Special note for 2025 holiday season: If you plan to take a course during the high season months of April, June, July or August 2025 we urgently advise you to book as early as possible. In 2024 many schools were fully booked during the holidays, and the situation is unlikely to be different for 2025 due to a current shortage of teachers, which affects most schools.

I enjoyed a lot my five weeks in Kästner Kolleg. I actually could improve my German language thanks the special attention from the staff and teachers as well. It was fantastic my interaction with my classmates from many countries around the world. I could feel that students have a good atmosphere to learn and have fun.

Student support was excellent. There is a friendly, supportive atmosphere. The staff, administrative and teaching, showed flexibility and responsiveness to make the learning experience as successful as possible. Both Katrin and Patricia are excellent teachers.
Disliked
The physical facilities are okay, but a bit 'down at heels.' Not enough to affect the overall positive experience.

Quality of teaching / language progress: It is indeed 'intense' to concentrate 4.5 hrs plus homework but the classes were well-managed. The time was carefully and consistently structured to vary the tempo and demands.
Other comments Very warm, personal environment. Not 'institutional' or business-dominated.

The size and the comfort of the space at my disposal; it is not obvious, because I was in some school - even prestigious - where every day I was wandering in a different classroom, being privileged group classes than individual
Details of the review
Other comments I have not included an assessment of the social activities because I had my program of visits to make, and I was not interested in the school's one; but I saw that they aimed to engage the students, and if I was a little girl, and I'm not anymore, I would be interested in the activities proposed. I have also not included my review of the accommodation, because I was in a hotel chosen by me and where I had a great time.

The teachers are very friendly and competent. The organization is excellent, both the structure, as the lessons. Moreover there is the possibility to take advantage of trips organized by the college itself.
Insider tip: If you choose to do a few weeks you are put into groups already in place, which have already a program in progress, so you can have the impression of losing part of it, if entering a phase not initial . However, the teachers are available to the correction of personal exercises that go beyond the current program.

The teachers and lecturers are knowledgeable and approachable, making it easy for students to seek help and engage.
Disliked
Classes sometimes feel overbooked, and there are too many students for the teachers to adequately care for each individual. As a result, they cannot spend enough time with students who may be struggling to learn.
Insider tip: Reaching fluency in a language is not an overnight process. If you think that simply attending class every day for a year will make your language skills comparable to those of a native speaker, that's unrealistic. It takes time and patience to truly develop proficiency.
Details of the review
Quality of teaching / language progress: My teacher is really knowledgeable, and overall, my experience has been quite positive. The school administration is also very helpful with any problems I encounter.
Other comments After almost eight months of study, I have learned a lot, not only about the German language but also about their culture. Overall, my stay in Dresden has been great!

Good teaching staff. Thank you all.
Insider tip: Before buying additional private lessons, it is better to attend a group course for a few days. 5 hours per day are already a hard job. I did the opposite and it was difficult for me. The course with 4 hours per day is the best option for me takinig into consideration the homework.

Other comments I would like to have an internet connection with a higher speed and an access to the printer at the school. It would also be useful to reduce the group size up to 8 people. There were 12 students in my group and in my opinion it was a bit too much.

Student comments about Apartment Residence
Angela
Accommodation: 3.0
Location: 5.0
Room: 3.0
"Homestay was in an interesting house. Delightful couple. The room looked spectacular but in practical terms it was not so good. No window coverings. Bright light all night. Lights operated by mobile phone which was cumbersome and irritating. The apartment at the school was very good. I was told on the first day a new bed would be installed. This did not happen. Existing couch was very old. However overall I enjoyed the space and privacy. "

Questions and answers about Kästner Kolleg

  • We can organise accommodation in a shared flat or with a host family for up to eight weeks. During this time, the student has the opportunity to look for accommodation locally. After consultation, it would also be possible to extend the accommodation (if this is desired by both parties)
Katrin, from Kästner Kolleg - Jan 14, 2025
  • The biggest difference between a shared flat and a host family is probably that the family connection is somewhat closer due to the breakfast provided. Otherwise, there is not much difference.
Denise, from Kästner Kolleg - Jan 14, 2025
  • Our flat residence is a flat with two separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, shared kitchen and shared living/dining area. A maximum of three Kästner Kolleg students live there at the same time (1 double room and 1 single room).
The guest house, which we also offer, is more of a student residence. However, not only Kästner Kolleg students live there, but also other trainees.
Denise, from Kästner Kolleg - Jan 14, 2025
  • We would accept student, although she is only 15. Her parents would just have to sign our parental consent form, before starting the course.
Katrin, from Kästner Kolleg, Dresden - Jan 19, 2024
  • No, the course fee does not include accommodation. Booking accommodation through the school is up to you, as you can look for accommodation on your own. Within the school's profile on our website there is a section which shows the possible accommodation options that the school can offer you, its characteristics and prices.
    Rubén De Haro, LanguageCourse.Net - Aug 23, 2023
  • If the visa is not granted, we keep 250 euros as a cancellation fee and refund the rest of any fees already paid. The refusal letter from the consulate is required for the repayment.
Katrin, from Kästner Kolleg - Jun 08, 2023
  • To apply for a visa, we issue the following documents:
    Registration confirmation
Confirmation of course (and possibly accommodation)
    Payment confirmation
Excerpt from the register of associations
    ID copy
Katrin, from Kästner Kolleg - Jun 08, 2023
  • Some of the host families and the apartments (residence) require a security deposit for the keys and furniture. When you hand over the keys to move out, you will get the deposit back if everything is in order. The Guesthouse usually does not require a deposit.
