Location: WAYRA Spanish School Tamarindo Beach is located in the paradise-like beach town of Tamarindo Beach, Costa Rice. Housed in the centre of the town and a short 400m walk from the closest beach. There are various amenities, eateries, links to public transport and sites of interest within walking distance of the school. Such sites include Tamarindo Beach, the Tamarindo Night Market, Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas and more.
Social and cultural: The school offers an activity plan that encompasses the surrounding area, including horseback riding, surfing, snorkelling, canopy and sunset sailing.
Course selection: WAYRA Tamarindo Beach provides General Spanish programmes to students of all levels, over various schedules and intensities. The school also provides Exam Preparation (DELE), Spanish for Specific Purposes, Spanish and surfing and several private tuition packages.
School facilities: The school has its own tropical garden, giving students ample opportunity to relax and socialise outside of class times. There is also a library, lounge area, a movie room, a games room, an outdoor swimming pool, free WiFi and free parking. All classrooms have ample natural light to create an optimal learning environment.
Accommodation: The school can provide accommodation within their own facilities or those of other accommodation providers within walking distance of the school. Homestay in local families is also available.

This course prepares students for the DELE exam.
Start dates are in direct relation to the exam dates so students can complete their preparation and take the exam straight away.
Exams are held for all levels in May and November 2025. The May exam is for level A2 to C2, and the October exam excludes levels A1, C1 and C2.

“The professors were fantastic, and the school generously moved other students and classes around to place me at a different level when the class I was initially placed in didn't seem to be at the right level. I really, really enjoyed Professor Raul, who was my main professor during my course at Wayra. He is smart, interesting, funny, and kind. Learning from him was a highlight of my stay in Costa Rica.”
“I was surprised to be placed in a class with a very junior student who didn't seem to understand basic vocabulary. But, as I mention in my comment about what I liked about the school — my professor was really wonderful and even though the other student didn't participate much, I was able to have very interesting conversations with Prof Raul that really exercised my ability to listen and follow spoken Spanish.”

Other comments The only downside, the school has mainly Swiss and this information was not well reflected on your site. Being Swiss myself I prefer to mix with other nationalities when I travel and I was unpleasantly surprised because it was part of my search criteria to make my choice of destination and schools on your site. Nevertheless the school was really good so I went over.

Other comments I was there for 2 weeks and didn't get to choose whether I wanted afternoons or mornings. They choose that for you. The teacher that I had the first week was really patient, spoke clearly and had clear instructions. However the 2nd week with teacher Alex, I wasn't able to understand him as he spoke quickly and too loud. He was less clear and I was generally anxious in that class. If I choose WAYRA next time, it won't be in Tamarindo.

School holidays:
There are no classes during the Easter Week from 20 Apr to 28 Apr, 2025 (lodging runs normally)
Additionally, the school will be closed from 17 Aug to 14 Sep 2025 (incl. lodging)
and during Christmas week from 21 Dec to 28 Dec, 2025 (lodging runs normally)
When there is only one student for the 20 lessons/week standard course, the course goes ahead with 15 private lessons per week and will shift back to 20 group lessons when more students arrive.
Individual classes
Single individual lessons of tuition can be reserved at 35.70 US$. The combination of group and individual lessons is highly recommended. Individual lessons will encourage you to actively speak the foreign language and will offer you the opportunity to discuss individual problems and weaknesses.

"Casa La Carolina looked a lot better from the outside (nice architecture) than it was on the inside. I haven't been in any youth hostels in about 40 years, but am guessing it's more at that level than we expected to find. I might recommend that if older women (we were 53 and 70 years old) inquire about staying there, it could be mentioned that the offering is very basic and has not been updated in a long time (e.g. only one small pillow per bed, no washcloths provided, the pillowcase had rough pilling on the fabric, the roof leaked when it rained, some bathroom fixtures were secured with electrical tape, bathroom tile was chipped and broken, no drain cover in the bathroom sink, etc)."
