Course structures: The University of Toronto has a number of courses designed for foreign students to learn English. The International Foundation programme is a pathway to enter the University of Toronto with the correct English language level and the skills required for studying effectively in a University environment. Summer camps are available for juniors and those over 18 years of age to learn English in a multicultural environment at the University as well as a summer pre-university programme.
English Courses
This course offers daily classes led by fully-accredited English language teachers that develop all aspects of students’ English language abilities, including: speaking, listening, writing, reading, and vocabulary.
The aim of the course is to help students improve their confidence, fluency, and grammatical accuracy through a variety of communicative activities, such as collaborative projects, discussions, and presentations.
Classes are assigned based on the results of the written test and a one-to-one interview with a teacher.
This course is designed for students who wish to develop essential skills for success at a university where English is used as the language of instruction.
This course uses content primarily from the social sciences to practice transferable skills that apply to multiple undergraduate programs.
The curriculum focuses on using academic language through critical reading, lecture content, seminar participation, and research skills to become well-prepared for university study in English.
This course is intended for students who want extended practice with expressing themselves in English and engaging with others on a variety of social issues in today’s interconnected world.
Through extensive opportunity to speak with others in a multicultural environment, this course aims to develop your fluency and confidence through a variety of ways to express your ideas to others. Vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation will be practised according to the topics selected, but the main goal of this course is to give you extra tools and practice communicating in English with others on a variety of topics with confidence.
This course is designed for intermediate and advanced students who plan to study at an English language university and who will need to take the IELTS Academic Test.
During the course, students learn strategies and develop the skills necessary to succeed on the test.
Practice tests are used throughout the program.
This course is a full-day offering and cannot be paired with another course.
Please note that this course is highly focused on test preparation and may not be suitable for students who do not intend to take the IELTS test in the near future.

The afternoon Intensive English Course is for students seeking extra classroom instruction and practice communicating in English.
The aim is to promote intercultural communication using topics of general interest to teenagers: students should expect to participate in group projects requiring them to interact and work cooperatively.
The IEC also requires more written work than the General morning course, supported by personalized feedback from the teacher: writing projects in past years have included creative writing, blogs, radio scripts and articles for the IEP newsletter.
TPC is designed for intermediate and advanced students who plan to study at an English language university and want to prepare for the TOEFL iBT during their stay at the University of Toronto.
Throughout the course, students learn test taking strategies and develop the skills necessary for success on the TOEFL iBT.
At the end of the course, students take the TOEFL iBT practice test and receive their practice test scores. This course is a full-day offering and cannot be paired with another course.

English for Global Business is designed for people who wish to become more comfortable using English in their current job or who are interested in a business-related career where English will be used.
This course provides practice with everyday professional activities such as communicating effectively, organising and participating in meetings, giving presentations, and intercultural competence.
The curriculum includes listening and reading tasks, but the primary focus is on communication.
