Overall, I was very enthusiastic about the quality of the school. Everything was very well organised, you were well informed about the procedures in advance. On the first day, there was a nice welcome with a friendly assessment of language skills. All of the teachers I experienced were friendly, personable and absolutely professional. My teacher Constance made the lessons very lively, with good, creative ideas. She was able to turn even dry grammar lessons into motivating units with a lot of humour. I also found the afternoon activities good and interesting. I especially liked the French dinner at Chantale's. Absolutely recommended!
Disliked
I had planned the language course in Lyon to get more into speaking. That came up a little short. Since the school also prepares students for the language exams required to study or work in France, the lessons were very grammar-heavy. I can also do that in Germany at the VHS. Tutorials were offered in the afternoons, but far too few for my taste, and you had to register very early to even get in. In class, there was often group work. Of course, we had to speak French, but there was no teacher to correct mistakes. I also found the tests that were given pointless and a waste of time. In my opinion, the school should differentiate more according to the motivation for taking part in the language courses and then adapt the courses accordingly.

Teaching is to a high level and there is good variation throughout the class day. All teachers are exceptionally talented and linguistic. Lyon is a vibrant city with so much going for it. I would highly encourage anyone looking to learn French to come to this school. Standard is incredibly high and there is a lot of passion and commitment from all staff to push their students to a higher level of language learning.
Disliked
Not much to be fair. Other than be prepared to speak French as speaking English, while tolerated, is not actively encouraged especially within class only French will be permitted and encouraged.
Insider tip: Be sure to be strong in all aspects of French as your grammar, listening & writing will be thoroughly honed in on, while at this school.

Quality of teaching / language progress: Well delivered and timetable worked very well for me.

I really enjoyed learning the language, good and friendly teachers and a very nice Host family (Janine) and the fact, that you made sure, that you will be in a class with students which are as good (or bad) as you are.
Disliked
It was really good that you offered afternoon activities, although there weren't many things I was interested in. I really enjoyed the city tour by Janine, but that was basically it. But I am also quite young compared to the other students, so I would guess that that was a unique problem. All in all, I learned a lot and I enjoyed spending my free time in the park.
Insider tip: The Park

Reasonable price, quality of teaching, comfortable classrooms, kindness of teachers and other staff. Through Google Classroom you can access the summary of everything given in class every day.

You have to take the metro or walk for a long time to go to the city center.
Insider tip: In general, most of the students are very young, 20-25 years old, but in the culture course there were quite a few over 50.
Review details
Quality of teaching / language progress: It is a very good course because it includes 2 cultural activities after classes. Activities such as visits to various parts of the city, wine tasting, cooking class, cruise along the Saona river, etc.
Other comments I've only been there for a week, but due to the quality of the teaching, I think it's worth doing long-term courses.

Lyon is a fantastic city worth exploring every nook and cranny. I had lots of time after my morning classes to take in the sights and enjoy my summer in the city.
Insider tip: If you're staying more than a week, consider getting a Velo'v membership. It's quicker than taking the bus or metro and you'll be able to see more of the city by using the bikes for hire.

Should make it possible to buy coffee with reusable cup. The coffeemashine right now doesn't allow it, which is not sustainable. Facilities either have no fresh air or daylight or if you open the roomdoor a lot of noises, which makes learning harder ... Why is Lyon Bleu listed twice (once as Lyon Bleu and one time with KLF). The result is the same so it's just not correct to have it twice on your website (language course). Also the description is not correct. See the following points: No choice in time of lesson (A1, B1, C2 morning, A2 etc afternoon). No compensation for the missing three classes on first of may. I asked if I could join some of the A1 classes in the morning as a compensation but they just offered to upgrade my booking which would have cost more... Also the afternoon activities were not all free. In the end I was just able to join the only free one. (If that's always the case, the description should be more precise). No snacks available to buy. Printing is very limited (just 10 pages max).

Other comments I found that the instructor talked too fast in my class and it was beyond my ability to comprehend what she was saying. I attended a tutorial for the class that was one level below and found it far too easy and slow. I was very disappointed to find such a large gap between the two levels. The instructor eventually slowed down a little bit during the second week but the classes still lacked a structure and did not really connect with each other. We never received a detailed syllubus and the materials handed out to us each day were some sheets photocopied from some unknown workbook. There were no exercises with solutions given for practice and no textbook for reference. I was disappointed with the organization of the school and the quality of the instruction. The administration was willing to move me to the easier section, but I thought that would have been worse in the end.

Questions and answers about Lyon Bleu International

  • After booking, we will send you a placement test, which you should take as soon as possible. Without the placement test 48 hours before your arrival, we cannot guarantee you a place in a group that matches the level you indicated at the time of booking. On the first day of school at 8:00. there is a short oral test.

  • Host families with breakfast only can be booked for students aged 18 and over. Unfortunately, no exceptions can be made. The advantage is that you get more in touch with the family over dinner and practice your oral French. Also, keep in mind that it is quite expensive if you eat out every evening because the kitchens of the host families are not intended for use by the students.
