Sicily is the largest Italian island, just off the southern tip of the mainland. The island is renowned for its active volcanoes, ancient architecture and beautiful islands. Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, is found to the North East of Sicily, close to the city of Catania. The other active volcano of the region, Mount Stromboli, is on an island off the northern coast of Sicily. Other notable islands of the province include Panarea, Ortigia and the Aegadian Islands. The capital city of Sicily, Palermo, has attractions such as the Cattedrale di Palermo and Massimo Theater. The Valley of the Temples, an archaeological site, is a prominent landmark of the island.
