English Courses
English for Academic Purposes ESL courses are designed for advanced (C2) ESL students who wish to further develop their academic skills and understanding of US culture in preparation for admission to or study in US colleges and universities.
To take English for Academic Purposes (ESL) courses, students must complete ESL060 Advanced Grammar, Reading, Listening and Speaking, and Writing courses or earn a minimum total score of C2 Advanced on the Michigan EPT.
Midwestern Career College’s English Skills for Success course aims to develop the learner’s ability to seek out and work for English-speaking companies and organisations. The course teaches the skills necessary to prepare students to make a career decision, prepare for a future job search, or change careers.
Students will learn how to create career paths that require them to research possible job options and potential employers. Special emphasis is placed on the job interview process.
Midwestern Career College’s ESL Beginner – Advanced courses are for students who wish to learn English in order to fulfil their personal, academic, or professional goals. The intensive, sequenced courses focus on the four English-language skill areas: listening and speaking, reading, writing, and application of grammar. Instructors use a variety of activities— interviews, dialogues, role-plays, language games, and others — to give students opportunities to develop and use their English-language skills.
The ESL program is designed for students whose knowledge of English allows them to score within a range of A1 to C2 on the Michigan English Language Placement Test.
Midwestern Career College’s Professional English courses are for Post-Advanced (C2) ESL students who wish to develop the language and communication skills needed to work effectively with English-speaking clients or in English-speaking workplaces.
Midwestern Career College’s Vocational English as a Second Language program is for students who have the necessary workplace skills and experience but require additional English language skills, including those specific to the workplace.
Students will develop communication-related workplace skills by reading and discussing a wide array of workplace situations. The program helps students gain the vocabulary, fluency, and confidence necessary to work with English speakers and pursue professional goals.
The program is designed for students whose knowledge of English allows them to score within a range of A1 to C2 on the Michigan English Placement Test.
Students applying for Vocational English as a Second Language program must provide proof that they possess basic workplace skills such as higher education credentials, industry-recognised certification(s), or 3rd party work experience verification.
Students will learn grammatical concepts and functional language through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities.
Midwestern Career College’s Integrated Communication Skills in English program explores common constructions in English to help students build practical English language skills. Through integrated listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities, students will apply grammatical concepts and functional language to understand and respond to spoken and written exchanges. This intensive class includes both group and individualised instruction.
Midwestern Career College’s Interpersonal Communication in the United States program is designed to help students develop the face-to-face communication skills that business professionals need to succeed with U.S. clients or in U.S. businesses.
A feature of the class is analysis and discussion of cultural differences in interpersonal communication norms. Topics include interpersonal relationships at work, intercultural communication inside and outside the workplace, the dynamics of small-group communication, the tone of messages (assertive, aggressive, and passive), and a problem-solving process with workplace applications.
Midwestern Career College’s Presentation Skills for English Language Learners program helps students develop the skills and confidence to communicate their ideas in English. Students will learn how to prepare and deliver engaging public speeches in front of an audience. All phases of the public speaking process will be addressed. Students will learn how to choose topics, organise their ideas, and deliver compelling speeches in English.
Midwestern Career College’s English for Healthcare program is designed for non-native medical professionals or aspiring medical professionals who require English language skills specific to the health-care field. The purpose of the course is to help students build vocabulary, listening, and speaking skills essential to success in English-speaking health-care organisations. Students will study key medical terminology and practice using it in speech and writing. Through readings, role-plays, listening activities, and discussion, students will learn how to communicate effectively with patients and coworkers in English-speaking hospitals or clinical settings.
