“Small groups, very international. Nice support team that really does its best to connect everyone. (There were also Japanese who study English, who were paired with us, who study the other way). The private lessons are highly recommended by the way. I didn't find the lessons themselves very interesting (see below), The private lessons were intensive, but they were exactly right. They were also flexible: part of the time it was just about what I had done or what was on my mind. In the lessons, practically only Japanese was spoken at full speed. That alone, despite the negative points below, was good. Difficult at the beginning, "natural" at the end.”
“The rooms were relatively small. It was also a bit noisy for private lessons. It seems that I can't keep denying, and will have to get a hearing aid at some point :-( Most likely because of my age (65+), the books used don't really appeal to me. The material is slow, the stories aren't really interesting. The books (Minna no hinongo), are also not really good in terms of layout (messy). This is more criticism of the method than the school. JaLS calls "Shadowing" a strong point. For me it was: everyone talks to the tape or the teacher at the same time. That doesn't work for me. I have to listen to the tape (good pronunciation) and to my own pronunciation, but I can't listen to the tape, 6 students who speak bad Japanese, and myself. Regularly arrived too late for the first hour to miss it. It was just annoying and tiring, and in my opinion didn't contribute to the learning process.”
Insider tip: “Just go for it. Learning a language is like a Japanese proverb: "If you collect dust, it will become a mountain".”

Quality of teaching / language progress: The private lessons add a lot. I actually think you should include this as standard!

“I am so glad that I chose this school! I felt so well looked after and welcome here. Both the teachers and the staff were fully committed to their work every day and I have never had such a great learning environment, learnt so much and had so much fun. The immersive method is used, i.e. everything is in Japanese, but if you really don't understand something, you can of course get by with English. I enjoyed being there every day, as I said I learnt an incredible amount (standard course + private lessons), made great friends and am already planning to come back. I can recommend the school 100 per cent!”

“I was very impressed with everyone at the school. They are a class act. Staff will be checking constantly to see how you are doing and staff visiting from other JaLS schools also walked around just to introduce themselves and to see how you are doing. Student comments about Private apartment
Britta
Accommodation: 3.0
Location: 4.0
Room: 3.0

"There were some things not provided that I would definitely expect in an apartment rented out for short term use. There were no cooking utensils, not even a single pot, nor were there any cups or glasses. I had to go and buy my own shower curtain, which was extremely hard to get rid of afterwards, given the Japanese garbage disposal system. I also was expected to clean the room when moving out. No problem as such, but again, there were no cleaning supplies like a vacuum cleaner or even a broom. On the other hand there were things provided that I would expect in a hotel, like shampoo, conditioner an body soap. That was a little random in my opinion.

Questions and answers about Kyoto JaLS

Does the school also offer Japanese lessons at the weekend?
“No, sorry, we don't have Japanese lessons on weekends. But we have an English and Asian language school, mainly for Japanese students, so we open the school on weekends as well. It's a good opportunity to meet Japanese students :)”
Haruka, Adminstration from Kyoto JaSL - Nov 08, 2024
How to get from accommodation to school by transportation.
“It depends on the location, but students usually use Bus, subway, train or walk.”
Haruka, from JaLS,Kyoto - Oct 22, 2024
I am an absolute beginner. Do I have to learn the Japanese alphabet first?
“It will be easier for you in class if you learn hiragana and katakana in advance.”
Sabine Krafack, LanguageCourse.Net - Jul 17, 2024
My 17 year old son is interested in a language course in the summer. Can he take the beginners course in Kyoto?
“Since he is only 17 years old, we cannot accept him for age reasons. Kyoto JaLS only accepts students aged 18 and over.

However, our Hokkaido JaLS can also accommodate students aged 14 and over! Summer in Hokkaido is truly beautiful and we are sure to enjoy delicious food and stunning nature.”
Haruka, from JaLS GROUP - May 16, 2024
I was wondering if I can live with my friend in apartment who doesn't take classes (if my friend pays extra utilities).
“Whether your friends study here or not, if you stay in the same room together, the price is different from the size of a regular room.

So if you're really planning to stay together, we can check availability and quote.”
Haruka, from JaLS,Kyoto - Apr 29, 2024
Can the school arrange an airport transfer from Osaka for me?
“Yes, the school can arrange a transfer from Osaka airport, but only if the student has booked school accommodation.”
Gosia Mazur, LanguageCourse.Net - Nov 29, 2023
Can I choose the location of my accommodation to be close to the school?
“All accommodation options are located at least 25 minutes by public transport from the school. You can request accommodation as close to the school as possible, but rooms in Kyoto sell out very quickly and the school cannot guarantee a given distance or location of accommodation until 1 week before the course starts. If you want to stay in a particular area, the best option would be to book accommodation on your own.”
Gosia Mazur, LanguageCourse.Net - Nov 29, 2023
Is it possible to cycle to my school from my host family?
“It takes an average of one hour to get from a host family to Kyoto JaLS by bicycle. We do not recommend coming to school by bicycle.”
Yosuke, Administration from JaLS - Nov 21, 2023
Is there a gym near the school?
“There are several gyms less than 10 minutes' walk from the school.”
Yosuke, ad from JaLS - Nov 21, 2023
I would like to book a taxi to my host family, not from the airport, but from the accommodation where I will be staying before going to my host family. Is that possible?
“JaLS can only arrange a pick-up taxi from the airport, but there are certainly other taxis you can book yourself for this trip. ”
Robin Rebecca Pietersma, LanguageCourse.Net - Oct 12, 2023

FAQ about Kyoto JaLS, Kyoto

If I have zero knowledge of Japanese, will I be able to understand the teacher during the lessons at school?
“In zero-level groups, learning is based on visual images. Teachers explain the material using pictures, objects, drawings, gestures, pantomime, etc.”
Maksym Sterpul, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Nov 20, 2023
I am looking to book accommodation with a host family. Is there internet access where I will be staying?
“In the case of a homestay, many homes are equipped with internet access. However, there are also homes that have a good connection from the living room, although not always in the bedroom.”
Maksym Sterpul, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Apr 13, 2023
What are the amenities and furnishings in the place where I will live?
“All accommodation types will provide a bed with bedding and a study table. Everything else depends on the type of accommodation you choose. You can find all the information you need on the accommodation page.”
Maksym Sterpul, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Apr 13, 2023
A few weeks before I start my course, I will receive information about my host family. So I want to get in touch with them before I arrive and discuss some things with them. How quickly do Japanese families respond to emails?
“Sometimes families need some time to respond to a letter, but usually they try to respond as soon as possible. ”
Maksym Sterpul, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Apr 13, 2023
If I book the course, is there a chance to get details of the course management (Director of Studies, Headteacher) who supports the students with practical matters when they are in Kyoto?
“After confirming your booking, we will send the student an enrolment letter with all the details of the school and contact details of the school staff. Also, a student handout will be sent, with all the necessary information before course starts. ”
Maksym Sterpul, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Mar 31, 2023
I'm aware that before I start classes, my Japanese could be improved, and reach a different level than it is now. Would I need to take a test before registering?
“Usually we send the placement test one or two months before the entry after your course application.
