What we dislike about the school
  • Younger students should consider that the average age of students at this school is significantly higher than at most other schools.
  • Do not offer favorable cancellation terms in the case of a student getting a visa rejected.
  • Lessons are 45 minutes long, which is shorter than in other schools.

Location: Les ateliers FL Bordeaux is located in the capital city of the French New-Aquitaine region, Bordeaux. The school is housed within a 19th-century building in the heart of Bordeaux's downtown district, with easy access to cafés, restaurants, shops, supermarkets, and many of the city's attractions. Within walking distance of the Place de la Bourse, Bordeaux Cathedral, the Place de la Comedie, the Public Gardens and the National Opera of Bordeaux, students have much to keep them occupied inside and outside of the classroom. There are both bus and tram stations just minutes from the school's front doors. Bordeaux Airport is within a 45-minute journey of the school via public transport or a 25-minute taxi ride.

School facilities: Les ateliers FL Bordeaux has excellent facilities from a fantastic location in the historical city centre. These facilities include microwave use for students, a computer lab, a lounge area for relaxation, and a private garden. All classrooms are equipped with heating, air conditioning, and ample natural light to create an optimal learning environment.

Course selection: In addition to General French programmes, which are available to students of all levels throughout the year, Les ateliers FL Bordeaux also provides University Pathway and Teacher Training programmes at various times throughout the year. One-to-one and two-to-one courses are available in conjunction with or independently from any other programme.

Special note for 2025 holiday season: If you plan to take a course during the high season months of April, June, July or August 2025 we urgently advise you to book as early as possible. The school does not offer weekend activities and only 1 or 2 activities during the week. But since I signed up for a French + culture, wine and gastronomy course, every afternoon we had an activity that was normally very interesting and very well organized.
Disliked
Weekly classes are two 90-minute shifts separated by a 15-minute break. The first day was completely lost, which doesn't matter much for people who go for several weeks, but I only booked one. The first turn was lost with a small oral test that is not very useful and the second turn with the 1 to 1 presentation of all the students in the class. In the information it says that the maximum number of students per class is 12, but in ours there have been 13 and, one day, 14. The teacher was good, but with so many students, the pace of learning is slower.
Insider tip: There is a great diversity of countries and languages, although in the month of August Spanish predominate.

Quality of teaching / language progress: A recommended course for the afternoon activities that are interesting (visit to St Emilion with Bordeaux wine tasting, tour of the city tasting typical products...) The school provides tickets, information, accompanies the sites agreed with the guides... Our group was 7 people and by doing all the afternoon activities together, a good group relationship was generated.
Other comments It should be better organized so as not to miss the first day of class (20% of class time for those who only attend one week). The maximum group of 12 people should be respected.

The teaching was excellent and the teacher, Marine, could not have worked harder to provide effective, relevant, creative and fun classes every single day.
Disliked
It would have been helpful to have a water tap that was not in the toilet area - very off-putting. A coffee machine would also have been helpful.
Insider tip: If you are staying long-term in the Banlieu do factor in the cost of fares to school.

Quality of teaching / language progress: I thought the course was perfectly adequate, not least due to the dedication and hard work of our teacher Marine. The other staff were always helpful and friendly. It was a very nice place on the whole.
Other comments I was there for 12 weeks and felt comfortable, supported and enjoyed the classes.

Overall a very good choice for learning French. The staff and professors are all very good and the progression was very good in a short time.
Disliked
I prefer courses at school compared to all the online classes. Though the good thing with online classes is that you get input from other professors and students from other locations as well. Even more important to make sure to communicate to the students that they will be needing a laptop or a tablet as several of the others didn’t know in advance. Would like to have even more cultural events.
Insider tip: Bring a laptop or tablet

Quality of teaching / language progress: Attend to BlaBla language exchange every Tuesday and Friday night. Free of charge, and a good way to meet locals
Other comments Online classes require a good reliable internet connection and many accommodations don’t have the connection stable enough

The atmosphere. I didn’t fill in about the housing, as I rented it by myself, in order to know the exact location of my accommodation.
Insider tip: When buying a course for one week, keep in mind that every week you lose 2 hours. This is justified only in the first week, when you are being interviewed. If your course is longer than a week, then you don’t have classes every Monday when new students pass the tests. This is not significant, but not really clear to me:-) They give very little home work, which is unusual for us.

The location is great. There are shopping facilities nearby for the lunch break. The teachers are very nice and committed.
Disliked
The school's equipment is modest. The rooms are in need of renovation, the desks are cheap and unstable. The coffee machine can only be operated with a card, which is annoying. The toilets are moderately clean. The teaching material is only available online, which is a disaster without a tablet or laptop. I only had the mobile phone, which was very exhausting. No papers/copies were provided.
Insider tip: Use museums if the weather is bad, they are nicer than in Germany, absolute recommendation! Go to the parks, read a book, walk along the promenade.
Details of the review
Quality of teaching / language progress: Course basically ok, easier in the mornings, change of group in the afternoons, level a bit high.
Other comments The equipment is rather poor, the rooms are in need of renovation. There was no copy paper at all, everything via teams: be sure to bring your laptop/tablet, with a mobile phone it was a disaster.

Other comments There aren't really any extracurricular activities which would allow students to get to know each other better and to talk a bit outside the school. "The elderly couple lives in a suburb of Bordeaux, practically without infrastructure. The public transport connection is good. Everything is easy to reach by tram. The couple is very nice, but real contact is not wanted. I was not allowed to go into the kitchen or the living room alone. It was more like a room with meals, but no connection to a host family. Dinner was at 8pm sharp, being in the dining room 10 mins earlier not wanted. The room was small, not lockable and no TV. I felt very controlled and locked in, so after 2 nights I changed to a hotel. Unfortunately, this was very expensive due to the Rugby World Cup and the visit of King Charles. I imagine a host family differently, I have also experienced it more positively with others in the past. Of course it depends on what you have in mind, I wish there was more information beforehand, then I could have made a different decision beforehand. For me personally, it didn't fit."

Les Ateliers schools use the MS Teams collaborative platform as a part of the distance learning courses and in support of certain face-to-face courses. Sabine Krafack, LanguageCourse.Net - Jun 11, 2024
How can I reach the school easily by public transport?
To get to the school, you can take:

Sabine Krafack, LanguageCourse.Net - Jun 11, 2024
Which teaching materials are used? Are there books, copies, or are the materials available online?
The educational resources are provided via an online Teams account. In this way, students can communicate with teachers and classmates. A tablet is an advantage, but access is also possible with a smartphone.
Teachers can use the platform to send resources for lessons. Not all teachers use paper materials to reduce waste. This may depend on the teacher's methods, but everyone takes care to provide the necessary knowledge according to the different levels of French.
Meriam, Customer Success Agent from France Langue - Oct 10, 2023
