Student opinions about Máximo Nivel, Antigua Guatemala

Verified reviews only, uncensored. All student opinions from students who booked a course at the school with LanguageCourse.net.
Liked
Price-performance ratio was super. The quality of the teaching was very high. I also thought it was great that a test was conducted on the very first day to determine the language standard. The administration is very keen and I really enjoyed it. I had super teachers who were very motivated and always very prepared. The group size was great (we were about 6 students). I have to say that my Spanish course helped me a lot and I learned a lot (even though it was sometimes exhausting, but in a positive way). I would do it again (maybe even longer next time?)).
Disliked
The schedule of the private lessons (which I was personally assigned to). My group lessons were from 9am to 1pm, but my private lessons were from 4pm to 6pm (I also had to do homework, so there wasn't much time for relaxation). I was therefore unable to take part in almost any of the afternoon activities offered by the school. The Salsa course (once a week) took place at 6pm, which means that without a break between Spanish and Salsa classes, it's a bit long.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss If possible, extend the course by another week (if you feel like it), otherwise add at least 1-2 weeks for a holiday in Guatemala (since unfortunately you can't see much during the 30 hours of Spanish per week).

I felt very well looked after and well advised from the very beginning, from booking the course to the welcome at the school and host family to the lessons with excellent teachers. It was a great learning environment, I had a contact person at all times and both the school and the family were always keen to make my stay a very special experience. Definitely a school I would recommend to friends and family. Thank you so much!!! I had a wonderful time with very wonderful and helpful people in Guatemala! A great country!

Quality of teaching / language progress: I really liked both teachers and took them to my heart, they were so open-minded and warm, we laughed a lot and had great fun. It was a pleasure to learn with them.
Other comments I personally found the placement test not quite appropriate. Of course, it was only a rough assessment, but I still found the text, for example, which covered a historical topic, too specific. For a comprehension text in a test, I would have liked a more general topic. For me personally, the placement in my course was good the way it was, but in some cases a change from one group to another may have to be made.

I have a very positive experience with Maximo Nivel. The contact is very accessible. They offer very nice activities to speak Spanish in addition to the lessons in a fun way with students from Guatemala and to meet other travelers. The teachers are very nice and help you with all your questions. I learned a lot of Spanish in 2 weeks. Great experience!

Super location, great garden and roof terrace. The staff are very eager and take care of every question, even outside of the school. The quality of the teaching is super. There is no "rushing through", but topics are intensively practised and repeated. With 3 people in my group, it was very instructive.

The distribution into 2 buildings is not ideal, as building 1 is much nicer than building 2 (where my courses were), but this is probably due to the conditions/space available on site. But it's not a major drawback.

I was highly satisfied with my teachers. Professional teaching and manner. As a result, I was very satisfied with the quality of the teaching.
Disliked
For the placement test, I would have liked a neutral text - nothing historical, nothing religious. That way, the text would have been easier for me to understand and the grading would have been different. I was already slightly underchallenged in my group. However, I was immediately given the opportunity to change to a higher course. I stayed because it was good to have a refresher. The pace was too slow for me personally in my group. But as I said, I would have had the opportunity to change immediately.

Quality of teaching / language progress: Due to the law in Hessen for educational leave, I unfortunately could only take the combination of 20 group lessons + 10 private lessons. Otherwise I would have taken 4 private lessons a day.
Other comments Absolutely recommendable! Equally the affiliated travel agency. A bit more expensive than other agencies, but the service here is personal and super, there were no difficulties at all. The two in the combination are really unbeatable.

We had a great two weeks in Antigua. Languagecourse.Net helped us quickly and easily with questions and concerns.
Disliked
We booked a hostel room. We cannot recommend this as you have no control over the options. We ended up in a room without a window right in a pub with loud music until midnight and not much to do. We then changed rooms at our own expense, but were reimbursed by the school for the cost of the hostel in Maximo Nivel credits. There would also have been the option of moving into a host family, but we didn't want to do that.

Questions and answers about Máximo Nivel

  • We could accommodate Katia in a house that has only a few participants, like 1 or 2 other roommates. We can't guarantee they won't speak English to her, but at least she'll be less exposed to English. Antigua is quite a small town so all the houses we have are within walking distance from our school, within 5 to 10 minutes.
Valy, from Maximo Nivel - Oct 26, 2022
  • Unfortunately, it's not possible to have the dog at the school as this may inconvenience the other students (due to allergies, fears, etc). Antigua has many stray dogs and this also may cause issues with your dog.
Valeria Trocel, Team Leader, Agents & Partners from Máximo Nivel - Mar 19, 2023
  • The placement test is taken on the first day of the course at the school. The local team will confirm their levels, and will let them know their class schedule based on availability of groups and teachers at the moment.
    Valeria, Administration from International Programs-MaximoNivel - Apr 12, 2023
  • Yes, the school also offers the option of a single room. Among others, in a host family or in a hostel. Please contact us for further information.
Tanja, Area Manager German from Máximo Nivel, Antigua - May 02, 2023
  • Yes, Hostel, shared room (matrimonial style) is possible on request.
Valeria, Administration from Máximo Nivel - Jul 05, 2023
  • Yes, the school is currently certified for several (German) federal states. Please contact Languagecourse.net to find out which federal states certificates are available and which course is required for booking.
    Tanja, LanguageCourse.Net - Jul 05, 2023
  • All hostels will be within 5 to 15 minutes walking distance for our school.
Valeria , Team Leader from Máximo Nivel, Antigua, Guatemala - Jul 24, 2023
  • We do not offer homestays with breakfast only. They include breakfast and dinner. If she chooses not to partake in the dinners, that is a matter of personal choice, but there would be no cost reduction as the accommodation supplement is a package price that includes both meals.
Valeria Trocel, Team Leader, Agents & Partners from Máximo Nivel - Sep 01, 2023
  • Yes, we can totally book that for you like this!
Valeria Trocel, Team Leader, Agents & Partners from Máximo Nivel - Sep 04, 2023
  • There are several pick-up spots from Lago Atitlán.

A pick-up from Lake Atitlan can cost more than USD 100, as it is approximately 3 hours away. The complimentary airport pick-up costs way less. The difference has to be paid.

If students are booking a tour, I would ask them if their tour operator offers them a transfer back to Guatemala City, and then we can pick them up from there.
Valeria, Administration from Máximo Nivel, Antigua Guatemala - Oct 09, 2023
    • Some stalls sell local sim cards at the airport, so you can buy one there. However, if they are closed, you can also buy SIM cards in Antigua.
Valeria Trocel, Team Leader, Agents & Partners from Máximo Nivel - Nov 06, 2023
    • We recommend you bring some cash on you, and exchange a little bit of it to the local currency at the airport.
Valeria Trocel, Team Leader, Agents & Partners from Máximo Nivel - Nov 06, 2023
    • Yes. Please note: A free airport pick-up is included in the package of all programs whose total fees are USD 300 or more. The program fees include an airport pick-up and it cannot be switched for an airport drop-off.
Valeria, Administration from Máximo Nivel, Antigua Guatemala - Nov 10, 2023
    • We could certainly give your student a placement level assessment to determine her current level if she is interested in brushing up on her skills. The highest level we have would be C1.
Joyce, Person responsible for registrations from Maximo Nivel - Feb 23, 2024
    • If they decide to split into two groups, we would certainly notate their preferences so the local team could find houses close to each other. We do have accommodations large enough to house 5 participants.

If they selected student residence, we have availability. The age of the youngest daughter is ok for us.

Joyce, Person responsible for registrations from Maximo Nivel - Feb 23, 2024

FAQ about Máximo Nivel,

  • The total fee has to be paid for the course and accommodation 2 weeks before arrival. If you are not sure if you will be able to attend 12 weeks for example, you can start by registering for 4 weeks, pay in full before arrival for these 4 weeks, and then extend once you are there.
Valeria , Admissions Officer from Máximo Nivel - Oct 20, 2023
  • Regarding the hotel accommodations, we work with several providers in each country. I can give you some sample names before the enrollment, but we will confirm the exact hotel name at the 4-week mark.
