But so we could laugh about it all and have a delicious breakfast somewhere in a bar. Dinner was a little better, but also rather basic for a country known for good food. I personally would prefer to book a hotel next time, then I know what to expect."

"The accommodation was a bit further away than expected. Otherwise reasonably equipped. A fan is provided for high temperatures, but it is of little use in these temperatures. The surroundings were also very noisy. The kitchen equipment was great, although you had to learn how to use the oven first. Self-catering is easy to manage here."

“Simply great teachers. I spent 12 weeks at the school and had the chance to learn with 3 different teachers. They were all excellent, attentive and really cared that we’d do well. The teachers and the rest of the staff were also very happy to asnswer any question and assist with any need - educational or other. During my stay students mix was also very good.”

Insider tips about what future students should not miss If you are into art and history, I strongly recommend you find a good podcast to help you better navigate in Florence. I personally listened to Dr. Rocky Ruggiero’s “rebuilding the renaissance”. It was great. Very knowledgeable and funny. Because it’s about a period (the renaissance) and not about Florence, you need to spend some time finding the relevant episodes, but it’s more than worth the trouble.

Quality of teaching / language progress: The standard course was perfect to learn Italian and still explore Florence and Tuscany in the afternoons. I really enjoyed my course.

Other comments The teachers were so enthusiastic and patient as well as encouraging. Their lessons were interesting and engaging. I would love to go back!

Other comments I found the placement test very daunting. 1 hour sitting in a room without air-conditioning and the person was extremely unfriendly. The first day could be made more inviting and better.
